Swell de Spirits T.D.L Ole Bar Tapas Taiwan 2002

Mint and eucalyptus lead the way here — the classic TDL menthol signature, backed by peach, red berries and tea. It's a fresh, fruity 22-year Trinidadian, and at 55.9% the alcohol sits well integrated, never hot. Members like it a lot but keep landing on the same note: pleasant, clean, no off-flavors, yet missing that final spark. A very good pour that stops just short of memorable.

How does Swell de Spirits T.D.L Ole Bar Tapas Taiwan 2002 taste?

Aggregated from 12 community reviews.

Minty, fruity 22yr Trinidad — solid, not electric Consensus is a lovely minty TDL that's solid rather than thrilling — several tasters say the 2003 batches deliver more. No flaws, just no wow.

8,8:On the nose, fresh, minty molasses, flowery, with tea, toasted oak with pastry, caramel, spicy, passion fruit and peaches, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, dried, citrus fruits and berries are out, molasses is candied, vanilla and rubber join. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is fresh with minty, flowery molasses, tea, eucalyptus, grassy, sweet with honey, oily with toasted wood notes like caramel, burnt sugar, smoky, spicy with allspice, slightly salty, fruits are fermented with citrus, peaches, joined by dried fruits. Some medicinal notes might be recognized like rubber, hints of menthol. 8,7:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with smoky, roasted wood notes, spicy, herbaceous, minty molasses, mineral and peaches, berries, menthol, burnt rubber, slightly pungent.

Small TDL (blind) crosstasting, including three representatives from 2002. 1st Rx24532 - Swell for Taiwan 55.9% 2. Rx24534 - TWJ 56.1% 3. Rx23409 - V&M 54,1% For me, the Swell has the most mint on the nose and almost goes in the direction of 2003 TDLs (April Batch). The TWJ is fruitier, has more spices and a subtle mintiness. The V&M is very similar to the TWJ on the nose. I can't go into too much detail here, as the three are already very similar and even more so on the palate than on the nose. Everything you'd expect is there, but for me the 2002 TDLs just don't deliver. To me they feel like 2003 TDLs (the minty ones from the April batch), but with the handbrake on. They're all delicious, but they lack that certain something. Especially in view of the prices. Both the CDI TDL 2003 (Rx1629) and the "TDL light" (New Grove - Fine Spirits) were more convincing in a direct comparison (blind - mind you).

Wonderful TDL with lots of mint and the usual peach. There are also berries and tea on the nose and palate, which harmonize really well. Some spices and a little wood. First-class alcohol integration!

Angostura is famous for a bottle most people never drink neat. The bitters house founded in 1824 became Trinidad's only rum distillery, and its arm Trinidad Distillers makes a clean, column-distilled, Spanish-style rum unlike the heavy funk of Jamaica or Guyana. The same plant still guards the secret recipe for the world's most famous cocktail bitters.
