Swell de Spirits T.D.L (RumX) 2001
Poured neat and given ten minutes to open, this 2001 T.D.L is all blackcurrant, mint and cool menthol wrapped in old oak. Tasters keep landing on black tea, red fruit and a long, tannic, faintly bitter finish. Several call it a "top-notch" TDL; even people who say TDL isn't their profile admit this one won them over. The cask strength is well tucked in.

How does Swell de Spirits T.D.L (RumX) 2001 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Intense minty, cassis-and-oak Trinidad sipper Loved almost across the board as a benchmark 2001 TDL: intense cassis, mint and oak with a huge finish. The catch is the bitter, woody, menthol-heavy side that TDL skeptics may find sharp.

A real TDL bombshell. From nose to finish, mint, wood, and blackcurrants dominate. The nose is already heavy with added cherry and leather. On the palate, in addition to mint, there's menthol, which makes the whole thing feel fresh; alongside that, tea and peach. I'm really glad to still have a bottle of this rum.

Swell & RumX, these are excellent conditions. Once again a great 2001 T.D.L. Very (dark) fruity and woody, which I really like the balance here. Mint also pokes through again and again, sometimes less, sometimes more bitter and gets its wide stage especially in the finish. Anyone who likes a strong minty note will probably score a few points higher here.

👃 a pungent mix of fruits (mango, apricot, blackcurrant) bathed in alcohol on a background of caramel, cinnamon, varnish with a little smoke. 👄 it's fat, fleshy, enveloping with woodiness, a little honey and menthol, esters, pepper coming through especially on the long finish. I understand that some people really like this kind of esterified rum with very present alcohol, but it's not to my taste.

Edit: a teabag side note in the store, a hint of spice, and a nice tangy sweet finish! First impression: A great time behind the Swell counter at Rhum Fest Paris. An ultra-fruity profile, lots of blackcurrant I think, a fair amount of mint, and a discreet boise at the start that sintensifies on the finish. An almost infinite finish. Superb!

High-caliber. Rather from the deeper, more bitter, stronger TDL valley. Congratulations on the excellent choice of cask for a rum of which I just managed to get hold of the bottle with the last handwritten number. I can give this rum 90 points without hesitation.

First thought at the first nose: Mauritius, New Grove Distillery, nice intense nose, I already like it very much. Palate: hmm, could also be St. Lucia Chairmans Reserve or T.D.L (mint!) Very intense, too intense for New Grove, too minty for St. Lucia so T.D.L. Alcohol approx. 55% Finish: super long with sour cherries, mint and wood/barrel Excellent rum, I particularly like the intense aromas with red fruits. The barrel influence is just in the green range, the finish is already bitter. Alcohol very well integrated. Resolution: YES! T.D.L is correct Alcohol is also almost right this time.

Oh man, what a cool piece. You can hardly deny that it's a great rum. It certainly has an excellent, great T.D.L nose. Lots and lots of mint, really very, very tasty. An absolute top rum.

Thanks @Rob for opening this bottle at RhumFest. Not the best conditions to test it, but we've got the framework of these TDL 2001s with omnipresent blackcurrant and menthol wrapped in an old wood full of elegance and a slight bitterness. It should be given more time, but for a quick tasting, it was very good. I particularly appreciated the fact that it was a few degrees lower than its congeners.

Tasted at Rhum Fest Paris 2025, I managed to get a bottle on release day. Today, the bottle is killed 🔪🔪🔪 👃 Intense, explosive fruits between tropical fruits such as passion fruit, ripe papaya, starfruit and berries (blackcurrant of course, maybe redcurrant too). The green mint is well present, wood quite discreet. Note: with time and oxidation, I find this pleasant herbal hemp smell and a bit of hydrocarbon. 😋 You find this complex explosion of fruits, it's tangy, the freshness of Hollywood chewing gum, a bit of camphor, lots of menthol, white mint candy. The wood is more present but very well blended, notes of roasting (coffee) and light empyreumatic (essence, hot tar). ⛳ Very long, intense, aromatic, expressive finish, carried by peppermint, berries, a slight medicinal bitterness. 💡 Alcohol very well integrated, the wood is elegant, with a fruity framework like TDL 2003 from The Whisky Jury. Strangely not too woody compared to Rum Artesanal 67° with 3 more years on the clock. One theory is that it spent some time in a demijohn to soften it? In terms of intensity, what is lost in kick and punch of alcohol on a Rasta Morris or a Nobilis is balanced by more "softness" on the Swell. 🏆 Current TDL 2001 ranking: RM > Caksus > Flag > Swell > RA1 > Antipodes > RA2 > TCRL > Cadenhead

