Planteray Mister Fogg Navy Rum (No. 2) 2025
Opinions land all over the place here. Most tasters find a warm, fruity everyday pour — tropical fruit, caramel, citrus and spice, with a touch of smoke and young wood at 55.7%. A few call it unbalanced or a bit artificial, pinning the Mauritius portion for pulling it off-kilter. Several say it's more of a "rhum de tous les jours" than a serious Navy blend, but genuinely fun for the money.

Very decent Navy blend! Well-integrated alcohol. A touch too sweet. But really recommendable for the price-enjoyment ratio and a good introduction to Navy blends! Easy sipper!!!!!!!!!!

EDIT: Lille rum club. More balanced and darker than I remember! I talked about it in my article about my visit to Maison Ferrand's Barge 166. After a second tasting... I’m telling you, at 49€ retail price, this is definitely a bottle you need! (link to the previous article). On the nose, lovely notes of coconut, pineapple, dried fruits, spices, and caramel. On the palate, a round and full texture that reminded me of a little crepe batter like my grandmother used to make. The palate follows the nose well, with some additional herbal notes, cocoa bean, and orange. It’s a daily sipper, warm and complete!

#1711 16-01-2026 - Rate 5.8 Where to start? Have tasted less Plantation(Planteray) rums the last years. Some of the extreme series were good but to few I liked. This one was a gamble, that didn’t pay out. Won’t go in to too much details but it’s a mix that goes in to many different directions. And a bitter taste. Not for me
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
I like this one better than the old one, less sweet and a bit spicier and fruitier. The alcohol is well integrated and overall it's a well-rounded thing. For a navy rum, though, I would prefer it to taste more like Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad.

#6973 29.06.2026 Spient a few hours in hospital today because I didn't feel too well. Time to do some spitting while listening to some nice trance tracks on Spotify. A pretty decent rum with a good price tag and less sugar than usual. Rum with nice fruits, chocolate, caramel, light roasted wood and spices.

Trade fair review. Quite okay but not comparable to the awesome Navy Blends - neither in terms of the composition of the rums nor with the classic markers of the three well-known islands. Definitely not bad for drinkers of sweetened rums

Hanse Spirit Hamburg February 2026. Then I hit the Ferrand stand 3 more times. First the Navy Rum. Personally, I find it too alcoholic. Otherwise, dried fruits and citrus fruits, but also a lot of spice.

Tasted once at the Paris Rumfest and a second time in a Navy's lineup. Overall, it's pleasant, a good classic approach to Navy's. The nose has Jamaican and spices. The palate is more of a whole, it drinks easily without fuss.
Review by F.L.O.
Very interesting and compared to the N1 a bit more pleasing. Definitely a nice rum tasting companion for anyone who wants to try a piece of history. Even if only experimental...

You really get a lot for your money. I'm very positively surprised. I like it very much. It also has sufficient complexity.
Review by Vincent D
Tasted at the Rhum Fest Paris 2026. A Navy to introduce the Navy style. Not very complex but a rather nice balance. No Caroni in this one, but you find dark notes that complement the fruits and the vegetal side. Well made.

Tried at Whisky & more 2026 in Hattingen For 40€, you can't really expect a full-fledged, traditional Navy Blend, but it should capture a bit of the character. You can easily drink it on the side.
Review by Wernie

After reading "The Rum Never Sets" I was somewhat torn. The told story of Navy Rum is instructive. The last section then describes the production of a Navy Rum based on it with a reconstruction of the original Navy Dock Blending Apparatus. Basically, the book is a well-founded brochure advertising this Navy Rum. You have to take your hat off to this dedication. Accordingly, I got the rum. Compared to others, the Mauritius influence is probably a bit too dominant. You would think it was a Grand Arome. Not my preference. But I could imagine that as a sailor I would have enjoyed the alcoholic freshness on deck. Still not my favorite Navy. Deptford Dockyard is leagues better. Black Tot without question. Verlier Navy and Ricci also allow you to differentiate and enjoy the individual parts. From a historical interest, a great project. Drinkable, but I find it a pity that the other contributions are not so well tasted out :-( The differential tasting I find the most interesting with Navy Rums.

Surprisingly good blend! Great value for money!

Trade fair purchase Hansespirit On the nose, spices of all kinds dominate, along with some salt and dark chocolate. There's also a hint of some unidentified fruit. The latter bothers me a bit and seems to throw the blend slightly out of balance. Probably (too young) Hampden. The Hampden comes through strongly on the palate and brings quite a bit of acidity to the tongue. Overall, I remembered this rum better than I like it now. I think some of it will also work in a cocktail.

