Brought this to work for my new thing “rum fridays”. For many it was their first time sipping proper rum, and they loved it. This is just a really delicious, simple, barrel-led rum. Reminds me of how I first tasted Foursquare 12yo I guess, many years ago. But at 50% this has nice carachter and weight and the spirit feels somewhat heavier than foursquare.

To simplify it, the rum comes across as a hybrid of Navy Yard and a high abv Old Brigand, which is itself one of my favourite Rums. Barrel led and drinks very well. But given some time with a little head space, it begins to offer much more. Nose: Leads with big wafts of vanilla pod. Fresh wood and pencil shavings. A walk around a library complete with wood polish and dusty books. Something a little musty leading to some pumice stone. Beautiful orange molasses marmalade. Flamed orange oils. Terry's Chocolate orange. Cocoa powder. Kola nut. Fry's Mint Chocolate. Palate: The wood instantly hits and brings the vanilla in the form of a custardy vanilla slice. Creme Catalan. These beautiful egg based sweets that my Portuguese colleague used to bring in. The faintest hint of coconut cream. Then that citrus really comes to the fore on the mid palate. Marmalade, thick cut obviously. Spiced homemade fruitcake. Molasses. The coating from sugared almonds. Never cloying though. Always well poised and subtle. There's a red berry sharpness that cuts in off the back end and into the finish and this channels into a floral quality in the retro olfactory before that initial vanilla and pencil shaving quality blends out to a beautifully lengthy finish.