Great strong TDL. In the nose mint, menthol, herbs, black tea, currants, a bit malty, hoppy. Alcohol excellently integrated. On the palate Fresh and mentholated... mint, currants, distinct wood and bitter substances. Generally less fruity. Alcohol also almost perfectly integrated here. Finish lots of bitterness and mint.
Review by DomM
Rich and intense on the nose. Driven by fruits (peach/apricot) balancing against dark wood and leathery notes, paying tribute to the long time in the cask. Notes of sweetned black tea and (only) a hint of mint. The palate starts of with the same fruity cocktail and some sweetness. The sweetness nicely balances versus ample notes of wood and leather providing a very mature TDL profile. Bitterness is moderate overall, yet you need to appreciate the more woody side of things to fully enjoy this bottling. Cheers to Mika for providing this exceptional cask for a RumX co-bottling. Was a pleasure to select. :)

In extremely fruity and delicious nose with herbs, flowers and a light menthol. Spices, peach and cherry, light oak, all combine to make this a complex nose. The palate is complex and powerful from the outset, and the aromas continue to build. The fruit is there, as are the spices. The wood comes through on the finish, with bitter tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is rather long, with woody, bitter tannins at the very end. Wow! What a great rum!

9,3:On the nose, roasted wood, smoky with leather, nuts, caramel, intense, spicy with nutmeg, various fruits like passion fruit, red fruits, blackcurrant, blackberry and cherries, minty, herbaceous molasses, slightly sweet, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the intensity calms down and we get a top round and balanced rum, the molasses becomes flowery, fresh with tea, sweet with brown sugar, raspberry, strawberry and citrus fruits join, chocolate and hints of tannins. 8,9:On the palate, the attack is intense, bitter, salty, slightly tannic, medicinal with menthol, imbalanced, quickly the storm calms down, with cherry wood, roasted, smoky, the barrel impact is obvious, the fruits like blackcurrant, dried currants, peaches, grapes and later grapefruit, help rounding the rum, as molasses, fresh with tea, minty, herbaceous, grassy, buttery vanilla and butterscotch. When the rum is well rested, it becomes slightly dirty and rubber joins. 8.9:The finish is long, dry&tannic, as the balanced notes from palate linger on for a long time.

Už čiśla předesílali něco jedinečného. A realita to ještě velmi předčila. Intenzivní komplexní vůně plná ovoce, dřeva, koření a máty s náznakem techniky. Chuť olejovitá, s nástupem techniky, máty a čaje, ustupuje dřevu a ovoci. Máta zůstává. A ten závěr.. wow!

Incredible TDL, which confirms all the good things said about the 2001s! A magnificent nose of tangy fruit! And an explosion of flavor on the palate! Mentholated chlorophyll! And always that crazy fruit!

Tasted together in the small circle of the Franconian Tasting Gang. In my opinion quite nice, it stands out a bit from the uniform mush currently hitting the market, but unfortunately not a unicorn for me.
Review by Leo Krüper
Trade fair rating Super TDL. Luckily not too minty and bland.
Review by Serge
Bold, dark and fruity nose with red and tropical fruits in a tropical aged wood bed with mint and spice. On the palate, redcurrant is clearly in the foreground of the fruit ... with mint and wood. But there are also a few other fruits that resonate. I don't like TDL, but this is really tasty. Good mouthfeel and cleanly integrated alcohol. Very good representative of my non-favorite profile.
Review by Chrischi78
Powerful, characterful TDL with intense fruit of peach, currant, and tropical notes. Mint, menthol, and spices bring freshness, accompanied by distinctive wood. Cleanly integrated, complex and convincing. Thanks to SaibotZar for this great sample.
Review by Johannes
A real plank! Compared to other TDLs, the mint is not so superficial and direct, but is excellently integrated into a complex depth with a good portion of tannins and wood. This is another TDL that is more on the bitter side.

