Twenty-three years in cask, and the wood almost wins — several tasters say the oak closes the profile up rather than opening it. Underneath sit the classic Port Mourant markers: licorice, anise, dried fruit, roast and that oily mouthfeel, wrapped in a restrained caramel-molasses sweetness. Mature and balanced, but the 47.2% leaves it feeling a touch thin, and the finish fades. Cross-tasters lean toward the younger Bristol PMs.

#7177 17.08.2026 Slow day at work today so a few samples and some nice Trance on Spotify might help a bit. Pretty decent PM and so was the price tag at release. Fruity profile with roasted wood, spice, licorice, medicinal, leather and light salt.

Looking at the set of Bristol‘s 99 PM bottlings from 11y to 23y: On the nose all bottlings come with a good intensity despite the reduced ABV. All are transporting classic PM notes, showcasing the profile at different points in time. Particularly the 11y was a positive surprise compared to some 2010ish younger continental PMs. The sweetspot for me comes with the 15y - display a nice balance of cask notes (including dried fruits) and some lifeliness. 16y comes with a noticeable smokey notes. At 23y both bottlings show a bit too much wood on the nose, somewhat closing the profile up instead of enhancing it significantly. On the palate all six bottlings show a decent amount of sweetness (candied herbs) even up to the 23y bottlings. For the latter two, wood and herbal notes clearly take over, taking the lifeliness of the younger bottlings. Those are nice and mature, but again I‘m feeling the sweetspot at the 15y mark here. The 15y adds dried fruits versus the 16y delivering some smoke - similar to the nose. The low ABV isn’t what I would have wished for. However, intensity is decent - only the finish seems to lose quite a bit. Cheers to Johannes for curating this set :)

Bristol PM Crosstasting #7: Very similar to the Bristol PM from Berry Bros & Rudd, but a tiny bit weaker. Lots of caramel, dried fruits and wood (oak) from nose to finish. On the palate nice roasted aromas and cherry, which unfortunately is not as intense as in the Berry Bros bottling.

Now testing two Port Mourant Bristol Classic rums again. In both, the drinking strength is unfortunately a bit weak in my opinion. The markers are clearly recognizable. Unfortunately, both lack a certain kick somehow. I liked RX23721 better than RX1600.

Many annotations of the classic PM profile with oily mouthfeel. Still, compared to other 1999 Port Mourants from Bristol, this rum seems a bit thinner in flavor fullness. Typical notes of allspice, licorice, anise, wet wood and roasted aromas are here too, wrapped in a sweet veil of caramel and molasses, but pleasantly restrained. Nice complexity, but intensity could be higher.

Besides the 99-14 Port Cask, my favorite in the series. The 8 extra years really do it good and bring out a super balanced profile.

Bristol Port Mourant 99 vertical, this is a delicate and less wood driven profile, even though it is rather straightforward, all it does, it does superbly well. If this was more complex, this would have been an all time great demerara
