One taster called this "one of the best 98er Bellevues" — and the crowd mostly agrees. Expect dark chocolate and mocha meeting cool menthol, with cherry, cardamom, dried plum and roasted nuts over toasty oak. The 58.2% heat is noticeable but sits well after a few minutes in the glass. The finish runs a touch shorter than people wish, but it's a rich, layered sipper.

A super Bellevue 1998! Pleasantly woody with lots of dark chocolate, very creamy, spicy and dark fruity on the palate. the chocolate comes through even more in the (unfortunately only) medium-long finish. I immediately felt like having a crosstasting and a whole bottle of this drink =P Second tasting: +1 point

8,9:On the nose, prunes and cherries, smoky, roasted wood notes, spicy and herbaceous, candied, flowery and mineral sugarcane, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, yellow, citrus fruits and banana, maracuja arise, the cane is caramelized, minty, fresh with tea, as various roasted spicy wood notes complement fruits and cane with cocoa, leather, nuts, coffee and strong cardamom. 9,2:On the palate, the attack is delicious, creamy and round with roasted wood notes, slightly smoky, like roasted nuts, caramel, chocolate, leather, crunchy bread, pairing sweet, candied sugarcane, flowery and minty, dark with black tea and fruits like citrus, cherries, prunes, raisins, dried apricots and pineapple. 9:The finish is round and balanced, dry, with sweet cane, grassy and flowery, fresh with tea, smoky and spicy roasted wood, fruits like tropical, dried and citrus..

Happy to be able to test a rum from this distillery that I know little about. Here, the nose reveals known markers for old rum our jus with wood, prune, vegetal notes. A pleasant eau-de-vie sensation and at the same time a lot of roundness. On the palate, it's woody and spicy at first. Soft and slightly smoky. Strong presence of cherry pit. Alcohol well integrated and still a lot of roundness. A menthol touch at the end of the palate that intensifies during tasting. Nice length. Very pleasant.

Limited to a mere 277 bottles, this is another good one from the Kill Devil release. The nose is like a typical Caroni with the rubber and fruitiness from tropical fruits. There is a bite from the alcohol from the start, which dissipates if you leave it for 15-30 minutes. The palate is nicely balanced where the spices are dominant. Nice curtains on the glass and creamy in the mouth with a bit of saltiness. The finish is long with caramel and salt.

Cross-tasting from the Kill Devil, Milano Festival and TRC anniversary. All three need a lot of time in the glass to develop their aromas. The Kill Devil is more on the dark side. Barrel and wood aromas are clearly present, but not unpleasant. They are not overpowering. All three also have very well integrated alcohol. For me, the Milano is my favorite. The nose is very nice. You find baked apple, so pronounced that you might think you're facing a calvados. It's very fruity and the woody note, like old dusty wood, takes a long time to show up. You detect a hint of exotic fruits, especially papaya. The spices are also well marked: mace, clove, almond, camphor. Searching a bit, you detect some coffee or bitter cocoa. The attack on the palate brings an impressive breath of freshness. It's very mentholated, camphorated, with lots of spices and pastry notes: licorice, vanilla, and burnt caramel. The wood like a ship's hold adds even more complexity, with a slight bitterness at the end of the mouth. The finish is long, without being endless. You find a bit of lemon balm, like a mix of slightly lemony mint and licorice. My score: 91/100

Compared to the other Bellevue 98s in the cross-tasting, the alcohol is noticeable, but not disturbing. It has more depth than the somewhat flatter Royal Cane bottling, for example. The KD is beautifully fruity with notes of redcurrants, some cherry, wood and spices. For me, a very good '98 bottling, only beaten by the KD version matured for 20 years.

So far I haven't really warmed up to Agricole, so it was time for a little crosstasting. 1st RX7238 (Neisson Full Proof): Overall more on the fresh/fruity side. Alcohol very well integrated -> 8.5/10. 2nd RX10968 (St. James V&B): Here I particularly like the nose with the subtle glue note, tropical and dried fruits. On the palate then clearly spicier/roastier and slightly bitter -> 8.6/10. 3rd (RX1146) La Mauny: Quite sweet on the nose, with lots of caramel, dried nuts and vanilla. Nuts and vanilla. A floral note initially on the palate, then spices and wood dominate -> 8.5/10. 4. RX2216 (Kill Devil Bellevue 1998): Mint, chocolate and some smoke on the nose. On the palate also chocolate and mint, plus wood, caramel, some tropical fruit and leather. Fruits and leather. I liked the taste best. -> 8,7/10. 5th RX6221 (Karukera Velier 70th): For me the most "agricole" on the nose. In contrast to the other representatives in the tasting, I can tell directly from the nose that this is an agricole. I can detect typical fresh, grassy notes, sugar cane and unfortunately also a slightly musty note. I also find it quite floral/flowery/grassy on the palate. -> 7,9/10

Extremely cool 98 Guadeloupe. Intense cardamom and cherry notes, some dark chocolate, mocha and a little mint as well as orange peel and roasted nuts. For me, this is by far one of the best '98 Bellevues to date.

This one comes right over spicy woody in the nose. Dry vanilla powder, toasty and even smoky. But also fruity with the sweetness of dried plum and the acidity of currant, some cherry is also there. Fresh mint and some chocolate out the back.Also on the palate this delicious spiciness and woodiness that immediately transitions into grassy sweet sugar cane. I got a slight chocolate note here as well. And immediately again the mint. In fruit I find dried apricot. Vanilla and anise are also present.In the finish sugar cane, anise and mintVery successful and delicious.

Another very good representative of the 98 Bellevue series. Here too, the characteristic profile with herbs, a pleasant spiciness and some sweetness. The rum is very well balanced, the alcohol is perfectly integrated and the finish is loooong. That's how it should be!

Again a strong bottling with a pronounced character. Warm baking spices meet a cool menthol note, giving the profile tension and depth. Harmonious, multi-layered and very successful – really enjoyable.

A very round balanced Bellevue 1998. Lots of barrel influence with great roasted flavors. Seems concentrated. Alcohol very well integrated. For me a very tasty rum, which can be explored but also not too demanding. I like it very much.

Really interesting sample! It balances well fresh minty notes with red fruits (cherries) and sweeter touch (cocoa, caramel). Really worth it if you can grab a bottle at decent price ;)
