The nose here almost overshadows everything else — overripe tropical fruit, artificial strawberry gum, olive brine, mint and a chemical ester edge that pulls you back to a childhood candy store. The palate follows with papaya, passion fruit and a spicy oak backbone at a well-hidden 59.5%. Several tasters note the finish runs a touch short and dry, and a few call it "one dimensional" — very fruity, all the way through.

9,2:On the nose, esters and varnish, fermented, overripe, even rotten, pungeant strawberry, tropical fruits like maracuja, banana, pineapple, passion fruit, yellow fruits like peaches and citrus fruits, molasses with briny olive, grassy, roasted wood notes with like caramel, confectionery, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, medicinal notes like rubber, glue arise, sourness, bitter orange, very marmelade feeling, the wood is smoky, spicy with allspice, confectionery is caramelized, molasses becomes flowery, minty. 9:On the palate, the attack is intense, pungeant with overripe strawberry, slightly rotten, tropical fruits like maracuja, passion fruit, papaya, pineapple, briny olive and tomatoes, medicinal with esters, sweet with roasted wood notes like milk chocolate, perhaps cocoa, caramelized, perhaps like creme brulee, pastry, slightly smoky and spicy with vanilla and allspice, as the molasses is flowery, minty, grassy, still vegetal.When the rum is well oxidized, citrus fruits, dried apricots and peaches join. 8,9:The finish is less complex, less round, dry and tannic, as the roasted wood notes from palate, smoky and spicy, pair minty molasses and overripe tropical fruits, peaches, perhaps candied fruits. On the nose: Fruity, fermented ester profile is how i would describe this. Fruit flavours like papaya are light and dont really stand out. After sitting in the glass it get some grape notes. Taste: That ester and fermented fruit like flavour profile dominates. I get mostly papaya notes. There is some saltyness in the profile. Light wood notes in the background. The alcohol could be integrated little bit better. Finish: Feels bitter, warm and alcoholic at first. Light wood and fruity notes. Finishes off quite dry. My problem with Savanna rums eventhou i like the fruity palate, is their dry, bitter finishes don't work for me and this was unfortunately another example of that. Another thing that drops the score for me was that the estery, fermented profile dominated the taste profile too much for my liking.

Strong tropical fruit like papaya, mango, and peach dominates the nose, along with olive notes and floral freshness. The alcohol is well integrated, so the profile feels clean despite the cask strength. On the palate, the fruit takes center stage, supported by fine ester notes, herbal spice, and a light wood touch. The finish is long, warm, and rather dry with a subtle herbal and olive hint.

That nose 😍 I love that delicate, sweet scent of tropical flowers and fruit, paired with the delicious strawberry gum... On the palate, however, there is some disillusionment, with spicy notes, some wood and noticeable alcohol dominating at first. As it progresses, the aromas of the nose reappear, albeit not as intensely. The finish then combines the fruity with the spicy aromas

Intense and brutal on the nose. Lots of esters and (Savanna) funk. Lots of menthol bonbon and strawberry alongside olive grime and salt. Compared to the HERRLINE 1 this one feels a bit more fresh and a bit less woody/spicey. Both of similar high quality and HERR goodness. I slightly prefer the No. 1 in this sitting. On the palate I get a rather complex tropical fruit basket. There are plenty of esters with some milk chocolate and sweetness as well as salt at the same time. All in all the blend of HERR and C20 works pretty well forming a nice overall profile. However, for me No. 2 can not quite hold up to its predecessor due to a lack of intensity (and HERR power). Moreover, it also isn’t as well balanced and round as some of Savanna’s GAs (today’s bottling as a side by side: RX11969). All in all: very nice bottling but not quite in the top league of what Savanna can produce.

Lots of fermented overripe tropical fruit on the nose... Chewing gum and fruit esters. Slight mint and olive touch not at all disturbing. Minimal oak with vanilla. On the palate strawberry gum esters tropical fruits very ripe fruits . Slight hint of hokz. Wonderfully balanced . Very tasty .

An amazing rum that is almost on par with its predecessor. On the nose and palate, WONDERFUL Savanna-typical ester aromas mixed with a broad bouquet of tropical fruits, olives, and strawberry. Unfortunately, the finish is a bit flat, so the predecessor has the edge. Still a first-class rum! Edit: on further comparison, overall not as powerful as its predecessor. Flavor profile is a bit more bitter and not as fruity.

Delicious Savanna Blend overall. The Grand Arome portion is noticeable, but the traditional part and the Cognac cask aging are quite dominant. The finish then offers a nice interplay of cocoa, ripe rich peaches, and strawberry bubblegum. It develops better with breathing over time, and the Grand Arome really comes through well in the end.

