Planteray Hogo Monsta (Extra High Ester Rum) 2025
Most tasters land somewhere between "wild fun" and "too much" — and a couple genuinely hated it. At 2029 g/hL of esters, expect glue, nail polish and solvent up front, then overripe banana, pineapple and mango with a hint of marzipan underneath. Several call it Barbados doing a Jamaican DOK impression. The 56.6% sits surprisingly soft, but the finish runs short for all that intensity.

Finally got the Hogo Monsta in my hands today and poured it straight into the glass. Immediately, a load of esters fills the room. It instantly brings associations to Jamaica. Only this is a rum from Barbados... the nose is almost identical to a C<>H, HGML. On the palate, funk, esters, marzipan, young wood, and light tannins. It fits together exceptionally well. The ABV allows for easy sipping and I find it perfectly reduced. The only downside is the relatively short finish, which is a bit surprising given the high ester content. That keeps it from getting a higher rating.

Un rhum dégusté au Whisky Live à Paris en 2025. Un nez d’esters extrêmes, de la colle, du verni à ongles. En bouche les esters sont bien présents aussi, une bouche ultra sèche mais avec une petite douceur. Des fruits tropicaux trop mûrs mais aussi des fruits rouges. La finale est très courte, mais les arômes qui restent ensuite en bouche sont délicieux une fois les esters évaporés. L’expérience d’un rhum extrême.

Dégustation (rapide) du Planteray Hogo Monsta De passage rapide au V and B Sallanches (que je conseille vivement pour son choix), le patron (un vrai passionné de rhum) a eu la gentillesse de me faire goûter ce monstre d'ester (2029g/hL AA). A l'ouverture, on sent les arômes à 4 mètres (sans exagération). Beaucoup de caramel au beurre salé, de la colle, du solvant, et on craint que le papier peint se décolle. De l'ananas pourri, de la mangue suintante qui a été oubliée dans le panier à fruit. Ça pue grave ! On s'arme de courage pour boire ce qui s'annonce comme un défi de jeu à boire. En bouche, on se demande si on ne boit pas un produit impropre à la santé (oui forcément c'est de l'alcool, 56.6%). Mais c'est surtout que ça goûte à fond les produits chimiques déjà énoncés : vernis à ongles, colle à papier peint, solvant. C'est explosif, extrême. Impossible de prendre du plaisir mais c'est quand même une curiosité de tremper ses lèvres dans un liquide aussi original. Les fruits pourris sont bien là. La longueur en bouche dure des heures. Je pense que je vais encore le roter au petit déj demain matin. Je ne peux pas mettre une bonne note à ce rhum totalement "ormi" (objet rhum non-identifié). C'est juste pour le fun d'où la bouteille de 20cl. Plus un agrément à cocktail ou une curiosité pour amateurs de boissons extrêmes

#5892 25.10 2025 Tasted at the Whisky & Rom Festival in Copenhagen 2025. This is a lighter release than the previous one. Still very fruity with nice esters and a natural sweetness. The palate is oily, fruity and sweet with a medium long finish.

The nose is alright, kind of creamy vanilla. Smells like high ester Long Pond a bit. On the palate stuff starts out ok, but there's an enormous, mainly rancid note that quickly overpowers the rum and utterly dominates the finish. I thought this rum was revolting, and I'm generally a fan of funky rums.

Eine solche Wucht an Estern, dass man abgesehen von Nagellack, Klebstoff, Tropischen Früchten und Zuckersirup quasi keine anderen Aromen schmecken kann. Alkohol super eingebunden, aber scheinbar verdünnt.

Hogo Monsta 2025. 2024 unverdünnt fand ich aber noch deutlich geiler 😆 aber trotzdem eine krasse Erfahrung, insgesamt aber relativ wenig facettenreich und primär fruchtig und esterig. Sämtliche anderen Aromen die ein Vergleichbarer Hampden DOK etc hat fehlen hier.

Hogo Mosta trifft es gut, wirklich richtig power in der Nase. Schon sehr geil, viel Ester und Frucht. Geschmacklich muss ich sagen war die Probe 2024 deutlich intensiver und Facettenreicher was das Säurespiel und Fruchtigkeit angeht. Daher bin ich ein wenig enttäuscht, aber ist dennoch ein cooler Stoff. Nachverkostung mit 4 Wochen geöffneter Flasche, viel zugänglicher geworden. Super Sipper

Ist der erste Antritt noch ganz lecker haut es einen schnell viel Klebstoff in die Nase. Tropische Frucht ist im Hintergrund wahrzunehmen. Geschmacklich Viel Ester und tropische Frucht. Pur gut trinkbar, im Cocktail werde ich sicher Mal einen Barlöffel hinzufügen und probieren welche Wirkung es hat. Unter dem Strich einfach schön das West Indies und Ferrand den Mut hatten es in kleinen Flaschen auf den Markt zu bringen.

Eeester!! Der Name und das Monster auf dem Etikett sind schon in der Nase Programm. Hereliches High Ester Rum, der viel Spaß macht. Nicht sonderlich komplex, was für sein Alter nicht verwunderlich ist. Etwas unrund im Abgang. Ein sehr guter Rum verheissungsvoller Rum!

