I've never had a Mhoba like this in the glass! The nose reminds me more of a Guyana rum and port wine. There's hardly any of the esters I usually know from Mhoba, still very interesting! On the palate the same game, earthy heavy notes almost like an El Dorado rum with port cask finish. The result is extremely drinkable but mostly hides the character of the rum. I'm torn: today I'm surprised and thrilled by the experience of making a Mhoba appear as a Guyana rum. With some distance: blind it could also be an aged cherry brandy!

Mhoba....I would never have guessed.... If it contains Mhoba, then its DNA has been completely gutted... from the nose to the finish, I primarily perceive strongly alcoholic red wine. In addition, a woody bitterness that intensifies especially in the finish...no, that's not my thing at all... when I drink Mhoba, I want to taste it too

Mhm how do I start, Mhoba is sometimes a blast and I don't like some bottlings at all. But this one picks me up again. For me a very successful bottling. It doesn't quite come close to the Ingwe, but almost.

On the nose red currants, sour drops, and oak barrel. On the palate somewhat similar, quite sour, then a bit of caramel towards the end. Quite a wild one, won't be my Mhoba favorite now.

So this is a really strong Mhoba. The nose is very special, especially solvent, polish, and port wine. On the palate then more relaxed, slightly sweet, but also fruity and woody at the same time. Top stuff.

Yeah, it's smooth, no question. But honestly, do you really want a smooth rum from Mhoba? To me, the wine barrel is too dominant, ironing out the typical Mhoba ester edges. It remains a round, smooth distillate with excellently integrated alcohol, but due to the dominance of the wine barrel it has lost its typical DNA and somehow blends into the somewhat boring row of rums with a wine barrel finish (although you can't really call this a finish for this rum). Blind, I would probably have guessed RX653, a 2008 New Grove with port finish, which didn't excite me much either. I hope this remains a one-time experiment, because I expect rebellious punk from Mhoba, not neat classic in an ironed shirt.

#7212 24.08.2026 Relaxing with a few samples after a nice day at work and a fast walk home. Watching Gold Rush on HBO. This is a very nice Mhobe with a good price tag at release in my mind. Woody profile with fruits, spice, roasted, natural sweetness, light bitter, caramel, polish, rubber and some tannins..

The first rum that reminds me of red wine from start to finish. Unfortunately, this red wine barrel influence dominates so strongly that the other aromas are only partially noticeable. Alcohol is perfectly integrated, but the rum itself is a matter of taste.

On aeration, before tamed esters arise, burnt notes, roasted nuts and vegetal sugarcane. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with rubber, sweet with roasted wood notes like caramel, roasted nuts, peanuts, later spicy and salty, fruity with port, red wine barrel finish and notes like red fruits, sour cherry, citrus fruits, slightly astringent, on oxidation tropical fruits like banana uncover. 8:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, wine barrel impact is strong with grapes, also bourbon ageing with yellow fruits, toasted coconut and citrus fruits, the wood is roasted with dark chocolate, caramel, spicy and oaky. Ce rhum agricole d'Afrique du Sud propose un nez avec des esters assez doux, un léger fumé et surtout une présence de cette finition de vin rouge assez marqué. Un jolie surprise sur ce fruité, un boisé délicat avec quelques tanins, et un alcool très bien intégré.

Nice dark colour for a rum thats been aged for only 3 years. First time tasting Mhoba or any South African rum in general. On the nose: Surprisinly mellow for high abv rum. Balanced. I get mostly wine with notes of portwine, Red fruits and wood. Somekind of industrial notes in there. Spicy, fruity. Interesting. Taste: Wine and red fruit influence continues, not tart and sweetness and a touch of sourness comes from the red fruits. Alcohol is integrated very well. Very pleasant and good semirich palate. On the second sip i get more dark and sour cherry flavours. Finish: Pleasantly dry and that sour cherry flavour is there giving a touch of sweetness and body to the finish. The finish is somewhere between medium and long. The smell and taste is way off from the typical rum profile and in a good way. I was totally surprised by this rums taste profile and overall im very impressed.

You can clearly smell and taste the wine barrel. However, I detect a very slight sulfur note on the nose that I don't like. Besides that, red sour fruits, wood, subtle vanilla and something earthy or dark that I can't quite describe. Very similar in the mouth. The vanilla sweetness quickly turns into sour fruit. A bit dirty and woody when it lingers longer in the mouth. Drying out towards the end and still slightly sour. Better than the nose but somehow not my thing.

Very edgy and unbalanced MHOBA. Sharp solvent notes on the nose, green plant aromas and some burnt wood. Dominantly alcoholic on the palate with bitter herbal notes and hardly any fruit balance. The texture feels raw, the finish short and harsh with lingering bitterness. Overall hard to access and hardly drinkable for me, far from the better bottlings of the distillery.

And another Mhoba again, this time I didn't buy it, but it was a gift from a friend and the gift was very successful. Both in the nose and taste it is characteristic Mhoba, however, wine is strongly felt in it. In the taste it unfolds even more, red fruit, wine, tart woodiness, a bit of acidity. Very long and full finish. According to the label, it was filled into a French oak barrel without any adjustments after wine from the Lust Wine winery in South Africa. I must say, that was a lucky hand.

First discovery of South African rum, I chose this Mhoba based on the seller's advice at V&B according to my tastes. The nose at the opening has a lot of wood, red fruit with spices and a certain acidity almost metallic. The palate is almost the same as the nose, lots of wood, red fruits (cherries, prunes, blackcurrants), then spices like pepper, turmeric, and again acidity that really surprised me and almost bothered me, even though I am a fan of heavy Jamaican with lots of esters and fairly well-wooded agricole rum. So I forgot it quietly for 5 months so it could open slowly. And now it's completely different, we still have a good presence of wood with more red fruit but the invasive acidity has almost completely disappeared and has left only indulgence with an alcohol that I find well integrated even though it's a very young rum, great selection by V&B and a good discovery for my first Mhoba!!! You just have to give it time to open before tasting.