A great rum! Fermented fruits of all kinds, especially the typical Savanna strawberry really stands out. The nose is very promising, but on the palate the rum falls a bit into a flavor hole. I expected more power here. The finish is nicely fruity and long, with a wonderful mint note lingering late in the finish.

Savanna triple tasting: on the nose similar olive notes to the brothers 991 and herrline no 1, but here more papaya than pineapple. On the palate, perhaps really the apricot. A really great rum and my favorite of the triple.

Only the length is lacking for a grand finale! Otherwise, in my opinion, my favorite Herrline. A mix of fruit, fat, salty notes, chocolate, pastry notes, a pinch of wood, but above all exceptional greediness and insane fatness.

Savanna Masterclass III. This line is really outstanding. Very fruity, especially tropical fruits can be recognized. Otherwise, there are lots of esters and especially strawberry, which outshines everything.

Complaining at a high level is what comes to mind first here. It's not too bad, but the first Herrline from Swell was a bit better. Nevertheless, already at a very high level.

Really very fruity on the nose, I find yellow and also tropical fruits. Surprisingly sweet and fruity on the palate. A full, not only tropical fruit basket, but compared to the HERRLINE #1 it is not as "pressing" or not as intense, but rather a little lighter/smoother - which was to be expected, as this is not a pure HERR. I find the note of TicTac Wintergreen, which is often typical of Savanna, only slightly on the palate and especially in the finish. The alcohol is very well integrated, this really is a very tasty, smooth, elegant and at the same time complex rum. HERR apologists may be a little disappointed because the esters don't push as hard as in HERRLINE #1, but for me both are on the same high level. Nevertheless, the high price (175€ issue price for a 0.5L bottle - lol) remains a downer, and there's no need to go into the dizzying secondary market prices. Do you have to chase after this (admittedly very tasty) rum at these conditions? I don't think so.

👃 Wow what a nose! I'm in heaven 😇 Magnificent combination of esters made in Savanna, strawberry yogurt, fresh peppery mint, and homemade meringue fresh from the oven. Lots of overripe fruits with this chemical sensation. Papaya, passion fruit, Tutti Frutti candy, green apple sour head, Tagada strawberry, original Malabar, Haribo banana. Vanilla in a sachet, notes of salty spices, green olive, mint tapenade, slight bacon. An absolutely crazy nose 🤩 😋 The exuberance of the nose is not quite found on the palate, that's its weak point. The flavors, almost identical to the nose, are quite light. Fruity and chemical esters, lactic fermentation strawberry taste, fruit tree flowers, bakery yeast pastries, spicy and peppery wood, slight freshness of peach tea drink. Kudos to the 59.5% very well integrated, they feel much less in the mouth. ⛳ Medium length thus too short, hot, bitter, dry. Light tropical fruits, spicy cocoa, chemical vanilla wood, iced peach with mint. 💡 This Th1, a blend of traditional molasses rum and a small amount of HERR (High Ester Rum Réunion), delivers an excellent nose, really excellent. Too bad the palate is just very good and the finish a bit too short. Otherwise, we would have one of the best high esters from Savanna.

Savanna tasting on 26.09.2025 – Eight samples were tasted and expertly explained. The Savanna hype somehow passed me by again, but it was a really great event. Many thanks to RumX and the Savanna team – more of this please! The Savannas are true masters and craftsmen. Complex, 60% vol., that caress the palate. Working with different styles like Creole, Traditional and HERR leads to a variety that few distilleries offer. All top-notch! Now sample number 5, the Herrline from Swell. Nice label, but Swell can do that. Powerful, very complex, alcohol integration on top. The nose pleases me quite well for an ester rum, also the fuzziness in the mouth is missing, which gives plus points. The ester lovers in the tasting group are now really excited… I can mentally understand that.

An intense Savanna that immediately takes us off to Réunion. The nose is immediately marked by esters and tropical fruits (papaya, passion fruit, banana) and strawberry, but also by salty notes leaning towards olive. There is also menthol and a slight fermented side that balances the ultra-chemical bubblegum aspect. A powerful nose in the pure tradition of great Savanna rums. No doubt on the palate either, this is definitely Savanna. An avalanche of fruits floods the palate: strawberry, peach, passion fruit, papaya, and maracuja among others succeed each other in an exotic spectacle. The medicinal and esterified side comes with the wood and allspice to support the profile and add complexity. We have a rich, indulgent, powerful profile with great finesse despite everything. The alcohol is superbly well integrated. The finish is very long, alternating warmer and bitter sequences with rounder, vanilla and menthol notes. The exotic fruits here support the end of the mouth to give the final touch. A remarkable Savanna with which one travels and doesn't want to land.