Fantastic TDL!

Many thanks to Banana Joe for this great bottle share. Wonderful RumX bottling. Since I have tried few T.D.L so far, I can hardly classify it. It has a very long and spicy finish as well as excellent quality.

Also got the chance to taste at the 3rd GAF. Very interesting and varied. I always have a bit of a problem with Trinidad. They are too sharp-edged for my taste. That's why I unfortunately have to deduct points here.
Review by Alex1981
Great bottling for RumX! Although a bit expensive, the quality is right. Lots of fruit and wood, nicely intense in great balance. A little bitter in the finish, with tea and wood, but otherwise everything is fine :)
Review by Felix Reiber
A very tasty TDL with strong fruit and fresh spice. Very delicious! On the nose, intense fruit notes spread. Black currants, cherry, passion fruit and raspberries are accompanied by a nice woodiness. Leather, nutmeg, mint and herbs bring a great spiciness. On the palate again many fruits including black currant and pear. Then quickly mint, herbs, cask notes, fresh menthol and wood. An interesting root note leads over to cherry wood, tea and coffee. The long and aromatic finish offers similar notes as the palate and additionally citrus fruits, pepper and clove. The tannins are present and linger long. I really like this rum from Trinidad and it is certainly a highlight also for Armagnac fans. Many thanks to @Oliver for the sample 😀

First off: I will never become a fan of TDLs. I only ordered the bottle to split it and then of course tried it myself. The smell already hints at the classic TDL traits, minty with some spice and dark fruits like cherry, on the tongue then the coolness of mint with cask aromas, slight sharpness and fruity hints. The finish is long and mentholated, exactly what unfortunately doesn't excite me about TDL - but overall very tasty, very complex and excellently crafted! So I just follow the community's vote in the rating so as not to drag it down.

A first-class TDL... the nose and palate immediately meet the expectations of aromas you wish for. The interplay of fresh menthol, as opposed to the spicy, bitter and woody aromas, is almost perfect.. In the finish, the menthol note asserts itself with increasing duration. Top cask selection.

In der Nase super fruchtig, erinnert mich an Hubba Bubba Kaugummi. Im Mund dann leider eher flach neben Frucht, Kräuter vor allem Minze. Abgang mittellang einfach Mojito ;)

I really like the nose. Very intense and fruit-forward. Compared directly with Rasta Morris, the Rumx bottling comes across fruitier and the RM adds a good dose of glue and lacquer. On the palate really intense with mint, spices, lots of fruit, slightly medicinal. Really good bottling, even though I like some of the 2003 releases more.

At last I can also enjoy 22222. Bloody great stuff. Wood, mint and red berries and fruit (many write redcurrant.....). The nose is already great - the taste is really on top, with the same aromas only much more intense. Nice and oily too. Could be my new TDL benchmark.

2001 T.D.L from Swell de Spirits. Lots of mint and menthol. Along with strong, slightly bitter cask influence. With some time in the glass, the fruity notes also come through. Then it gets really good. Alcohol is very well integrated.
Review by Jarek
The nose is fruity at first, with currants, maybe some cherry. Menthol clearly present from the start. After a while, spicy and dry notes take over, with black tea, wood. Even slightly dirty notes linger. These notes remain dominant on the palate. In the finish, lots of menthol, wood, spices and light berry notes in the background. Like it.
Review by Master P
Intense, explosive fruit between tropical fruits such as passion fruit, ripe papaya, star fruit and berries, blackcurrant. Green mint clearly present, quite discreet woody notes. Unfortunately only had 2cl to try, very tasty.
Review by Nils123
What a beast! A T.D.L par excellence! It's so intense it seems to jump right out of the glass. In the mouth it even goes further: full blast of blackcurrants, mint and menthol, concentrated and intense!

