Flensburg Rum Company HDGDL Very High Ester 2019

Mixed neat it's wild and young — huge esters, glue, pineapple and overripe fruit, with a hot streak of alcohol that most tasters agree pushes right to the edge. Drop it in a Mai Tai or daiquiri, though, and the funk and smokiness snap into focus. A young Hampden-style Jamaican that people keep reaching for when they build cocktails.

Wild young Jamaican funk, best in cocktails Loved as a funky, fruity mixer at a fair price. Nose wins everyone over; the palate turns rougher and the alcohol shows. Great in a Mai Tai, hotter sipped neat.

Brief evaluation and assessment of the Village'25. The successor to the HDGDL now as a Very High Ester Edition. From memory it already has more oomph. Alcohol is well integrated. For me, a little better than the first. Since I have to go over the old rating, I give it an 8.5. Not a unicorn but a rum at an extremely fair price of €50. Certainly a blast as a mixer. I like it and stand by it. Detailed analysis to follow.

Strong high ester rum with intense tropical fruit notes - pineapple and mango dominate the profile. The rum has a fine, almost citrus-like freshness, paired with a subtle smokiness that can only be perceived in the background. A wonderful balance between sweetness and a slightly spicy depth - powerful and complex, but not too overpowering.

#5177 22.03.2025 Tasting at Whisky Watcher in Odense. Nose Fresh, fruity, medium intense, ester, overripe, light polish, faint glue, faint wood. Palate Oily, naturally sweet, medium intense, faint wood, light glue, fruity, light pineapple, overripe, ester. Finish Long, fresh, naturally sweet, light wood, faint smoke, light glue, fruity, light citrus, faint iodine. When handwarmed it gets even better and smoother.

The name sums it up perfectly. From nose to finish, you can taste wonderful ester aromas, although the glue is also quite present compared to other rums. Alcohol on the verge of being overpowering, but certainly suitable as a mixer. PLV is great!

Intense nose with lots of funk and overripe fruit. Surprisingly mild, the high alcohol content is barely noticeable. On the palate, however, it is much more impetuous - powerful ester notes are in the foreground, while the fruitiness recedes into the background. Mega PLV, bomb for mixing!

8,2:On the nose, esters and glue, funky, polish, overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, fresh, grassy, flowery, vegetal molasses, briny, intense, spicy and roasted wood notes, smoky, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, the rum becomes fermented with cream, cream toffee, confectionery, rubber is out. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is intense with esters, glue, funky, slightly alcoholic, fermented tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, red fruits, later yellow and green fruits, vegetal with briny olive, grassy, flowery and herbaceous, as the wood is roasted, sweet, oily with caramel, cookie dough, hints of yeast, spicy with allspice, smoky. 8,1:The finish is medium long, dry, very medicinal, funky with glue, esters, iodine, phenol, plastic, soap, fruity with fermented tropical and red(raspberry), citrus fruits, later candied, vegetal, grassy, flowery and the wood is roasted, spicy, smoky. Edit:31.1.26, in Mai Tai

Super nose full of funk and overripe fruit. Rightly soft, abv is hardly noticeable. On the palate, however, much wilder and less round, full ester power and rather less fruity. Quite a short finish. Great mixer in Mai Tai!

Avg Rating 8.3/10 over 2,700 Rums

No rum is more imitated than Jamaican rum. This is the home of funk, the fruity, overripe-banana intensity that drinkers call hogo, made in the biggest pot stills outside Irish whiskey. When the rest of the Caribbean moved to the column still, Jamaica kept the pot still as its house style, and that stubbornness is exactly why its rum is so prized today.
