Bedford Park Caroni Single Barrel Trinidad Rum 1998
Several tasters call this one of the more drinkable Caronis around — one even called it a "breath of fresh air" next to all the over-oaked old stock out there. Expect tar, rubber, petrol and leather sitting over butterscotch and dark fruit. It's continentally aged, so a touch lighter than a tropical Velier, but give it 20-30 minutes to open and the dirty diesel character shows up properly.
- Classic Caroni funk
- Great integration
- Long finish

Dirty, tarry Caroni that stays drinkable Loved by people deep into Caroni — dirty tar, rubber and petrol over sweet notes, with great integration. The honest catch: lighter and less complex than tropical-aged bottlings.

And then there was that Caroni from Fuwi. Wow, it really leaves you speechless. A seriously intense one. Very dirty, lots of tar, leather, and rubber. Also slightly roasted and woody as well as smoky.

This Caroni definitely needs time in the glass. At first, it’s quite restrained and the aromas appear only subtly. Gradually, they become much more pronounced and classic for a Caroni: dirty, tarry, dark berries. On the palate, it’s noticeably stronger. Overall, it stays more on the dirty side there as well. Same in the finish... considering the price, a clear recommendation for lovers of dirty Caronis.

22-05-2025 Fantastic Caroni. Great integration between rum, taste and ABV. The one to beat tonight 16-10-2025 - Rate 9.3 27-02-2026 - Rate 9.3 Aften a Bedford rum that did not quit live up to the expectations we took a safe card and finished the night with a Caroni.

First of all: The rating was also influenced by the low price compared to what you get. For €320 including import, you get a continental-aged but incredibly powerful Caroni from a small bottler. It needs its time; I've tried it three times now – it needs at least half an hour to oxidize to really open up its nose and develop the necessary punch. But then you're rewarded with typical Caroni aromas: dirty tar, rubber – everything that's fun! Underneath, sweet notes of butterscotch, dark fruits, and solvents mingle. On the palate, it hits hard, starting with a slightly cool, almost menthol note, followed by meaty spice and burnt sugar with extremely awesome, strong hints. It lingers on the palate longer than average, so you definitely get a long-lasting pleasure in the glass! By the next day, the glass left standing smells like butter biscuit with milk chocolate – fantastic!

Decent level Caroni, very strong flavours. Doesn't hide the Caroni profile. Misses some complexity, but sometimes you don't need it to have a very good rum. Geen light Caroni.

This particular Caroni is lovely and definitely seems to play to my particular tastes as a person that does not buy a huge amount of colder climate matured Caroni, I prefer the bigger and bolder tropically matured bottlings. It leads with some kola nut before some Caroni shapeshifting between petrol, tar, oily wrag, wood, a little spice, light fruit and messy sweet notes begins. Great integration too. It all feels solid with nothing being too dominant or off kilter....alcohol, wood and distillate all getting along nicely. I really enjoyed it and I can't say that about a lot of cold climate Caroni

Nose: Wood, smoke, petrol, orange peel. Maybe also reminiscent of a good Demerara from smell. Maybe some stone fruit. Palate: disntincltly caroni after opening up for 20 minutes. Classic dirty industrial notes but not huge. Some pepper, spice and wood. Not as big and punchy as a Velier tropical aged, but having more of the characteristics of heavy Caroni than most continentals that I have had.

Easy drinking Caroni. Revisiting my second bottle. Some dirtiness, some petrol, some sea water, fruit flavours underpin. Outstanding work and really enjoyed - a lot of Caroni out there is very woody and undrinkable now so this was a breath of fresh air.

While this isn’t the dirtiest / petroliest Caroni I’ve had, it manages to walk the line between grunge and pop. Good flavours and a tasty finish mean that the underlying “diesel” adds a layer rather than dominated. I’ve tried so many Caronis in my time and they are hit or miss - this one is delightful!

"It reminds me very much of the Bristol Spirits Caroni 1997 which I reviewed some time ago now. From memory that one slightly shades it over this but this is still highly recommended if you want Heavy Caroni rum. An excellent albeit expensive bottling but then again most Caroni of..."Read full review →