1st taste: Nose is very fruity full of tropical fruits such as kiwi, banana or orange. You get sweet kinda candy feel of the overall aroma with spicy tones complementing the overall feeling. 1st impression of the palate is that I am tasting something very familiar. Oh right it resembles the Rammstein rum blend. Jamaican and Guayanese portion of the blend is very prominent in here, the Trinidad gives ,, a punch,, Barbados rounds it very well and Mauritius enhances the overall taste. It's very fruity and spicy overall and the sweetness is just nicely balanced with all mentioned elements. If you are interested in detailed breakdown of the flavor check out my sensoric notes. After first try I must say that I am very pleased. For it's price you are getting a really good navy rum that is however a little on the sweeter side. Whether that is good or bad is up to you and your personal preferences.

Visit at Planteray This year, no exclusive bottling at the booth, unlike previous editions. So I settled for two 2025 releases: Black Cask 2025 (Barbados & Trinidad) – 40% A blend way too sweet and a bit flat for passionate palates. But it remains soft, pleasant, and accessible, with a fair price for those discovering rum. Navy Mister Fogg 2025 - 55.7% On this second batch, the artificial note that bothered me before has disappeared. This 2025 version is fruitier, slightly spicy, and much more balanced. A nice rum, affordable and easy to taste.

Far from a navy rum but nonetheless quite good. I get sweet, candied citruses and sweet spices on the nose. On the palate sweetness with darker and roasted notes. The nose excites me, the taste not so much.

Nice qpr. Fruity, spicy and a little sweet. Alcohol burn. Will probably use more as a mixer than a sipper.
Review by Pandemonia
As I recall this made a hell of a Mai Tai but I was a bit let down as a sipper. For my inexperienced palate it is too strong, sharp, woody, peppery and burnt hot. Some spice in the rear but completely dominated by the fiery strength. However first time I've tasted leather and that was better than I would've thought. Long, hot burnt finish in the same vein. This put a fire in my belly and at this very tasting I was not prepared for it. Maybe it will fare better for me another time. That said, I strongly get the impression the rum is still solid, it is strong but complex. Powerful and very dominant in a specific direction. Not convinced it is balanced well. I will keep using it as a mixer but will try to sip it more in future to get used to it. Maybe this one is better sipped after one already has had something to drink and not as the first sip of the day as was the case here.

The No. 2 (2025) is a powerful Navy blend from five origins: Trinidad (35%), Barbados (34%), Guyana (20%), Mauritius (6%), and Jamaica (5%). Besides molasses rums, it also contains a small portion of sugarcane juice rum from Mauritius. The Planteray Navy Rum No. 2 is a hefty, multi-layered Navy blend with surprisingly good integration of its 55.7%. Dark fruits, caramel, and chocolate meet roasted pineapple, spices, and strong molasses. On the palate full, slightly sweetish and increasingly bitter, with smoke and oak as counterpoints. The long, warm finish brings jam, spices, and roasted aromas. Powerful, complex, yet accessible.

Have very much enjoyed this rum. It’s very well made. A touch on the sweeter side with notes of chocolate, caramel, vanilla, but it’s balanced out with some herbal notes and tobacco, finishes with a slight amount of that Jamaican funk of tropical fruits with maybe a touch of young wood and varnish. It’s a really interesting, fun pour. Incredible value.
Review by Dave Dahlgren
Sweet, pleasant, a bit stronger with warmth, fruitiness, caramel, wood. Batch number 1, not the 2nd.
Review by Carsten
A bit spirited, a bit nutty. But okay, improves with a little rest.

Gourmandise and Barbados attack. Jam very present.
Review by Antoine BOTTON
An expressive and indulgent Navy Rum, faithful to the spirit of historic blends. The nose oscillates between ripe fruits, molasses, spices and a slight smoky touch. On the palate, the balance is there: breadth, roundness and real aromatic depth without heaviness. The finish elegantly prolongs the spices and woody notes. A rum that makes even more sense when reading books dedicated to Navy Rums, as it fits perfectly into this maritime and historical tradition.
Review by Vinsdorf
At first impression, it’s pretty bad. Artificial cinnamon and sweetness. But over time, it’s not that bad after all. Fair enough. I understand the goal was to reproduce the history, not to create the best possible blend.
Review by Jacques etdom
Nothing on the nose, hardly more expressive on the palate. An insignificant rum.
