8,1:On the nose, sugarcane, mineral, pungent with cheese, vegetal with mushrooms, fresh, grassy, flowery with geranium, sweet with honey, nutty, fruity with citrus fruits. On aeration, the cane is earthy, perfumed, lavender is out, dairy and yeast hints arise, some pineapple and spicy touch. 8:On the palate, the attack is oily with dairy, fresh with grassy sugarcane, flowery, herbaceous, vegetal with mushrooms, spicy with pepper, meaty, smoky with bacon, sweet with honey, the fruits are citrus with lemon, lemon peel, tropical with pineapple and dried. 7,8:The finish is medium long, as sugarcane is grassy, green, herbaceous, flowery with lavender, mineral, spicy with black pepper, smoky, buttery, fruity with citrus fruits. Tasted in a sample twice to enjoy the oxidation. The nose pleases me a lot, it's very agricole with a little extra hazelnut butter. The palate is quite lively at first, also agricole, oily texture and we lose the hazelnut butter side. Finish too short, which surprises me with this alcohol degree. Something I had already noticed with the Madilao.

My first Laos rum. More reminiscent of grappa or fruit brandy, alcohol is relatively well integrated. I urgently need to try this super exciting aroma in a daiquiri. Beautiful fruity and herbal notes. In the daiquiri it's a little too grassy and not fruity enough for me personally. All in all, however, an exciting newcomer from Laos.

#5620 31.08.2025 Retasting at the German Rum Fest 2025. This one is also very fresh and fruity. Nice citrus and sugarcane in the profile and light spicy to the palate. There is a nice light vegetal note in the profile. Price to quality is pretty good in my mind.

The nose is very intense. Sweetish, fresh buttery cream, floral and herbal aromas flow incessantly from the glass. On the palate, a heavy sweetness of sugar cane at first, followed by fresh planty aromas. It spreads oilily. The finish is accompanied by a slightly bitter, artificial note

All the attributes of an agricole in this very vegetal Laotian rum. Herbal, sugarcane and citrus on the nose. Same thing on the palate with a very spicy and zesty side. Finish with a mineral touch. Nice but a bit too intense for my palate.

My first rum from Laos. For an unaged rum a positive surprise with lots of earthy and vegetal notes. Lemon and light tropical fruits are present in nose and palate. Alcohol very well integrated.

Thanks to Rodolphe for the split. I finally got around to trying this. Laos is rather a country not necessarily known for its rum. But I don't find it that bad. Although I would rather use this as a mixer than enjoy it neat.

A quite classical sugarcane juice white rum, with a nice citrus acidity and some vegetal notes. Alcohol is very well integrated. It's not groundbreaking but it's still a good value for the money, worth checking.

Verdict: I like spirits with their own profile and here we have a good example. Sympathetic, cane juice forward, green, a bit earthy, citric, but with a distinct buttery note. Probably nice when you age this rum, but for this spirit, maybe just a bit over the edge for me. 80 points. Nose: sugar and sugarcane, grass, edamame, butter, slightly rancid. Then mashed papaya, and ink. Palate: oily, but also still buttery. Sugar cane forward, then grass, banana leaf, herbs, a bit of lemon zest. Finish: moderate, well integrated alcohol, just a bit of pepper, and still lingering on cane juice, sugarcane, vegetal notes, lemon zest, oil, and butter.

Interesting debut for rum from Laos, at least I had neither the country nor the distillery on my radar before. You can expect a relatively typical profile for white sugar cane distillate with some sweetness, herbal notes and citrus aromas. Possibly a great promise for the future.

👃🏼 = a frankly vegetal and lemony bouquet, pineapple and an earthy note. 👄 = the juice is a bit oily, a bit smoky and the alcohol content does not go unnoticed until the rather mineral and peppery finish. With Vagabond Spirits, which lives up to its name, immediate takeoff to Southeast Asia for a white rum that is better not drunk neat 😋

Nice surprise from Laos. Sweet, fruity (citrus fruits), grassy, floral. The alcohol is very well integrated and pleasantly warm. Reminds me of Chalong Bay from Thailand. I have to try the rest of the sample in a small Ti-Punch.

08/03/2026: Brussels Rhum Festival @ Tour & Taxis. Very clean, grassy and fresh spirit. You can definitely taste the quality, but I wouldn't grab this on a daily basis. Nice to try but don't need a full bottle. This was my first time encountering something from Vagabond Spirits, and it's a very interesting bottler.

Read full review ›Superb 'agricole' nose from the Caribbean... while we are not there at all 🙂 Honestly, blindfolded you clearly hit on a rum from Guadeloupe, near Longueteau I think. Quite a lot of fruit, candied pineapple, dried mangoes, lime with a very nice minerality, a slightly earthy touch, a vegetal side with fresh cane juice and above all, no iodine trace like some agricole rums distilled in pot stills can give. The 64% ABV is quite soft on the nose, this rum has a borderline buttery side with fine touches of caramel, a real candy. Palate The 64% is logically more noticeable, but without causing any problem. It's always very gourmand, buttery, light caramel, fruity with mango, lime and pineapple and obviously a very rich cane. The finish leaves us a nice minerality, quite a lot of fat still and very slightly smoky or spicy aromas with pepper... and still no traces of olives/iodine/metallic... top!
