Flensburg Rum Company HDGDL Very High Ester 2019
Mixed neat it's wild and young — huge esters, glue, pineapple and overripe fruit, with a hot streak of alcohol that most tasters agree pushes right to the edge. Drop it in a Mai Tai or daiquiri, though, and the funk and smokiness snap into focus. A young Hampden-style Jamaican that people keep reaching for when they build cocktails.

How does Flensburg Rum Company HDGDL Very High Ester 2019 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Wild young Jamaican funk, best in cocktails Loved as a funky, fruity mixer at a fair price. Nose wins everyone over; the palate turns rougher and the alcohol shows. Great in a Mai Tai, hotter sipped neat.

Brief evaluation and assessment of the Village'25. The successor to the HDGDL now as a Very High Ester Edition. From memory it already has more oomph. Alcohol is well integrated. For me, a little better than the first. Since I have to go over the old rating, I give it an 8.5. Not a unicorn but a rum at an extremely fair price of €50. Certainly a blast as a mixer. I like it and stand by it. Detailed analysis to follow.

Strong high ester rum with intense tropical fruit notes - pineapple and mango dominate the profile. The rum has a fine, almost citrus-like freshness, paired with a subtle smokiness that can only be perceived in the background. A wonderful balance between sweetness and a slightly spicy depth - powerful and complex, but not too overpowering.

8,2:On the nose, esters and glue, funky, polish, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, fresh, grassy, flowery, vegetal molasses, briny, intense, spicy and roasted wood notes, smoky, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the rum becomes fermented with cream, cream toffee, confectionery, rubber is out. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is intense with esters, glue, funky, slightly alcoholic, fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits, later yellow and green fruits, vegetal with briny olive, grassy, flowery and herbaceous, as the wood is roasted, sweet, oily with caramel, cookie dough, hints of yeast, spicy with allspice, smoky. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry, very medicinal, funky with glue, esters, iodine, phenol, plastic, soap, fruity with fermented tropical and red(raspberry), citrus fruits, later candied, vegetal, grassy, flowery and the wood is roasted, spicy, smoky. Edit:31.1.26, in Mai Tai.

For its young age, I find this bottling surprisingly well done. Sure, it lacks a bit of balance and is quite unruly, but the markers fully hit the Hampden profile of a High Ester. And considering the price: top notch.

#5177 22.03.2025 Tasting at Whisky Watcher in Odense. Nose Fresh, fruity, medium intense, ester, overripe, light polish, faint glue, faint wood. Palate Oily, naturally sweet, medium intense, faint wood, light glue, fruity, light pineapple, overripe, ester. Finish Long, fresh, naturally sweet, light wood, faint smoke, light glue, fruity, light citrus, faint iodine. When handwarmed it gets even better and smoother.

The second HDGDL from FRC. Overall, I found the first one smoother and more intense. But this one is exactly what it’s supposed to be: a funky Jamaican at a fair price. The alcohol could be better integrated. Completely detached from the price and maybe as a funky companion in a cocktail, this rum doesn’t manage to excite me.

The name sums it up perfectly. From nose to finish, you can taste wonderful ester aromas, although the glue is also quite present compared to other rums. Alcohol on the verge of being overpowering, but certainly suitable as a mixer. PLV is great!
Review by Chrischi78
Intense nose with lots of funk and overripe fruit. Surprisingly mild, the high alcohol content is barely noticeable. On the palate, however, it is much more impetuous - powerful ester notes are in the foreground, while the fruitiness recedes into the background. Mega PLV, bomb for mixing!
Review by Boletus
As the name suggests, this one delivers full-on Jamaican esters. Intense and funky with lots of tropical fruit and a good dose of glue. However, the rum is also noticeably young and has a somewhat sharp green woody note, which I don't like that much. As a relatively affordable mixer, though, it does a great job!

Super nose full of funk and overripe fruit. Rightly soft, abv is hardly noticeable. On the palate, however, much wilder and less round, full ester power and rather less fruity. Quite a short finish. Great mixer in Mai Tai!
Review by Johannes
Not exactly the fruitiest, but overall nice high ester profile, more on the astringent side, with a very good plv.

Exhibition review The Village 2025, Nuremberg: Ha, almost missed the fact that it's a new version of the HDGDL, which was also presented at the Village Nuremberg last year. A direct comparison between the two is still pending. But the HDGDL is not only a good mixer, it is also very good to drink straight. Fruit, glue, funk, nicely integrated alcohol. A "low brainer" for the price.

At this price, you can't go wrong if you're looking in this direction. Both as a mixer and for drinking neat. Esters, overripe fruits, glue, vanilla, some wood. The alcohol is well integrated and it lacks depth here. But the price-performance ratio is top.

07-06-2025 Tasting af Kevin’s Really nice to try. Big surprise. Better than expected. Would like to know the accurate mark. It is as it says on the label, Very High Ester. Full funk and power and a high ABV.
Review by Beaureve
Nose: Esters and glue notes. There are also distinct fruity notes. Taste: delivers what the nose promises - esters, glue notes, fruit. Also a slight alcoholic sharpness. I really like it in a Mai Tai. Here it can shine (compared to the others I've tried so far - Hampden 8 and Worthy Park Single Estate) with its power and higher proof. Tasty. Very good value for money. However, probably more for cocktails (although also drinkable neat).

The smell you expect from a young Hampden. But not as brutal as some other representatives, the fruit is still nicely recognizable and not overpowered. In the mouth it continues without surprises, but with clearly noticeable alcohol, a bit too much for me. Overall a very affordable rum, which for me is probably less for pure enjoyment and more suitable for great cocktails.
Review by Schnubbii
Pretty good neat, then makes a really good impression as a mixer. Lately, I've had clearly worse releases in the glass. Maybe a bit expensive, but still a nice one. Thanks to Jörg for the sample!

Super well integrated alcohol. Becomes "warm" in taste with water.
Review by Alexander Rasch
Ufff... This is purely a mixer and therefore hard to rate. The nose is quite interesting with the high citrus content. But on the palate, it's barely drinkable for me. Too sharp and alcoholic. I really don't need that. Definitely very usable in a cocktail.

Village 25 fair rating: Beautiful high-ester profile with great PLV. Classic profile with nice astringency and sweetness out the back and enough punch. Recommended.
Review by Master P
Start with lots of sweet yellow fruits, funk and a little glue. Taste is initially oak and liquid, yellow fruit and subtle honey sweetness. Alcohol then noticeably comes to the forefront and remains present in the finish. But for the price, a good sipper.

Really bomb in a daiquiri, the fruitiness and smokiness is nicely highlighted when mixed. By itself you basically taste what you smell. Funky overripe fruits with a woody layer. Not too complex but for the price it is really fair!
