Tonight, we're talking about the very latest bottling from our local bottler: Bottles & Legends! For those who don't know Bottles & Legends yet, it's a small Belgian outfit founded in August 2020. Since the beginning, they offer classic spirit bottlings, but also some spiced rums and a gin, all made in collaboration with as many local players as possible. To date, the house has about fifteen bottlings to its name, including two old rums, a Bas-Armagnac, and several whiskies – Belgian, Scottish, and Irish. Notably, a nice first in the Belgian scene: the creation of the very first 100% Belgian blended malt, made by them from single malts from two local distilleries. Whenever possible, the processing, bottling, and labeling steps are done on site, by hand. But let's get to this little latest... About a year ago, the team discovered this rum, somewhat by chance, while they went to pick up a whisky barrel at E&A Scheer. At the time, neither the budget nor the idea of a new bottling was on the table. Luck had it that the broker, busy with a big distillery project, hadn't yet found a buyer for this barrel. Receiving a list of available lots – composed only of whiskies and this rum – they remembered the tasting done with Didier and asked for a sample again. On paper, this rum had something to seduce: almost 11 years old, including 5 spent in Jamaica, and especially an aging entirely in its original barrel, a freshly emptied ex-Heaven Hill. At tasting, they immediately found that typical Jamaican profile, without going full ester – which made it more accessible to the palate. The barrel proof showed 66%, a bit too intense at the first sip, hence the idea of a controlled reduction to preserve the aromatic while offering better balance. Result: a powerful, expressive rum, but respectful to the taster. 137 bottles were bottled in the Netherlands; the rest of the barrel is still available for sale at E&A Scheer. The et
