A very old Savanna finished four months in an ex-TDL Trinidad cask — heavy and oily, with dried fruit, leather, roasted wood and vanilla up front, peach and cherry underneath, and a cooling eucalyptus-mint streak. At 61.3% the alcohol sits surprisingly well; give it air in the glass first.

Wow. An incredibly inviting complex heavy nose: ripe peach, juicy cherries, mint and leather, a bit of varnish and rubber tires. On the palate then intense with strong English breakfast peach iced tea, heart cherries, eucalyptus and mint, caramelized apricot, dark chocolate with sea salt, intense but not too intrusive tannins and an almost endless finish and a slightly dirty profile that subtly reminds of Caroni. Maybe the finish was not "just" a TDL but a Caroni? Who knows. Delicious stuff in any case! Edit: now noticeably woodier and more bitter after tasting it sober again, hence a slight adjustment downwards.

Very special rum! Nose: Vegetables, Maggi, wood, celery Palate: Wood, vegetables, celery, light sweetness. Long finish, somewhat astringent. Overall, a traditional savanna only comes through briefly at the very beginning. For me, the rum is past its zenith, and it also has a distinct lack of vegetable notes. I can't really taste the TDL cask finish.

A very nice, old Savanna. The wood influence is, for my taste, still borderline. Dried fruits, peach, leather, and tea. I find the slight hint of mint very interesting, which probably comes from the TDL finish.

9:On the nose, heavy with varnish, rubber, roasted wood notes with nuts, toffee, biscuits, spicy, some metallic patina, citrus and dried fruits, peaches, fresh, minty, herbal sugar cane, dark with black tea, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the cane is flowery and vegetal, sweet with honey, the wood also sweet with caramelized notes, spicy with vanilla and allspice.Fruits like orange, apricot arise, some red fruits. 9:On the palate, the attack is delicious, creamy, a bit dry, with bourbon notes like peaches, citrus fruits, roasted wood notes with butterscotch, roasted nuts, pastry, sweet, spicy with vanilla, slightly salty, smoky, there are hints of toasted coconut.The rum is complex, as the sugar cane is flowery, herbal, fresh with tea.When the rum is oxidized, dried fruits, cherries and mango join the game.Medicinal notes give us a feeling of heaviness, with rubber, polish, some bitterness crawls in after a while, perhaps eucalyptus and the cane becomes candied. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and tannic, slightly industrial with rubber and tar, as different roasted wood notes, spicy and smoky, pair various fruits and candied cane, flowery, dark with black tea. The nose immediately reveals strong fruit molasses notes. I would guess a Grand Arome here, with a very small Herr influence. Creamy, pronounced but deliciously integrated alcohol, full-bodied and round. Really delicious, for the price I'll have to think about buying a bottle.

a Savanna traditionnel, 16 years tropical, 5.5 years continental, 4 months TDL 2008 finish...that's a statement! The nose has a typical Savanna profile with bourbon vanilla, overripe tropical fruits, pickled compote, caramel, polish. The TDL finish fits well here, as we're not looking at early 2000s menthol bombs here, but rather yellow fruits (although some freshness does come through). Mocha and leather on the palate, but also brutal tannins, which particularly characterize the finish. An interesting experiment, perhaps a few years less in the barrel would have been enough.

Great stuff, this Savanna. Quite woody and caramel-like on the nose, plus various fruits like peach and apricot. On the palate, it's very similar, with some vanilla added, as well as dried fruits and leather.

German Rum Festival 2025, Berlin. A nose of overripe and partly moldy apples in an old damp cellar. Old varnished wood and a spicy side. The palate repeats the flavors of the nose, overripe apples and old moldy wood, but adds a nice slightly spicy sweetness. The finish is different again, although it keeps the spicy sweetness. The apple is almost fresh and some vegetal notes bring extra freshness. A rum that is very much liked!

Great design, very interesting key data, a finish that makes you feel new, a very old Savanna. This could be something! And it will be something! Tropical fruit, even more dark fruit and a pleasant woodiness, plus leather. The consistency is smooth and creamy. The aromas are very intense, mouth-filling on the palate. The finish is also noticeable. The finish is of medium length. Very tasty, but also very expensive at over €200 for 50cl.

This is a really heavy dark intense Savanna.. reminds me a bit of an old Demerara KFM/MEC. Only that the Savanna still contains dark fruits. Both on the nose and on the palate. Nice complex and long-lasting finish.. I really like it and it totally suits my taste.

30-08-2025 - Rate 9.0 German Rum Festival 2025 Next we arrived at Vagabond Spitits. And they totally took us by surprise. The first rum with them was Savanna. And what a Savanna. Some of the best I have ever tasted. First the artwork on the bottles are amazing. Showing a lot of passion. Nose full of dried fruits, caramel and wood/oak. Palate is close to the smell. #5615 31.08.2025 Tasted at the German Rum Fest 2025. This one is an amazing Savanna and I bought a bottle right away. The profile is slightly different from what you normally get, but still up to par and a great rum. Nice balance and very good ABV integration. The wood is well balanced and there are not too many tannins interfering with the leather, light peaches and some dried fruit. There is a light polish note in there as well some caramel, mint and light citrus. Very nice and something Savanna lovers should try.