How juicy can a rum smell? Fantastic. A mix of peach iced tea with strawberries and mint in a summer drink, tropical fermented fruits and hardly any alcohol – pure fruit! On the tongue, more cask and strong aromas come through, plus lots of esters and a huge fruit basket. Develops very excitingly over time, which it really needs to work through the high complexity. Great rum!

Northern Lights Meeting 07/25: Nose of fermented fruit, esters. The smell alone keeps you busy for a few minutes, or even hours. It continues in the mouth in the same way. You have the feeling you are tasting your way through a tropical fruit basket. Medium-long dry and fruity finish.

Extreme ester fruit bomb with all kinds of tropical fruits. Feels very round, even though the amount of caramel, chocolate, or vanilla is rather low and sits in the background. On the palate, these flavors come through a bit stronger, but the fruits dominate through and through.

Incredible guy without direct comparison! Gummy bears, strawberry, esters in perfection! Must be tasted soon in comparison... It's not a "Herr" but a TH1, so a blend of traditions and "Herr". According to Sam, "Herr" is 5-20%. That's why it's so perfectly integrated.

Another superb representative of the HERR from Savanna. This one is a bit below its predecessor in my opinion. You still find everything that makes it typical but I find it less marked by strawberry. It remains funky, nicely mentholated, woody as it should be. It's really superb, just a tad less than the first release.

A direct comparison with HERRline 1 is still pending. From memory, I would say No. 2 is spicier and somewhat less fruity. The esters are a bit more controlled. Also, No. 2 seems sweeter to me than No. 1. On its own, a very tasty drop, with strawberry, menthol, olive, and spice.

05-12-2025 - Rate 8.9 The 2nd. in a line up of 5 different Savanna rums. The first one was a bit off. Taste did not reach the expected level. This one is also a bit off, but I a new and good way. The strawberry chewing gum small and taste brings me back to the candy store as a kid. Nose of strawberry, tropical fruits, ester and wood. Palate follows the nose close. Long finish dominated by strawberry and wood.

24/01/2026: retasted @ Liquid Leuven '26. Gained a few points. 17/09/2025: online Savanna Masterclass by Rhumlicious. This is an intense, estery dram and I love it! This is what Savanna needs to be for me and the only one from the line-up that I would like to have in my collection. Awesome stuff but rather pricy.

On the nose esters, basket of overripe tropical fruit, banana, papaya, mango, passion fruit, cantaloupe, signature artificial strawberry, mint, very aromatic flowers, bubble gum... After longer aeration it reveals light soury notes, young wood. My nose is in paradise once again. The mouth is again very fruity and full of esters, flowery notes seem bit stronger here, light chemical/plastic notes appear and even darker roasted notes and spices. The finnish is medium long with light dry and bittery notes, fruits, mint, wood, light plastic. Once again very complex, balanced, full and juicy top notch Savanna. World is once again a better place :-D I would love to have the first and this second Swell d. S. bottling next to each other for comparison. But I don't so I have to score both the same.

The nose briefly shows a fresh green melon before the typical Savanna esters take over. Combined with tropical fruits, the aroma reminds me of an old strawberry chewing gum, a bit dusty but fascinating. On the palate, the rum impresses with an extremely juicy mouthfeel. The alcohol is well integrated and perfectly carries the fruity intensity. Towards the end, it becomes a bit drier and finishes with a light olive note and spice as well as a distinctive strawberry note. An exciting and well-balanced rum.

First Herr. Quite surprised by this very original nose mixing olive, cocoa, bell pepper, bacon, strawberry but which I find doesn't really work. On the palate, it's not wow either even though quite a lot is going on. This rum has undeniable qualities but it doesn't really convince me. Maybe it's just not for me. Curious to taste other Herr because for now I don't really get the general enthusiasm.

Well, this is HERR. No doubt about it. As soon as the bottle is open, the distinctive HERR smell comes to tease your nostrils. As much aging as HERR can get, it will never give up its DNA. Unaged HERR is typically a bridge too far for me but I enjoyed the HERRLINE OG very much so I was curious about the successor. Tasting confirms that it is a worthy successor albeit a lesser version of the first one. But hey, that one was amazing. It is strawberry galore in the glass, you get them in the nose and in the mouth. There are some other tropical fruits asking for attention but mainly strawberries. It is a well rounded rum but it misses that full bodied intensity of the original. This is a wonderful HERR but it does not blow me away in the way the first one did.

Nose: Fruity and tangy, with notes of banana and tropical fruits, supported by a vanilla woody note bringing structure and roundness. Palate: Powerful and soft at the same time, with a pleasant sweetness, touches of roasted cocoa, a slight woody side, and a fruity return at the end of the mouth.
