Hampden S.B.S Jamaica (9. German Rum Festival) DOK 2018

People already hooked on high-ester Hampden are the audience here. It's a DOK bomb — nail polish, glue, overripe pineapple and pear, with light wood and pepper from the young cask. The PX sherry barely shows beyond the color; the esters swallow it. Oily, intense, dry-dusty finish that lingers long. One taster flat-out said it's "not for beginners."

The community says
  • Massive ester fruit
  • Long dry finish
  • Less suitable for: Beginners and anyone put off by glue and solvent notes

How does Hampden S.B.S Jamaica (9. German Rum Festival) DOK 2018 taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Wild, high-ester DOK Hampden bomb Most call it a textbook ester bomb — wildly fruity and funky with a long dry finish. A few feel the PX sherry gets lost, and one wasn't won over by the glue-heavy profile.

Considering the price tag at release this is a very nice rum. From opening the bottle you get the ester and fruits and once rested the flavours just sneak across the table. Intense, fruity with nice ester and glue notes, light wood with spices. In the empty glass i can pick up faint chocolate notes. Oily on the palate and it draws really nice curtains in the glass.

Unfortunately, the SBS Hampden is not my thing. Varnish, glue and butter dominate. In the background fermented fruits and marzipan. It remains good and thus under 80 points.

Nice Hampden, I find solvent and glue here only very, very slightly present. Besides the ester, for me a small fruit bomb, lots of pineapple and banana, which come fermented and overripe. Very tasty.

For its young age an excellent rum... it offers everything you expect from a Jamaican with this mark! Top!!

Considering the short aging time, a really good Hampden where the value for money just fits. Lots of tropical fruits and varnish. Also light marzipan, some spices and very subtle wood. Overall quite dry neat, but really great in a Mai Tai!

These sherry finished Jamaicans are not worlds apart, but I dig it. In this one, the sherry influence is somewhat less, according to my impression. In the mouth it comes across a bit spicier, the wood influence is well noticeable despite the young age. For me a little weaker than the comparable newer bottlings with lower mark

Time to review anything "German" before the Rumfestival in Berlin. Let this rum sit in the glass and the taste profile opens up better after a few sips. On the nose: OK, i can instantly tell that this is sherrycask matured rum and its from Jamaica. Ester and glue at front with overripe fruity notes. Taste: At first sip i got just a little bit fruity notes from the sherry cask and then mainly spicy, very peppery and sour mouthfell, But after a few sips it toned down back to lovely overripe fruit palate with a nice sherry cask influence. The alcohol is integrated smootly. Finish: Long finish. Dry. Roasted. Little bit of spices. Sweetness from the fruits. Delicious. This rum didn't impress me on the first sip, but after a while it got better and better. Good fruity palate and I really liked the finish on this one. This might be the best sherry cask rum that i have tasted so far .

the PX Sherry Cask maturation is initially only noticeable in the color, the fat esters set the tone, but after a while in the glass also come red fruits and spicy notes, more then still on the palate, with a toasty finish. So really can pick me up the combination then but somehow not...

Only the second time I’ve tasted a DOK as far as I know. Not for beginners, that’s for sure. A lot of acidic and chemical notes from start to finish (nail polish, aceton, etc.). The dry but still smooth sensation in the finish is something special. I do like it though.

A somewhat older DOK bottling with a short barrel aging as a sample in the glass. Honey-yellow color. On the nose, you can smell it throughout the room as soon as you pour some into the glass. First, massive overripe fruit notes, then complemented by glue. The ABV is barely noticeable on the nose. Everything is dominated by the fruit. On the palate, the first sip brings a slight acidity attack, which quickly disappears with the next small sips. Along with the fruit notes come marzipan and a slight woodiness. The long finish is all about the palate aromas. Some spiciness comes in. I'm not really a big DOK fanboy, but this one grows on me the longer it stays in the glass. I'll try it in a Mai Tai right away.

I love this rum. Its scent quickly fills half the room. Very fruity and funky. The sherry notes are subtle in the background.

An ester bomb straight out of the picture book. Best alone or at the end of a tasting because the (very good) aftertaste lasts very long and overwhelms everything that follows. What also works super well is to upgrade a Mai Tai with a milder rum by adding 1 cl of this one.

Successful, but doesn't come close to the predecessor with the small PX cask.

Color: Pale gold Smell: Very tasty, fruity and sweet. Right after pouring, fruity esters fill the room immediately, especially pineapple aromas. Very intense - esters without end - both fruit (pineapple, pear, quince, a hint of banana) and solvent esters. Also some whipped sweet cream. Needs to stand for a longer time and then opens up more and more. Taste: Very tasty, fruity and spicy. Initially sweet and fruity in the mouth. Then follows a flavor explosion when swallowing. I perceive a lot of pineapple and pear. Sweetish, then in the second wave of flavor also very spicy. Finish: Very long and warming, still very fruity but also spicy. Becomes increasingly dry and dusty. The aftertaste is dry-fruity. Conclusion: A really very tasty and typically funky Jamaica rum. Young, wild and untamed. Honestly, apart from a slight coloring, I noticed nothing from the PX-Sherry Cask. The PX-Sherry aromas got completely lost in the flood of ester aromas. 88 points

First sweet, then sour. Extremely fermented fruity, ester-heavy.
