Chapter 7 Cuban Rum (Figee, Switzerland) 1948
"Flüssige Geschichte" is how one member put it — a Cuban distilled in 1948 and left in the cask for 76 years. Expect dark chocolate, dried fruit, coffee, tobacco and old leather, all wrapped in a heavy, oily texture. Several tasters flag a strong port-wine and rancio character, more like an old Madeira than a typical Cuban. Long, dry, slightly tannic finish.

Aggregated from 22 community reviews.
Oily, port-heavy old Cuban, a history piece Almost universally admired as a piece of rum history — complex, oily, elegant. A few find the port finish too dominant and one caught an odd sourness; the price stings for most.

A highly aromatic nose for this rum praised by Serge Valentin. Sweetness (candy sugar) but incredible complexity: varnished old wood, umami and rancio like a very old Madeira, but also a touch of tawny Port. There's also a vegetal aspect, olives and fresh tobacco. In short, an incredible complexity with rare, complex and balanced flavors. The nose's impression of old Madeira, tawny Port and very old overripe wine is absolutely confirmed on the palate. Rum? 48.9%? We're definitely somewhere else here. Then other aromas emerge, sweet wood (licorice), dried fruit, nuts, lots of bitterness and always that hint of fresh tobacco. The finish is long, with lots of umami, rancio, olive oil, cedar wood and always an incredible freshness despite the very oily side of this rum. Thanks to Sveninho for the sample. Compared to its Velier counterpart, it's much more accomplished, especially on the palate, with its irresistible rancio.

No question: a piece of rum history in the glass. Complex, elegant sweetness, leathery and earthy notes create depth, tobacco and sweet fruits balance into the gentle range. The aromas also remind you of long-aged sweet wines, but without the usually opulent sweetness in the finish. The finish is somewhat short considering the aromatic splendor, but this can definitely be considered typical for the very long-aged Cuban rums currently hitting the market. Surprisingly fresh and approachable for its age, a very convincing rum.

9,2:On the nose, round and balanced, roasted wood notes like toffee, butterscotch, chocolate, roasted nuts, bourbon, port barrel impact are obvious, leather, pastry, spicy vanilla, dried apricots and raisins, complex, elegant, some polish, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, sweet tones with burnt sugar and crème brûlée arise, roasted coffee with espresso, baking spices and umami hints, orange peel and yellow fruits, as the molasses brings vegetal aspect with olive, tobacco. 9:On the palate, the attack is oily, dry, quite heavy with sulphurous and tannic port wine notes, roasted oak notes, spicy, as our tasting buds are hyperstimulated with dried fruits like raisins and apricots, grapes, citrus fruits, roasted nuts, coffee, leather, burnt sugar, butterscotch, some confectionery, later dark chocolate. With oxidation, bitterness arises. The molasses is candied, dark with licorice, black tea, earthy tobacco. 8,9:The finish is long, dry&tannic, slightly furry, as notes from palate linger on for a long time. Edit:21.8.26

Liquid history - stored in barrels for over 3/4 of a century. 🤯 Heavy on the nose, dark fruit and a surprising amount of port wine influence. This is joined by a crazy, sour olive brine. Fascinating nose! Creamy, oily and lots of port wine flavors on the palate, which are quite strongly suppressed by the long barrel ageing. Very long and pleasant finish. A real experience and a recommendation for all those who value history and like more intense port wine influences! Many thanks @Sven for the sample! ❤️

Tasted in a flight with RX18823 (Cuba 1992) and RX20297 (Cuba 1963), the oldest Cubans in my collection. I'll keep it short: Both rums hold their own, especially the really very good '63, but in the end, they are put in their place by the Chapter 7 (1948). The Chapter 7, in my opinion, simply plays in a higher league; it is perfectly balanced and elegant, I taste honey and syrup, but hardly any alcohol. I can't imagine there will ever be a better Cuban rum. Not only because of the age of the aging, it's a milestone in distillation art. Unfortunately also because of the price, which is really way too high.

#6065 13.12.2025 Relaxing with a nice rum after coming back from Flensburg, where we had a nice dinner with my dad. Nose Round, balanced, wood, light roasted, light caramel, light cherry, faint coffee, light earthy. Palate Oily, round, balanced, wood, light salt, faint olive, light anise, light nutts, light caramel, light chocolate, light earthy, cherry. Finish Long and warm, balanced, wood, light roasted, dried fruit, light caramel. Empty glass Caramel, light chocolate, light olive, light coffee, light olive, licorice. Needs to rest for a while to really open up properly. The price is high, but it is a darn good rum.

With Cuban rums, I've become a bit more reserved lately because I haven't found any of these bottlings outstanding so far. But with this one, I have to say it has a certain complexity and drinkability that I really liked.

Explosively old rum with astonishing elegance despite 76 years of barrel ageing. The nose reveals deep, earthy tones, dark leather and spices, followed by dried citrus fruits and a hint of vanilla. On the palate, it impresses with a dense texture, subtle tobacco and some leather. The finish is surprisingly long and spicy with fine coffee notes. An exceptional experience for lovers of extremely old rums.

My first really old Cuban I think. Smells and tastes really quite good and also surprisingly complex, but not worth the asking price in terms of taste. Still cool to be able to try this rum!

I don't know what to make of this rum. You can definitely notice the age with wood, leather, tobacco, but the typical Port finish really dominates. A good rum, but somehow I'm a bit skeptical that suddenly very old Cubans are popping up everywhere, almost all with a dominant Port finish...

Since the sister cask is coming out soon, here's another tasting. Nice nose with fruit, leather, a bit of tobacco in the woody cask. On the palate, you also get nuts and coffee. The finish is nicely long but unfortunately nothing else.

Northern Lights Meeting 21.08.2026 Probably the oldest rum I've ever had the chance to try. The age is noticeable, but without the cask overpowering everything else. Super complex and considering the long time in the cask, surprisingly much fruitiness has been preserved.

Amazing part of history in the glass... it remembers even Fidel's time... absolutely complex rum, brown sugar, dark chocolate, oak wood, dried tropical fruits, tobacco, caffee, leather, honey, vanilla and I could continue... well balanced. It is smooth and rich given its 64 years in barrels. I believe it is worth its ambition price tag...

A fantastic rum. And history. Unbelievable, but it was distilled decades before I was even born. Subtle sweetness, smooth and very well balanced. Astonishing, that the cask after 76 years of maturation is still just in the background providing the stage for flavors of dried fruits, coffee and dark chocolate, tobacco and caramel. But expensive man!
Review by Sveninho
Probably the oldest rum ever bottled and therefore an exceptional drinking experience. On the nose, a bouquet of dark chocolate, tobacco, dried tropical fruit and old leather. A remarkable balance between sweetness and spice on the palate. Intense notes of dried fruit, cocoa beans and tobacco leaves are accompanied by nuances of honey, molasses and roasted nuts. Exceptionally long and complex on the finish, with lingering notes of dark chocolate, oak, spices and a hint of coffee.

Northern Lights Meeting Summer 2026 Very old, super astringent Cuban. Molasses, raisins and at the end on the finish lovage, almost a bit too much. Exciting experience, but nothing I'd buy a bottle of.

Rounded, complex, aged for first taste. But too sour for unknown reason. The sour taste is overhelming all the other tastes
