Velier Mother Mesccia Blanc 2025

Olive, fresh sugarcane, grass and a squeeze of citrus — this is a white cane-juice rum with a Haitian clairin backbone that's been dialed way down. Several tasters note the olive and vegetal side that clairin fans know, but softer and less wild. One member summed it up plainly: "good not great," easy to sip, light on fruit, and interesting more than deep.

#5841 11.10.2025 Visiting the Whisky Live Hamburg 2025 event. It was the first of its kind and went off pretty well. They still have to learn a lot about running an event like this. People were allowed to bring backpacks and even cabin bags to the event and that is a problem in my mind. This is a pretty nice and surprisingly nice rum. First destilation in Heiti and then redistilled in Monaco.A cooperation between Velier and the Royals. Lots of sugarcane, light floral and citrus notes mix very well with the ABV.

Tasted on the occasion of Whisky Live Paris 2025. On the nose, it feels quite different from any clairin, it feels way less sweet and the olive notes are not as powerful here. I get vegetal, sweet sugarcane and floral notes. On the palate it's herbal, sweet and pepperish, also slightly salty and smoky. It's not very complex but it's interesting. Overall, it's a pleasant experience, I don't think I'd buy a bottle but I'm happy I tried.

We start with something new from Mother Mesccia - the very first rum officially distilled in the Principality of Monaco. Inspired by the Mediterranean traditions of the XVIIᵉ century and driven by the spirit of Haitian craftsmanship, this project is as singular as it is ambitious. It was in Monaco that the custom of combining rum, vermouth and marsala was born, creating the famous mesccia - a word derived from the Genoese patois meaning mixture, used by sailors of the time. The drink became widespread before being forgotten... until, in 2021, Prince Albert II decided to revive the tradition. This is where Luca Gargano, owner of Velier, comes in. In practice: a first distillation takes place at Michel Sajous (Clairin d'Haïti) to 25-30%, before transferring to Monaco for a second distillation. The result, a 47% white rum, turns out to be rather surprising in a good way: a vegetal and herbaceous profile, with a hint of olive. The Clairins signature is there, but with greater elegance and balance. A great curiosity to follow! Future aged versions promise finishes in ex-Marsala and ex-Vermouth casks, a nod to the original Mesccia.

A rum with its own particular identity. The Haitian provenance is felt but everything is toned down, brought back to a less exaggerated level. The alcohol while not particularly high makes itself felt. To be tried while waiting for the aged versions
