The cask definitely did quite some work here. On the nose I get a lot of wood and bourbon vanilla alongside roasted nuts. For a DOK nose, this is remarkably balanced and “round”. No questions asked: there is still plenty of funk with solvent notes and rich tropical fruits. Wood, chocolate and a lot of vanilla on the palate with plenty of power. Again there are tropical fruits, some funk and chemical notes. Yet this is all very much tamed by a lot of bourbon cask notes and not quite the “hammer” I’m used to from other DOK bottlings. Looking at this bottling versus the DOK rare cask (RX13401), I can only reiterate how much work the cask has done here. Compared to the (older) RC bottling, the cask influence - vanilla in particular - has taken over too much to let the DOK funk fully shine. While you can find some DOK markers as said above, the balance in the RC is way better delivering a more complex profile with much more emphasis on rich fruits and spices. That being said, I still think this is a nice bottling and very enjoyable. It just doesn’t hit the DOK characteristics very much anymore.

8,5:On the nose, esters and solvents, funky, roasted wood notes like roasted nuts, cocoa, spicy, as bourbon barrel impact is noticable, some cream, orange and tropical fruits, then immediately melon and apricots, some of the fruits are candied, the molasses is flowery. On aeration, nougat, vanilla and almonds arise, other yellow fruits and coconut, some vegetal and herbaceous aspect of molasses. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters and solvents, fruity with tropical fruits, like toasted coconut, later citrus and yellow fruits, well some of the red fruits become candied, the bourbon barrel impact is strong with roasted wood notes like roasted nuts, milk chocolate, pastry, later cocoa, spicy with vanilla and cinnamon, oaky and salty,The molasses is herbaceous, vegetal and slightly earthy. On oxidation, tannins are out. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, balanced, the barrel impact is weaker, as tropical fruits like banana and pineapple are pairing yellow fruits, the wood is roasted, creamy with butterscotch, cream, nutty, slightly spicy, as the molasses is flowery. Edit:6.2.26, an upgrade, oxidation helps a lot

Und der letzte für heute ein geiler DOK. Ja genau mein Profil. Tropische Früchte, Ester und auch Lösungsmittel. Echt guter Stoff. Danke an Dom für die Samples. Du hast echt Geschmack :-) Bis zum nächsten Communitytreffen...

#5607 Enjoyed at the Colours of Rum tasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. Now we're getting somewhere. Full power on the nose and palate. A nice intense and fruity profile, but it has a few edges and I think leaving for longer would hav benefitted it a lot. Still very fruity with lots of esters and fruits and a hint of flowers.
