Orange peel, caramel and young wood, with a little chocolate and tobacco underneath — that's the shape of this 1980s Don Q Gold. Most tasters found it mild but thin and watery, with the alcohol reading rough even at 40%. Several noted it's a step up from the older 1970s bottlings, but no one calls it exciting. A historical curiosity more than a great pour.

5,8:On the nose, we first notice a leather, a wood is spicy, there is a vanilla, from fruits, orange peel and an apple are present. 6,2:On the palate, the attack is quite pleasant with roasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, smoky and spicy as a molasses brings some tobacco.The fruits are dried, orange peel and apple repeated from the nose. 5,6:The finish is medium long, thin with same fruits, wood spices, caramel and a bit metallic..

Tasting Puerto Rican rums from Artur. Apple and mirabelle on the nose, light wood. On the palate, also a big improvement compared to its little brother from 1976 with the appearance of citrus notes (orange zest), more pronounced fruits and much better integrated alcohol. The finish integrates fruits and a woody bitterness.

06.12.2024 The liquid History of Puerto Rico Tasting First of all, many thanks to Artur for the extreme effort and for sharing such old rums at all. The rums themselves were not really spectacular except for a few exceptions, BUT I still really liked it because normal mortals don't get to taste such rums anymore and all the background knowledge Artur shared is insanely interesting. I really tip my hat to that. Big respect!

Puerto Rico Set Nr. 9: Some citrus-y notes on the nose. Wood, vanilla but overall not very potent and not really very expressive. Similar sensation on the palate. Pretty thin. Besides some caramel and woody notes there isn’t much going on. Cheers to Artur for curating this set!

23.02.25 The liquid History of Puerto Rico Tasting Thanks to Artur for the great opportunity and effort. Nose definitely vanilla but also caramel and milk chocolate. On the mouth rather thin but mild. Honey and some spice noticeable.

Crazy development here compared to the predecessor from 1974. Orange peel, slightly smoky, vanilla, and overall much darker in aroma. I like it a tiny bit better and overall, in my opinion, it's more exciting!

Artur's Puerto Rico tasting, thanks for the great overview and history :-) A series of DonQs evolving over decades, starting from the 50s compared to the current release. Surprisingly, the newest is also the best, clearly fruitier and more intense at a good price. Exciting!

Historical evening with original period rum samples from the 60s and 70s of Pavel Špaček on 17.2.2025. The crate of samples arrived from a collector in France and can only surprise us. There are five of us for this, so we shall see.

A really straightforward but boring rum, that really shines in technical flawlessnes, the rest standard and expected. Daiquiri: weridly no nose at all. Buta palate full of fruity orange that you bite with the peel. 4/5 Stars.
