Swell de Spirits Bielle #19 Gaston for Passion Rhums Bielle 2014
Menthol and licorice run right through this one — an unusually fresh, minty aged agricole with cane, floral notes and yellow fruit (apricot, plum) sitting on dark chocolate. Several tasters flag a cognac-cask influence and a spicy, peppery finish. At 53.5% the alcohol reads well integrated, though it wants 30 minutes of air. A couple of Bielle regulars found it fruitier and less classic than expected.

8,6:On the nose, sugarcane, fresh, minty, flowery, medicinal with solvents, perhaps varnish, roasted wood notes like milk chocolate, caramel, spicy allspice, nuts, yellow fruits and hints of mango, cherry, orange, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, sugarcane is mineral, herbaceous, candied, dark with licorice, orange peel, bergamot, dried currants arise, pastry, vanilla, ginger, slightly resinous wood and leather. 8,5:On the palate, the attack is fresh with minty, grassy, flowery sugarcane, mineral, later sweet with honeycomb, dark with licorice, fruity with dried, yellow fruits, grapes, cognac barrel impact is obvious, medicinal with menthol, as the wood is roasted with dark chocolate, pastry, caramel, leather, spicy with ginger, vanilla, slightly resinous. 8,6:The finish is long, dry&tannic, the oak is toasted with roasted nuts, gingerbread, vanilla, fruity with dried, yellow, citrus fruits and sugarcane is fresh with tea, grassy, flowery, peppery, dark with licorice. Nice gold. 🏅⚜️⚱️ Lacquer, solvent, some cake, some citrus. Strong, balanced, well melted. Over time (30 minutes plus) more floral, flowery. Very full-bodied, strong, peppery. Long peppery finish. Well, not bad, but from Swell as well as Bielle you expect more.

#6971 27.06.2026 Back from our 10 km walk that turned into a 16 km one because we missed a turn. Listening to some Psy Trance on Spotify to wind down and get ready for tomorrows walk. A very nice Bielle with a good price tag at release in my mind. Well balanced and minty rum with spices, fruits, chocolate, roasted wood and some licorice.

Tasting at RF 2025. 👃 Lots of fresh citrus but also in zest form, nice mild spices, vanilla, sun-soaked cane, light mint. 😋 On yellow fruits still on the tree (peach, apricot, plum), vanilla, menthol freshness, rich and tasty pastries. ⛳ Freshness of aged cane, bitterness of present wood, licorice sticks, spices.

Comparing the two new Bielle from Swell. In my opinion both solid releases, but neither really blows me away (I'm not a big Agricole fan anyway). The #20 has a slight edge.

Very tasty and fruity Bielle from Swell de Spirits. On the nose I have sugarcane, wood, fresh, floral aromas, fruity notes of citrus fruits and orange peel, as well as mint, confectionery, and milk chocolate. Allspice and pepper provide a spicy component. On the palate, besides menthol and licorice, a nice sweetness comes through. Floral aromas, dark chocolate, vanilla, confectionery, apricot, plum, yellow fruits, sugarcane, and agricole create a nice flavor profile, which is quite fruity for an agricole. The medium-length finish is spicy and woody with notes of sugarcane, licorice, spicy wood, fresh hints, yellow fruits, citrus fruits, pepper, and tea. I find it quite pleasant to drink and the 53% suits it well. Thanks to @BananaJoe for the good sample 😀

Not a very objective opinion, but here is my detailed impression (bottle unfortunately empty by Saturday night, no dedicated photo): N: cane, freshness, menthol, licorice. Gourmand, frangipane, milk chocolate, vanilla. P: rich & oily texture, menthol, licorice, woody like cognac > yellow fruits, apricot, plum. On a bed of dark chocolate. F: medium length, white wood, licorice.

Tasted at RhumFest Paris 2025. Another Bielle bottled by Swell. This one has a surprising profile for this distillery. A familiar pastry side but also very fresh notes of licorice and menthol. Alcohol well integrated. Very cool.

And another aged Agricole that tastes slightly nutty. But the floral notes come through clearly. Much smoother than 23923, although younger. Very good rum, even if not quite as powerful as 23923.

Selection for the Facebook group Passion Rhums Bielle: A rum carefully chosen alongside master blender Jacques Larrent, Mika (Swell de Spirits), and myself. A magical moment that we are pleased to share with you through these two selections. The 2014 – 11 years continues the Bielle 2014 line with powerful spices, also retaining the honeyed side. Deserves good aeration to enjoy it best. We hope you appreciate it as much as we do.

For me, this Bielle is not the classic bottling. The nut and fruit aromas are too much in the foreground. The actual agricole vibe only comes through very late in the finish. The alcohol is quite present, after about 30 minutes in the glass it is a bit milder.