After a long aeration, this Savanna reveals a great aromatic richness. The alcohol is very well integrated. Nose mixing wood, cherry, leather. The mouth is powerful but perfectly integrated, with touches of leather, wet wood and menthol. Endless finish for this beautiful Reunion/Trinidad marriage (4 months TDL 2008 finish).

The nose is really good, but the knockout comes on the palate and lasts well into the finish. You get an incredible mix of wood, leather, tea and vanilla, as well as peach and cherry aromas. The alcohol is really perfectly integrated.

Comes across as strongly spicy... Very strong with amazing complexity. Fruity rather in the background or subtle. Cherry and peach come closest. Blind, I certainly wouldn't have guessed a Savanna here.

The 15th GRF was a while ago. Now I'm finally getting around to the after-tasting. I'm really curious about this one. Nicolas and his girlfriend were super nice, with so much heart and soul involved. And that results in some outstanding rums. Nose: full-bodied, compact, and matured. At first, old, good wood, maybe sandalwood, with pleasant vanilla and a soft caramel or honey note with a deep, heavy sweetness. Behind that, a dense blood orange aroma as well as dried apricot. Alongside the sweetness, also a slight fruity acidity of blackcurrant and ripe gooseberry. At the very back, fine malty smoke. Absolutely excellent. 8.9 Palate: again very full-bodied, complex, and really tasty. At first slightly bitter, then immediately salty-metallic and quickly transitioning through a medicinal plaster note to citrus fruit, lemongrass, and dried blackcurrant. Towards the end, green tea and pleasant sweetish mint come in. The finishing maturation in the TDL cask is already noticeable. On the finish slightly sweetish, plaster, a hint of fresh mint and mirabelle. 9.0 Not exactly cheap, but an outstanding old molasses Savanna with a very well-chosen finishing. Had to take a bottle!

👃🏼 = it's pleasantly heavy and rich with a salad of tropical and yellow fruits, woodiness, vanilla, caramel, and a slight menthol freshness. 👄 = of course, the alcohol level expresses itself immediately, ample, without disturbing, with a fatty texture, leather, a note of honey and olive before finishing on a long spicy finale. This excellent very old molasses rum hits your nose and palate hard, its concentration with grand arôme airs, to be savored very slowly 👌

Verdict: this is a phenomenal rum! It has matured intensively, and it's quite woody, with quite some polished quality, even oily, but very well balanced on the spice, and even with a freshness of ow fruit and mint. Just superb. 91 points Nose: very dignified, with quite some oak, furniture polish, even a bit of engine oil, vanilla, caramel, pecan, cooked and tinned yellow fruit, sweet spice, and, when breathing in the glass, liquorice as in cough syrup. Just perfect. Palate: oh my goodness, this is oily and dense. Quite sweet associated, on vanilla, tinned peach, dark sugar or molten molasses, plenty of oak, polish, leather, tobacco, cinnamon buns, a hint of refreshing mint and red apple. Finish: very long and refined. Pleasantly melting pot of wood, warming spice, buns, polish, leather, cooked fruit, vanilla and mint.

Very appealing profile with heavy sweetness, vanilla, leather, tea, cooling eucalyptus notes, some tobacco, plus noticeable red fruits on the palate and finish. Complex and with aromatic layers, the alcohol still provides a subtle "tingle" on the palate. Apart from that, there's nothing to complain about, great release.

Tasted at the Multi Verres Spirits show in Lyon in February 2025: superb! The nose is very full and heavy. Weathered wood, TDL fruit. The fruit comes back strongly on the palate, with notes of peach and tea. Quite woody finish, a touch astringent, but very long. The oldest Savanna bottled today?

Je le trouve formidable ! Il faut le laisser reposer un peu dans le verre pour ne pas être gêné par l alcool et sa grosse concentration. Il y a une incroyable palette olfactive et gustative. Je n ai rien trouvé de dérangeant , le toutest trèsbienéquilibré.Au début l alcool pourrait paraître un peu trop présent, mais finalement il est bien intégré. Son côté rassurant : fruité, caramel, cerise un peu amer, vanille. Son côté fun : cuir et verni au nez. Bouche : des passages mentholés Fin de bouche : bonbon à la violette Et pour le plaisir des yeux un packaging magnifique !

Last review of 2025. This rum did sit in the glass for a good 20 minutes before the review. On the nose: Roasted woody, leathery notes with dried fruits. Little bit of tannings. Sweet note is kind of syrupy vanilla/caramel note. There is minty notes and tea notes in the background. Taste: Woody, roasted and leather notes. Dried fruits, peaches. It does have a heavy body with eucalyptus notes at the back. The palate then changes to almost like a creamy and dry mouthfeel. Tea notes. Mild sweetness. Finish: Woody, leather notes. Eucalyptus, Minty and black tea notes. Dried fruits. Little bit of tannings. Medium-long finish It has some of those typical "Savanna notes", but probably due to its aging this rum could offer more for me, especially the finish was richer .

