Whisky Fair Rhein-Ruhr Düsseldorf April 2026. Took it as a sample. Interesting experiment, Caroni with a Hampden finish. You can definitely recognize both, on one hand the dirty Caroni thanks to tar and rubber, on the other hand Hampden thanks to tropical fruits and esters.

Honestly, this 98 Caroni didn't really grab me. In my opinion, there are much better releases from the 1998 vintage. For me, one I'd rank at the back in this category. I don't even want to say a word about the price.

German Rum Festival Berlin 2025. A first nose with more bitter herbs and overripe fruits than mechanical workshop. Then tar and rubber gain strength and become equal with the other aromas. The palate is more powerful than the nose suggested. The same aromas invade the palate with force but unfortunately not much balance. Here too, the side of fermented herbs and overripe fruits clashes with the mechanical workshop. The finish is long, but the same imbalance persists.

Nose: Caroni? But quite pale! Not much there except spice and oak. Palate: more going on here, dirt and smoke, a little medicinal (iodine), alcohol not optimally integrated, peppery, slightly bitter on the finish. Finish: medium length, tannins, lots of oak, reminds me of old Clarendons at the end. Hmm, the price definitely raised different and, above all, higher expectations. The Caroni profile only becomes noticeable on the palate. As a non-Caroni fanboy, I lack the overview to properly classify the bottling. However, my guess is that there are better options for less money.

#5642 07.09.2025 Enjoying this wonderful sample i bought in Berlin. A pretty good release and now there's far between the really good Caroni's, unfortunately. Fortunately I know where good barrels are located 😅 German Rum Fest 2025 sample.

A crazy experiment! 98 Caroni finished in a 90 Hampden cask. All the caroni markers are there, but they are softer, more accessible and complemented and caressed with even more esters and tropical fruits. Like putting caroni in a sweet brioche bun. Sau cool.

Trade fair review: the somewhat different Caroni - Hampden finish definitely noticeable through esters and tropical fruits. The Caroni aromas are there but disappear relatively quickly in the finish. Nice experiment, but one sample is enough at that price.

Interesting experiment. While it’s definitely worth a try (in the sense of putting the Caroni in the Hampden cask as well as trying this bottling), I would much prefer each individually…. The Hampden notes are more overpowering than enhancing the Caroni for the most part.

30-08-2025 - Rate 9.0 German Rum Festival When we saw this Caroni at the Colours of Rum stand, we had to try it. Have never tasted a Caroni finished on a Hampden cask before. Have tried several Hampden rums finished in a Caroni cask. Classic Carino nose with rubber and tar. A hits is ester and tropical fruit. Palate follows nice the same notes. Fun and special to taste Caroni with ester notes. Long finish dominated by rubber and tar with a hint of ester.

Initially, I only smelled Hampden. Slowly the esters clear and Caroni notes actually dominate on the nose. On the palate, Hampden and Caroni alternate somehow and the latter remains in the finish. Interesting experiment, but I don't really consider it meaningful. For me, it was in the Hampden barrel too long. A trace would have been enough...