RX2222 tasted against RX13862 and RX15322. The RX22222 has a wonderful nose with yellow fruits, baking spices, and falernum. On the palate, it starts still very fruity, then more and more tannins and menthol come through. Everything very round, harmonious and elegant. The finish is quite bitter with tannins and spices. Really a great bottling! Compared to that, the Nobilis is less fruity on the nose and a bit more closed. Also less fruit on the palate, more on the woody side, with lots of spices and tannins. The finish has a slight cardboard note alongside the spices. Also a really great 2001! The Rasta Morris is the most medicinal 2001 on the nose with the most menthol. Less fruit than the Swell. On the palate, the bitterest of the three, but that doesn't bother because the bitterness is embedded in a nice fruitiness with falernum spices. Nice finish with menthol, where I find cardboard in the Nobilis, I find noble wood here. The Rasta Morris remains simply an absolute beast. Swell and Rasta Morris are on par for me today, with the Swell a bit fruitier than the Rasta Morris, which has more noble wood. But the Nobilis is also a great bottling, although for me it doesn't quite reach the other two.

I was really looking forward to this T.D.L because it is surrounded by nothing but superlatives. In short, I can only confirm them. Dark color immediately lets you know that a lot has been extracted. The nose is dominated by mint, woodiness and blackcurrant. On the palate, roughness of long-extracted black tea is added. On the other hand, I do not feel any minerality, which sometimes bothers me with T.D.L.
Review by DutchRumPirate
A fantastic 2001 T.D.L. The nose is delightfully fruity, fresh, and woody with a good sharpness. The taste matches the nose. The minty sharpness is clearly present, but thankfully, not too prominent for me. The finish is distinctly fruity and pleasantly long. A top-notch rum!

Really an impression of a mix between a tdl 2001 and 2003. As much red fruits as slightly bitter mint. A caramel side and a beautiful woodiness. Superb length. Top!

Very good TDL 2001, but I'm a bit disappointed that it lacks the dirty side I found in Rasta Morris or Rum Artesanal!

Swell TDL 2001 – RumX Nose: Aromatic explosion right from the opening. The menthol notes immediately stand out, fresh and vibrant, supported by noble woodiness and hints of ripe red fruits. The whole breathes complexity and depth, with a subtle resinous and spicy touch in the background. Palate: The alcohol, perfectly controlled, supports a rich framework where toasted oak blends into nuances of candied red fruits, menthol, and blond tobacco. The texture is ample, the progression harmonious, between freshness and controlled power. Finish: Long, persistent, and nuanced. It slowly unfolds its aromatic layers — precious wood, menthol, stewed fruits, and a balsamic hint — leaving a deep and elegant imprint. Conclusion: A TDL of great class. Raw and sincere, it combines intensity, freshness, and balance with rare expressiveness. A characterful rum, both refined and enveloping.
Review by Stijn Zino
Nose: dark red fruit, wood and minth. Palate: heavy on the minth/menthol this one. Finish: long herbal and even a stronger minth impression. Great (minthy) rum!
Review by Richard Krupa
The aroma and taste have mint, tannins, and an omnipresent sweetness.
Review by Michal Jurka
Very fresh, very fruity, very green nose... mint, citruses, yellow fruits, peach green ice tea, light vanilla, hints of green apple, kiwi, gooseberry, younger wood... but when I give it a good rest it becomes richer in red fruits. The taste is still very fresh and so much stronger in mint even menthol, wood and even herbals, the fruit from the nose is quite gone, but spices appear and bittery medicinal notes. The taste is quite sharp and stingy, but not alcoholic. And the mint lingers and lingers... I would guess 2003 but upon learning that it is 2001 I am bit dissapointed in the missing "dirty, rubbery" notes..... no, no, just kidding. This is some seriously good TDL.
