What surprises people more is how well the spirit and cask already mesh at five years old. The palate goes wild: fermented funk, chili spice, tar, salinity, an endless numbing finish. Not for the faint hearted 😂. This is very different to any other rum I’ve tried. It distinctly smells and tastes like strawberry laces (sweets). Beneath this surface are other fruit notes like pineapple and a briny salty aspect. This is not a session rum and perhaps not even enjoyable on the first few tastings because it is so odd. But slowly it grows on you and it is actually pretty delicious (when you’re in the mood to assault your senses). I’m glad to have a back-up bottle.

On the nose this is all bubblegum and esters. There’s more but those two dominate so much that it’s almost a disservice to speak of anything beyond them. That said, there is saltiness/brine and solvents behind that bubblegum ester. On the palate this is intense, wild, fermented funk. It’s briny and it’s zesty, salty and spicy. This explosive rum is untamed. I understand that many will love this. To me, at most, it is interesting. I would have been better served with a sample. Rums like this simply scream ‘unrefined’. There is a big trend for high ester, wildness these days - they are labeled as ‘unique’ and then score exceptionally high. I, personally, think this is a bit of a stretch. It’s conflating interesting with great - once that newness wears off, will you really be reaching for a dram of rums like this with any regularity? Can you honestly say it is just as good as other more balanced options? I understand this intensity is intentional and to each their own. I for one can’t embrace the hype train. To me this one is fun, it’s unique but it just ain’t great.

Huge canned pineapple smell on the nose. Fills up the rum after I poured it. Maybe a little cherry cough syrup. Pours super pale golden. Taste is even more powerful than the smell. Pineapple marmalade and chili powder. Wild experience these HERRs. Not sure yet I'm totally onboard but I can see the appeal. Sample thanks to xamsx.

Definitely a unique flavour. Most accurate description is a white freezie in Canada but for those not in the north it’s a creamsicle flavour. The esters bubble throughout the mouth and this has such a punch of flavour but at the same time drinks below its ABV that it provides something different than anyone expects. Tons of tropical fruit, bubblegum, some spice and iodine notes. Delightful!

I was expecting your typical strawberries and funk but this does something else at such a young age - the spirit and cask meld incredibly well so early. The depth is there and the price is incredible. Just something you can continue to come back to but this isn’t going to be for everyone if you don’t like typical HERR.

First Savanna rum and my first HERR. After my initial tasting, I was convinced I'd made a mistake in buying the bottle; the intensity of the famous bubblegum flavour was shocking. The strength of this thing almost traumatising. However, coming back to it in a more levelled state of mind, I do think this is a fantastic and unique rum. The nose is strong with sweet tinned pineapple and a funk that is truly room filling. The palate is a real journey - bubblegum, fermented products, very medicinal, chilli spice, curry, coriander, strawberry, foamy banana sweets. As it evolves there is tar and salinity, the pineapple returns. The mouth presence is massive, numbing (from the high abv) and finish is very long. The aftertaste stays with you for hours. After being initially intimidated by this rum, it could become one of my favourites...
