One taster called it "quite fruity and unlikely sweet for a Chairman," and that captures it: ripe banana, raisin, pear and lemon up front, then a spicy, woody, tobacco-tinged palate with red berries and a hint of chocolate. The wild ex-brandy and wine cask mix could have overwhelmed the St. Lucia character, but several members found it held together. A few needed a couple of pours to warm to it.

Tasted this rum at my recent visit at the Saint Lucia Distillers (SLD) and took a bottle with me back home. This is the third release in SLD’s vintage project series after the 2005 and 2009 vintage. For this they explored an unique combination of ex-brandy, ex-red and ex-white wine casks, alongside their traditionally used ex-bourbon casks. It’s made from entirely molasses distilled in 2011 using their three pot stills and Coffey column still. The destillates were aged independently for a minimum of 11 years before being blended together and finished in ex-bourbon casks for an additional 10 months. The nose is fruity and ripe with scents of raisin, banana, pear, lemon and toffee. At the palate it’s full bodied, balanced, sweet, fruity and woody with flavors of strawberry and oak. The finish is rather long with flavors of ripe apple and coconut.

So, the Norwegian "Schnapp" is open. And a rather pleasant fellow that makes a good evening companion. While the nose still reveals fruity notes of coconut, banana and raisin, the taste and finish are characterized by sweetness sweetness, spice and light woodiness come to the fore in the taste and finish. Due to the low ABV, it is all quite harmonious and drinkable.

A rum tasted at the GRF in 2025 at the Chairman’s Reserve tasting. A broad nose with ripe fruits (pineapple), yellow fruits, vegetal and citrus notes. The palate starts with pepper, spiciness, then the overripe fruits come through. The finish is medium-long and the spicy and fruity notes linger longer.

Tasting at Rhum Fest 2025. 👃 Lots of stewed fruits; banana, pear, apple cinnamon, raisins, lemon, light berries. Notes of butter caramel, soft vanilla, toffee. Aging brings a beautiful spicy and toasted wood. Some earthy, dry notes, slight menthol, tobacco. 😋 A dominant mix of wood influence and light fruits. Fresh coconut, apple, berries and red fruits. The wood brings spices (cinnamon, mild chili), milk chocolate, coffee with a touch of milk, a bit of leather and tobacco. ⛳ Rather long, fruity (apple and coconut), soft vanilla, a bit of raisin and chocolate. The wood is a bit bitter on green tea and tobacco leaf. 💡 For 50-60🍒 it's a very good value for money. In my top 10 molasses in its category.

Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr Düsseldorf April 2026. Then it continues with a Chairman's. Nice piece this Vintage Edition from 2011. It's mostly spicy and woody (oak), but also still slightly roasted.

Tasting note: clearly better than the Vintage 2009. Much more fruit, less cane. Pleasant sweetness. Brings the classic SLD aroma. Alcohol well integrated, barely noticeable in the drink anymore.

Because of the somewhat wild barrel combination, I was initially skeptical whether the rum really survived this unscathed and was not overwhelmed by the wine notes. But the concern was unfounded; this is really a tasty sipper where the St. Lucia basic character has clearly remained and has been expanded by red berry fruits. Only the dilution somewhat limits this beautiful vintage bottling in its possibilities.

#5611 31.08.2025 Chairman's Reserve tasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. Another very nice vintage release. Nicely balanced with spices and light smoke. There is a light minty note in the profile as well as some teea and dried fruit complimented byt some light chocolate and caramel. Price to quality is pretty good in my mind.

This Chairman brings a new facet to the vintage series! The 2005 was very smooth with chocolate and caramel, the 2009 more smoky, and the 2011 is extremely fruity (ester)! Otherwise a bit floral, a bit woody, and subtle spice. Surprisingly and completely unexpectedly, it’s now intense on the palate with wood, leather, spice, and roasted notes. Wow! What a crazy curve this rum takes. Looking forward to more tastings because I have the feeling there’s even more to discover.

Rum tasting at Oops D. 20.06.2026. Together with F. Kraemmer. Theme St. Lucia. Nose on an adventure👃: I sense the brandy cask coming into character and dominating positively. The sharp citrus scent sneaks in behind. Tongue on an adventure 🥃: I taste small notes of white wine, mint lies fresh on the palate from the first sip. Besides that, I generally sense freshness and fruit. The tail of the story💫: An excellent blend! 👌

Trade fair tasting Chairman's Reserve Tasting GRF 2026. Hence a short review. This is a blend of rums from all available distilleries (column and pot stills). The nose impression has more complexity than the forgotten cask blend. Freshness, spice, fruitiness. A bit of mint and something that reminds me of a hospital (probably some component that you also find in some disinfectants on the nose) but not unpleasant. Also on the palate these diverse aromas together with mint. Maybe a bit light. The finish is medium-long on the spicy and caramel notes and also here still with a slight menthol freshness. Quite good.

Edit. I really like this one. Tasted at Prague Rumfest 2025 which made me buy a bottle. Wood, coconut and floral notes at first. After a while more earthy and chocolate notes appear. Overally it's woody, spicy, earthy When comparing to the 2009 edition I would say that the 2009 is more woody, earthy and has those dark hints. Whereas the 2011 is little bit fresher and has a little more chocolate and sweet hints. My preferences go to the 2009, but it's just the matter of taste. Still, to me, both are excellent bottles.

Punchy fruity aroma, but pleasant. Quite tingly on the tongue, taste of plums or similar and the middle with more of a peppery, woody/tobacco finish. Took a few glasses (not in the same night) to really enjoy it, but now I think it is fantastic. Maybe not the best for a beginner, but here we are! Definitely buy again!

Woody and spicy with tobacco notes. Hot alcohol on the palate. Amazing on the nose while in the bottle, and has a sweet almost cedar/cigar (non-smoky) aroma. Some leather influence on the palate and finish. Disappointed to notice it also contains food coloring, and I am not sure why that is necessary. Update: I gave it some time. Complex flavor of sweet spices. Gets more enjoyable every time I try it.
