Spirit Gallery Port Mourant 2012

"The most chocolatey Port Mourant I've had on the nose," one taster wrote, and the reviews back it up: milk and dark chocolate, praline, roasted hazelnuts, licorice and burnt sugar over the usual Guyana wood and tobacco. The palate runs dry and spicy with pencil shavings, coffee and dried fruit. At 62.9% the heat shows — several felt it drinks a touch young.

The community says
  • Deep chocolate & praline
  • Roasted nuts, licorice
  • Keep in mind: Alcohol reads young

How does Spirit Gallery Port Mourant 2012 taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Chocolate-heavy Guyana pot still, cask strength Loved as a rich, chocolatey Port Mourant that gives a lot for the money. Most call it very good but not revelatory — the alcohol reads a little raw and young.

Spicy Port Mourant Chocolate, licorice, hazelnuts and dark burnt sugar. Very solid but not a revelation. Alcohol well integrated. Nice sipper that you drink on the side.

Fits in with various other 2012 Guyana rums and could definitely be a Diamond blind. Nice aromas of tobacco, dark chocolate, allspice, burnt strong coffee, a bit of peach, and roasted hazelnuts. The alcohol could be a bit better integrated but overall quite tasty.

#6563 28.03.2026 - Part 2 The first online tasting of 2026 of the group we had in Shanghai. Funny that we are now living in different parts of the world again. Singapore, Sweden, UK, Denmark and Thailand 😊 Thanks for the samples Mike. Another rum where you get a lot for your money. The nose is well balanced, naturally sweet and has light wood, caramel, anise, earthy and nutts. The palate is oily and medium intense with light roasted wood, light pencil shavings, caramel, anise and dried fruit. The finish is long and well balanced with light roasted wood, dried fruit, prunes and light chocolate.

Then for a change a good rum. Nice Port Mourant, you get what you expect. It's a very roasted rum, we have dark chocolate and milk chocolate here, also wood and spice.

EDIT: with oxidation much less chocolaty but it remains very good. Truly a great one! The nose is all about chocolate (probably the most chocolaty rum I've smelled), and praline, you might think you're starting a snack with a good spread. On the palate, initially quite soft, butter caramel, woody, dark chocolate, and some fruits, I think of vineyard peach, then the finish leans more towards tobacco, roasted, and spicy. Halfway between Belize and Guyana, if someone told me it was a blend, I wouldn't have been surprised. Big love! Really happy I got my pack.

The profile is characterized by dark chocolate, spices, wood and a little tobacco. The alcohol is present, but only moderately integrated. Overall solid, but without great depth or surprise.

A nice hazelnut note on the first nose. Then a lovely woodiness, licorice, chocolate. Definitely a Guyana profile. On the palate, dark and spicy markers but a nice indulgence brought by chocolate and hazelnut again. Notes of tobacco and burnt. Long finish. Light bitterness. The alcohol is too biting for me, which is a shame because everything else is very well done.

A vibrant, flavorful, and very greedy Port Mourant. The nose is powerful but very indulgent, with very pronounced notes of hazelnut (especially roasted), chocolate, praline, licorice, and spices (chili, cinnamon). Roasted aromas, wood, tobacco, and fruits (dried and red) mingle for an approachable and inviting profile to the nose. Soft, intense, and captivating, just like a Port Mourant.\n\nThe palate reveals again this voluptuous combination of sweetness and darkness but with more bitterness this time. Dark flavors gradually unveil with roasted oak, tobacco, hazelnut, milk chocolate, cinnamon, licorice, then more pronounced notes of caramel and burnt sugar, and dried date. The profile is quite straightforward and not very complex; it lacks that maturity to claim a place among the greats, but it remains a very pleasant cuvée to taste, where the alcohol stays well integrated.\n\nThe finish is brief this time, mainly focused on bitterness brought by coffee, leather, licorice, and dark chocolate, tannins with the wood, and finally the burnt side with darker aromas and some spices. A dry and fleeting finish that lacks character and liveliness, which is a shame because the rest of the profile is more shimmering. A very good Port Mourant, very easy-drinking compared to other profiles of the same kind. The quality/price ratio is very good.

Today I randomly tried a few Port Mourants against each other. RX 24445, RX23926 and RX3534. All are at a good level, although I liked the bottlings from Spirit Gallery and the CDI from 2005 better than the CDI from 2013. But all consistently solid.

The first dying port I appreciate. Kudos to Benjamin for that, because it was quite a challenge! Very indulgent, dark chocolate, praline, a good dose of wood and a "je ne sais quoi" (maybe a touch of eucalyptus) that still brings a certain freshness. Bravo, nice selection.

A nose that takes a few minutes to open up, complex: mint/licorice, woodiness, lots of scent, both dry and indulgent. It's my first dying port, tempting! Palate: dry! Dusty, warm, spices and chili, nuts. 2nd sip: also, juniper! Leather. Finish: rather long! It leans towards coffee and chocolate. It's good! I'll have to come back to it. I think it needs a bit of revisiting before fully appreciating it.

This is an alright PM for me. It drinks a bit too hot and it does not bring anything special to the table. It gives you some or the typical PM markers of course. It benefits from 20 minutes of airing to open up.
