Swell de Spirits T.D.L #14 Christopher Bellail Selection for Bar 1802 2000

Sip this neat and give it time — the nose starts quiet and woody, all caramel, spice and honey, then the palate flips into a rush of peach, apricot and mango. What makes it unusual for a Trinidad TDL is how little of the classic mint-menthol shows up front; several tasters admit they'd have missed the distillery blind. At 57.3% the alcohol stays well integrated, and the finish runs long, spiced and lightly minty.

The community says
  • Peach-mango burst
  • Long spiced finish
  • Keep in mind: Quiet nose

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Fruit-forward 25yo Trinidad, light on the mint Owners rate it highly and agree it's an atypical, elegant TDL — restrained on the nose, exploding with yellow fruit on the palate. Fans of the distillery's mint bombs may miss that signature.

#6559 28.03.2026 - Part 1 The first online tasting of 2026 of the group we had in Shanghai. Funny that we are now living in different parts of the world again. Singapore, Sweden, UK, Denmark and Thailand 😊 Thanks for the samples Alexander! A pretty good bottling like usual from Bar 1802. The nose is intense and fruity with roasted wood, nutts, chocolate, cherry and light mint. The palate is intense and well balanced with mango, caramel, anise, herbs and light chocolate. The finish is very long and has light roasted wood, chocolate, anise and herbs.

Tasted blind with some other TDLs (2002/2003s). After the first sniff, it was clear to me which was the 2000 TDL. The swell for Bar1802 is relatively restrained on the nose. There is a hint of mint, but wood and spices predominate. Reminds me strongly of the "Spanish" 2003 TDLs a la WDC or SoR from the February batch. With more time in the glass, the mint is pushed further and further into the background and chocolate and baking spices dominate. Oily on the palate, with lots of spices, woody, dried fruit. Not bad overall, but not my preferred TDL profile.

The third collaboration between Swell de Spirits and Bar 1802, this TDL surprises with its classy, contrasting profile. The nose is rather discreet at first, playing the refinement card with subtle pastry notes (almond, honey, a touch of candied fruit), some sweet spices (vanilla) and well-integrated oak. The fruit slowly builds in strength, with dried fruit (grapes) and yellow fruit (mango), but remains clearly in the background. The situation is reversed on the palate: there's an explosion of fruit, with peach, apricot, red berries, blackcurrant and guava in particular showing off on the palate. Spices heat up the mouth, while menthol arrives unexpectedly to offer a lovely sensory firework display. The profile is clearly more intense, and the alcohol remains well integrated despite a slight spiciness. The finish is long, with a warm, spicy, woody yet delicate aftertaste. The fruit and menthol come out of the woodwork, but the pastry side comes back to add extra sweetness. A very elegant TDL with a varied profile that will delight fans of the genre, further proof of the quality of the bottler's and bar's selection.

A rum tasted at the 1802 bar during WLP25. A rather discreet nose, woody, spicy (but without the menthol you might expect). The fruits are there, dried fruits and tropical fruits. A sweet, pastry-like side completes the profile. The palate is more expressive with all kinds of fruits, a bit of the long-awaited menthol, and spices including vanilla. The finish is rather long with other fruits (peach and red fruits) and woody tannins.

Due to the lack of mint on the nose, I wouldn't have guessed a TDL blind. Here caramel, spices and wood dominate. On the palate, the mint then appears in its usual strength with peach, red fruits, spices and wood. On the finish again peach iced tea.

Peach, passion fruit, and iced tea, along with white chocolate, mint, and a hint of red fruits. Powerful, but the alcohol is well integrated. On the palate, tobacco notes and a nice tropical fruitiness emerge. A fun T.D.L., whose nose, as with the Rhum-Attitude bottling, remains rather restrained. The finish brings orange and passion fruit. Pleasantly rounds off the overall picture with a tropical touch.

A 2000 T.D.L that I like a bit more than the typical T.D.L mint menthol bombs. For me, a solid bottling with a nice finish. I really liked it, but unfortunately I still find that the Swell is a bit above average prices, the only negative point.

Delicious 2000 TDL. Rather more unusual profile with less wood and less menthol/camphor than similar representatives. Seems more like a 2003. Cassis, as well as apricot jam and gingerbread confectionery with salted caramel meet some mint here. Overall very tasty and balanced, but not a TDL highlight.

Magnificent nose: mango, red fruits, spices, vanilla, and wood. Hint of eucalyptus but no real menthol. On the palate: menthol, chili, tropical fruits, yellow fruits, and butter caramel, slight bitterness. I really like this release, even if the spicy side and a little something missing don't put it in my top T.D.L. Long finish.

Tasting a samples of this Trinidad rum bottled by Swell de Spirits for Bar 1802. The nose is really delicious : fruits, honey, vanilla, caramel, almond, wood. Overall, kind of pastries. Palate gives fruits, mint, chili tones, honey, vanilla and wood. It hits warm and strong, we feel the alcohol before it becomes softer. Finish is long and gives many of the scents and flavours we had on n'ose and palate. This rum is a very good one :)

Difficult, it's hard to recognize the TDL style since there's no menthol notes at all. On the other hand, there are notes of yellow fruits, candied, I'd go for guava or peach. You clearly get the peach, you'd even think of an iced tea, nicely fresh and alcoholic. The whole thing is coherent, so professional.

Another magnificent swell and the 1802, a different profile, with a very different attack and finish, a phenomenal, almost surprising evolution, from gourmand and caramelized to a mango and yellow fruit bomb.