Ich bin etwas enttäuscht… Ich habe angenommen, dass das der gleiche Stoff wäre der RX19267, welcher uns bei der Planteray RumX-Verkostung präsentiert wurde. Ich war damals Rech begeistert, insbesondere wegen der Fruchtigkeit und der Säure. An dem Hogo Monster vermisse ich beides. Keine Säure, wenig Frucht, dafür pflanzliche Noten und Olive. Nicht uninteressant, aber nicht das was ich erhofft hatte.

Ein Estergehalt von über 2000 Gramm pro Hektoliter ist natürlich ein absolutes Extrem. Die Aromatik ist entsprechend stark definiert durch Zitrus- und Tropenfrüchte sowie Nagellack und Klebstoff. Das muss man mögen, wenngleich die Reduktion auf knapp 57% Alkohol durchaus stimmig wirkt. Intensiv, fordernd, aber für Liebhaber des High Ester-Stils definitiv lohnend.

Ich hatte mir hier etwas knalligeres vorgestellt, wurde aber leider enttäuscht. Nach der Plantery Masterclass von RumX damals und dem dortigen High Ester Monster, ist dieser schon um einiges entfernt. Hatte auf den BumBumEisEster Kick gewartet. Aber alles in allem ein solider Mixer.

Parmi les attractions du stand Planteray (une myriade de quilles disponibles), le Hogo Monsta, sauce secrète de la WIRD était la pour nous assouplir le palais (ou l'exploser, chacun le voit comme il veut). Personnellement gouté 3 fois, et à chaque fois je l'ai trouvé énorme, mais abordable. C'est quand même une dinguerie de 2000 esters, bourrées de fruits trop murs, de solvants, mais si "douce" en bouche. En Daiquiri, énorme évidemment, l'objet n'est pas de le boire sec, même si l'expérience est agréable.

The nose, as expected, esters with light fruity notes. Very powerful on the palate and immediately full of esters. But then it remains surprisingly one-dimensional and the finish is also surprisingly short.

Un des profils les plus extrêmes et loufoques que la Barbade a pu produire. le nez est envahi par les notes chimiques des esters, de la colle, du vernis à ongles et des solvants. On distingue tout de même des fruits tropicaux ultra mûrs (banane, ananas) et une douceur inattendue sur le massepain. Un nez extrêmement funky et concentré mais étonnamment doux, qui traduit toute l’extravagance du profil. La radicalité est de mise également en bouche : le profil devient ultra sec, asphyxié par les saveurs esterisées et médicinales, mais conserve une douceur dans les arômes ultra délicate, notamment avec le massepain, les fruits tropicaux (ananas, banane, mangue) et les fruits rouges. Intense, crémeux et funky, c’est un profil qui se boit relativement facilement, avec une très bonne intégration de l’alcool. La finale manque un peu de vie et reste sur son registre fermé des notes phénoliques, tanniques et des fruits trop mûrs. Le caramel et un soupçon de bois donnent un peu de rondeur à ces tonalités très lourdes et esterisées. Un rhum intéressant pour montrer que la Barbade en a sous la ceinture et qui devrait bien s’accommoder en mixologie.

08-11-2025 - Rate 8.0 Fun experiment from Planteray. Have not tasted high ester WIRD or Barbados before. Wonder what a Hampden at 2.000 g/hL Nose and palate are dominated by ester, glue, nail polish and tropical fruits. Medium finish also dominated bye glue and nail polish. 09-01-2026 - Rate 7.6

Kräftiger, esterbetonter Barbados Rum mit markantem Profil. In der Nase intensive vergorene Frucht, Klebstoff, Banane und eine deutliche Funk Note, wie man sie sonst eher aus Jamaica kennt. Am Gaumen energisch, würzig und fruchtgeladen mit Anklängen von Tropenfrucht, Vanille und einer leicht medizinischen Kante. Die 56.6 % tragen das Aroma gut, dennoch merkt man, dass die Verdünnung minimal Komplexität wegnimmt – dies im Vergleich zur fassstarken Variante, die wir bei einem RX Planteray Tasting probieren konnten und die etwas mehr Ausdruck zeigte. Insgesamt ein spannender, wilder Hogo Monsta.

Der Planteray Hogo Monsta ist weniger ein klassischer Rum zum gemütlichen Genießen, sondern vielmehr ein Experiment der extremen Aromenkonzentration – eine moderne Interpretation der historischen „high ester / hogo“‑Rums. Er zeigt die „wilde“ Seite tropischer Pot‑Still‑Destillate, wobei seine Intensität sowohl Laien als auch traditionelle Genießer herausfordern kann. Mit Bedacht eingesetzt verleiht er Cocktails enorme Tiefe und Funk‑Charakter; pur genossen hingegen ist er ein Erlebnis, das nur in kleinen Schlucken funktioniert.

Die Nase ist nahezu identisch mit einem Hampden auf Hgml Niveau. Mega viel Klebstoff und Nagellack. Auch im Mund geht die Party weiter. Die Verdünung steht ihm insgesamt ganz gut. Ich glaube ich bräuchte den nicht in Fasstärke. Der Abgang ist in Anbetracht dei Intensität im Mund relativ flüchtig, schade.