Another superb Savanna, dark as desired. Honestly woody, vanilla, and leathery on the nose. Fruity and minty notes. On the palate, it's dark as expected. Bitterness. Cherry pit. Leather. Tea. These notes become even more pronounced over time. Just the right amount of bitterness. Superb.

Le nez est phénoménal, avec ce caramel dégoulinant sur ce chocolat au lait. Il y a aussi pas mal de fruits jaunes : brugnon, pêche, abricot. On est aussi frappée par la puissance de l'eucalyptus et quelques marqueurs de camphre qui apporte quelque éléments médicinaux au breuvage. En bouche, l'alcool est un monument d'intégration malgré les 61,3° qui devraient dépoter. On sent nettement l'influence du TDL avec quelques accents goudronnés mais le tout est parfaitement équilibré. Le cuir et le bois humide nous disent qu'on est en présence d'un vieux papy, mais c'est un rhum qui reste frais avec un peu de menthol et d'eucalyptus. Le tout est gras, envahissant, voluptueux, et on évolue vers du bâton de réglisse. La finale est interminable, et revient vers ce qu'on apprécie dans un TDL. On ne sait plus vraiment si on est en présence d'un TDL avec de l'influence réunionnaise, ou un Savanna bercé par la complexité d'un rhum de Trinidad et Tobago. Un super réussite qui mérite selon moi un 93/100. J'ai souvent du mal avec les Savannas, à part quelques exceptions (Madras par exemple qui est un monument), mais le mariage marche du tonnerre ici.

I probably have a mega strong Savanna in the glass here! The nose has very interesting fruit notes, ranging from dried fruits over peach and yellow fruits to apricot and mirabelle. The spiciness mainly comes through wood and leather notes, which then transition into caramel and vanilla. A fresh, minty note shows the character of the distillery. On the palate, it is then spicy and woody, before dried fruits, caramel and vanilla come forward again. A slight roast note leads over to rock sugar and brings back fruitiness of peach, mirabelle and cherry. Tea and eucalyptus provide a floral side. The long and complex finish consists of the notes from nose and palate and adds some black tea. Mint and barrel notes let it end pleasantly. A delightfully tasty and multi-layered Savanna. Had many associations coming to me while experiencing this rum. Very gourmand to me, with notes of dried smoky plum and galia melon on a vanilla, leather base. Funnily enough it reminds me of a Tom Ford perfume. The ending is a bit astringent with traces of black tea and interestingly enough also salty! This savory and briny combination intrigues me and therefore pushes this to a 9.0. Opulent, well-textured and challenging.

On the nose mainly dried fruits. On the palate also many dried fruits, dates, raisins etc. The alcohol is well integrated, bites a little at the back. Nice Grand Arome markers. I find less wood stain than in other comparable bottlings. Really a nice rounded thing. The finish is medium length, again with dried fruits and then slightly woody with slight bitterness. Successful bottling!

Absolutely fantastic. An enchanting nose that immediately captivates. Lots of wood and an incredible depth and complexity. You can spend a lot of time with it and keep discovering new things. The finish in the T.D.L cask harmonizes incredibly well with the rum. Chapeau 👏🏻

1️⃣🐏 Silva Collection- Savanna- 21 ans(16 ans tropical et 5,5ans de continental ex bourbon)-61,3%- finish 4 mois ex TDL2008. 👃 Mhouahaha j’aime ce nez! Je vis pour sentir des jus comme ça! Sur l’eucalyptus-mentholé-herbacé- évoluant sur du fruit compoté (pêche…) 👄 La bouche est rassurante-onctueuse-ronde, les esthers sont là mais pas omniprésent! Le boisé est doucement vernis, avec du fruits très agréable! L’alcool est parfaitement intégré et vient mettre un « kick » sur une olive délicieuse!

It's good OK, but far too expensive for what's in the glass. I love the tdl, but here it's omnipresent and relegates the savanna to the background. I must say that the Silva tdl was very pronounced. Either it stayed too long in the finish, or the savanna had no character. Too bad.

Nose: Heavy, oily molasses with distinct roast notes. Behind that show caramelized yellow fruits, menthol and eucalyptus. Added are wax notes, damp forest floor and a fresh note of green apples. Over time clearly fruitier: apricot, peach as well as overripe papaya and mango. The alcohol is very well integrated. Palate: Very fatty, creamy mouthfeel. Strong but balanced alcohol. The roast notes dominate, followed by intense fruit. Surprisingly strong maritime influences (brine) and oily black olives. Also leather, charcoal smoke and a dry wood spice. Finish: Extremely long and viscous. Here the TDL finish comes massively through: lots of tar, thick molasses and the typical heaviness that combines with the power of the rum from La Réunion. For me it was already a highlight at the fair in Nuremberg, Vagabond Spirits pulled something really big out of the hat, fantastic!

08/03/2026: Brussels Rhum Festival @ Tour & Taxis. A 22yo Savanna which spent 4 months in an ex-TDL cask. Even though its a relatively short finish, the TDL character is very noticeable. Very nice rum but rather expensive for 50cl.
