Rest & Be Thankful Hampden for Wu Dram Clan & Kirsch Whisky LROK 2016

Overripe banana, pineapple and a marzipan streak, wrapped in roasted wood, vanilla and spice — this is Hampden's quieter LROK side, not the ester bomb. At 65% it runs hot and a touch sharp, with an acidic, astringent edge several tasters flag. A few drops of water and some time in the glass calm it down. Most enjoy it; the funk hunters wanted more.

8,3:On the nose, bourbon notes and mild esters, some solvents are the first thing we notice, green fruits like pear, floral and grassy notes, vanilla, all balanced. On aeration, unripe banana is out, citrus, herbaceous and vegetal tones with an olive, roasted wood with pastry, nuts, spicy. 7,9:On the palate, the attack is sweet/salty, very spicy, some chilli is there, woody tones, all a bit wild. The balancing act are tropical fruits like banana, esters and roasted wood notes like caramel and nuts. After resting the rum, very tasty fruits are stronger with mango, green fruits and some apricots, milk chocolate. 8,2:The finish is round with dry and spicy, salty wood, roasted with crunchy bread, caramel, a bit smoky, some hay and especially apricots..

To be honest, this rum doesn't really blow me away. I notice a certain mustiness on the nose, which I find disturbing. I find the taste relatively sharp, as the alcohol is not really well integrated. How WDC and Kirsch were able to choose this remains a mystery to me.

Here I can go along with Serge, who rated the youngster very highly. He was also one of my favorites in the lineup and shows very well that young low ester Hampden can also work very well.

Not a bad rum, but relatively sour for a Hampden, astringent, marzipan. I clearly miss the fruity notes.
