Plantation Original Dark Overproof
Banana, brown sugar and dried fruit sit under a big wall of alcohol here — at 73% this is a hammer to your palate, as one taster put it. Most people found it too hot and tobacco-heavy to enjoy neat, but it wakes up in cocktails and even hot drinks. A few drops of water or a long rest helps if you insist on sipping it.

How does Plantation Original Dark Overproof taste?
Aggregated from 17 community reviews.
Fiery overproof, built for mixing not sipping Divisive. A handful sip it with water and love the fruit-and-spice punch, but most agree it's rough neat and belongs in a cocktail or a hot toddy.

Now this one is a hammer to your palate. Though the proof is super high, Plantation has managed to create a very well balanced rum. You may need a few drops of water, but I just left it to rest for 30 minutes and it was great. Fruity and spices all the way through and a very warm and strong finish. I was very surprised at how well the alcohol was integrated in this rum! Definitely worth the price.

Perfect for cocktails! But pure is not to my taste.
Review by Thunderbird
Phew... this is already strong tobacco on its own, the alcohol bites hard. Nevertheless, fruit and spice flavors also come through. Amazing... but I also have it in my glass more for mixing. And it comes through quite well there 👍🏻

Tasted 29-01-2016 When I first tasted this I gave it a really bad tasting notes due to not understanding the place an overproofs has in a bar line up . Not revisited as been long replaced but due to other issues with Maison ferrand (Barbados GI)it can go to the bottom of my list .

Quite decent for only three years of storage and goes well in cocktails. Not really a treat neat 😂especially quite alcoholic. Raisin, banana, dried fruit and burnt sugar with spices. Also great in hot drinks.

Ok for a standard drink. Pure rather less.

Read full review →Definitely not for me. I would imagine an Overproof rum drinker would have one eye, a beard and a parrot on their shoulder. The other Plantation rum's in the range are excellent, however. I will be posting some more reviews of their Underproof offerings soon.
