Here's the surprise: after 41 years in the cask this Hampden still smells fresh and fruity, with barely any alcohol showing at 55%. Overripe tropical fruit, banana, pineapple, marzipan and that classic ester-and-nail-polish funk. The palate shows more wood and a musty, slightly peaty edge — a few tasters felt it sits just past its peak, but the finish stays long and fruity.

Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr Düsseldorf April 2026. Took it as a sample. The last fair rum, a strong one. Again typical Hampden, (overripe) tropical fruits and esters, but on the palate also slightly musty, still tasty.

German rum Festival Berlin 2025. A nose of powerful esters but nicely softened by the patina of time. Overripe tropical fruits, banana, and pineapple. Some smokiness, fermentation, and old varnished wood. The first palate has more overripe and acidic fruits than esters. A bit of firmness and old wood. Then everything softens, balances out, and becomes quite delicious. The finish, splendid and balanced, lingers for a long time with fruits and supporting wood. Surprisingly fresh after all this time.

Nose: I'm always amazed at how little the age affects this continentally aged Hampden. The nose is still fresh and fruity even after over 40 years! The other typical markers like marzipan, grilled pineapple, and acacia honey are there too. You can't feel any alcohol on the nose. Palate: clearly more cask influence than the nose suggests! This brings a slight peat/smoke/medicinal note. Towards the finish, the typical brine/green olive comes back. Finish: long and intense, slightly bitter Great rum! Exceptionally well-integrated alcohol, slight shift of the profile towards cask and smoke. If you get the chance, you should try this rum. Buying it is out of the question for me at that price. Addendum: I increased it by 0.2 because after about 30 minutes the rum opens up again and delivers an extremely rounded tasting experience!

#5628 04.09.2025 Enjoying a few samples after a hard day at work. Nose Fresh, intense, fruity, overripe, ester, light smoke, light glue, citrus, light cinnamon. Palate Light wood, light smoke, naturally sweet, esters, fruity, banana, light chocolate, faint peat, spice. Finish Medium to long, naturally sweet, light wood, light smoke, faint peat, light citrus Empty glass Light chocolate, light caramel, fruits, light smoke, light sour. German Rum Fest 2025 sample.

Incredibly cool 83 Hampden! Continental aging at its best. Tropical fruits, esters, bacon, roasted nuts and lots and lots of delicious overripe tropical fruits. Incredibly creamy and delicious. I really like it!

I'm still torn about how to feel about this bottling. The nose actually promises a lot, but on the palate I do find a bit of wood/barrel or a certain mustiness that's a bit too much. Same goes for the price.

Someone has to do it. A comment like this from one of the bottlers of this old gem... ahhh I mean Hampden. Great aroma profile. Esters, marzipan, pineapple, all there. The wood is present but doesn’t bother. On the palate, it’s noticeably stronger. On the first sip, I got a bit of peat, a slight mustiness is noticeable but it’s not overpowering. The typical flavor profile of a long-aged Hampden remains. I even got a chewing gum note, never had that with Hampden before. Maybe overall a bit past its peak but Old continentally aged Hampden hasn’t lost any of its charm 👍

Trade fair rating: Glad to have tasted it in the CoR Masterclass. It's a great Hampden bottling that can certainly be compared with Hampdens from the 90s, but the price-performance ratio fails already at the trade fair price. In the end, it's only for connoisseurs.

Lots of intensity and funk despite the long time in the cask. As for other 1983 Hampden bottlings, this combination of high ester levels and long continental aging is superb and very much to my liking. For this particular one, I think it is a bit over its peak. The finish shows quite a bit of musty wood notes, which overpower the lingering fruit notes.

Trade fair review GRF 2025 Great Hampden. Ester fireworks. Marzipan, banana, tropical fruits and lacquer. At the back of the palate astringent. Really fun and for me worlds better than the presented Caroni.

30-08-2025 - Rate 9.2 German Rum Festival How often does one get the chance to taste 41 year old Hampden? Of cause we had to try this one as well. Would have expected more wood in nose and taste, but it does not dominate. Nose with notes of tropical fruit, glue, nail polish and ester. Palate also with nail polish, glue and tropical fruit. Long finish with ester, glue and a hint of wood.

Really, really beautiful old Hampden. Not exactly cheap, but a dream in terms of funk, ester fruit. Surprisingly fresh for its age. A huge amount of fun in the glass. Long presence in the finish. Maybe 0.1 points too high in the euphoria, but it deserves that to balance out the low ratings.
