This drinks like nobody's standard-issue Haiti. One member calls Le Rocher "the mezcal among clairins," and you can taste why: olives in brine, honeyed sugarcane, overripe fruit and a smoky, medicinal streak that shifts the longer it sits. At 54.6% the fruit and salt play tug-of-war, and the wood stays out of the way. Weird in the best sense — most tasters find it fascinating.

#6699 25.04.2026 Running a few samples after getting back from bottling the 1992 MEC by Nobilis. Listening to some nice tracks by Zephirus Kane, Linka, Ben Gold and Maarten de Jong. A pretty good release where the initial price tag was pretty good. The prorile has nice roasted wood, fruits and spices to it and the palate is light spicy. The longer it rests the more flavours start coming out of the glass.

A difficult one. On the one hand, it shows an enormous range of aromas starting with honey-sweet sugarcane to olives in brine, cheese, fermented fruits, toasted oak and medicinal smoky notes. On the other hand, the interplay feels a bit too confusing for me to be fully enthusiastic. Definitely a very exciting drop, but also a somewhat demanding enjoyment.

My first experience with Haitian canejuice rum and Rocher. The brown sugar comes through very well on the nose. Raisins and sweet fruit also emerge, with a touch of wood. I also find this one enjoyable on the palate; the same notes as the nose emerge. But now there's also a bit of oiliness, syrup, and dried fruit. Also some smoky notes and appel. Yes, I really enjoy this one.

I had high expectations for the aging of this vieux Le Rocher because starting from the distillation of cane syrup and with fermentation similar to Grand Arome, the potential could be high! On the nose, it reminds me of a mix between white clairin and Hampden, with a strong note of fermented fruits! On the palate, it keeps all the flavors of clairin with a nice woody part that doesn’t overpower the original Le Rocher character! A really well-made rum!

Tasted in good company in Paris. This old Rocher highlights overripe fruits, typical clairin notes, a satisfying syrupy fatness on the palate, and a smoky veil. 100% pleasure, it's really excellent.

On the nose: That typical medicinal, herbal note you recognice as a Haitian canejuice rum. Also dried fruits, honey. Fresh canejuice notes. Taste: Olives with medicinal and herbal notes upfront. Sweet sugarcane notes come after that. Overripe notes. Then thereis allspice notes in there. Finish: Herbal notes and roasted mouthfeel upfront. Sugarcane notes. Finishes dry. Good rum, but not a "daily driver" for me. I have to visit this rum another time.

Not a favorite for me, but you have to admit that the balance between spirit character and cask influence is well achieved here. The somewhat cheesy or yogurt note of the unaged Le Rocher I also find here. Weird but quite interesting, although I prefer the newer Vieux Vaval in direct comparison.

Edit: he doesn't really knock my socks off with Coke either After a longer time in the glass, it develops a smoky whisky note in the taste. After a short time in the glass, the sweet honey note dominated. If it hadn't made this switch, it would probably have scored better.

Direct comparison with RX23886 Vaval. Not as fresh on the nose, but still intense. On the palate then clearly more body, but above all something peppery or almost smoky comes in (smoked salt??). Interesting. In any case, also a great Clairin.

Le Rocher - the mezcal among the Clairins, I simply LOVE it and especially this bottling! Earthy. Smoky. Spicy. Woody. Floral. Burnt sugarcane. I would love to buy a bottle of it, but due to poor availability the prices have unfortunately become astronomical. Shame. One of the best Clairins I've tasted so far.

I expected something totally different and was pleasantly suprised. This is one of the best Haitis I have tasted. Never heard of Blanton before but it obviously made a good work here. The nose corresponds quite well with the palate, both rich in overripe fruits, banana, pineapple, sweet-soury olives, honey, light medicinal, vegetal and herbal notes, sweet spices, I even get hints of white wine. Bitter medicinal aftertaste.

31-07-2025 - Rate 7.8 After tasting quit a few Haiti rums and beige fund of Vieux Sajous. I had high expectations for this rum. They were not all fulfilled. Notes of herbal vegetable garden, tropical fruit and honey. Palate is herbal, olive and fruit. Short finish with mango, olive and sugar. Have an extra sample which I will save a while and then try again in some time. 27-03-2026 - Rate 7.8

Very unexpected, I haven't had anything like Haiti before. Already medicinal tones in the nose suggest that this won't follow the standard template, adding herbs and spices. On the palate an interesting combination of olives and cherries, baked finish.

In general, I find the Clairins very exciting. Also the bottling from Le Rocher. It brings quite a bit of acidity, some honey and overripe fruits. That fits quite well, but the finish brings a distinct smoky note.

Another surprise today. Pleasant nose, with strawberry notes, sugarcane and olive. It reminds me a bit of a HERR. The palate doesn't quite deliver what the nose promises. The "bitter" notes bother me too much here. I wouldn't need a bottle, but as a sample very interesting.
