Back to a small sample from Gwenn Robyns: The Rum Mercenary Dominican Republic A.F.D 2010 This is a Single Cask distilled in 2010 at AFD (Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos), aged 8 years before being bottled in 2019 at 62.4%. I rarely comment on rums from this origin. So, who is behind AFD? Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos is a major distillery in the Dominican Republic inaugurated in May 2010. It sources sugarcane from its own estate as well as from agricultural partners, representing about 80,000 hectares of plantations. Annual production reaches nearly 16 million liters, two-thirds of which are destined for export. In the glass: The nose is quite complex, mixing dates, coffee, and maple syrup. A delicately spiced butter caramel note completes this exotic and engaging profile. On the palate, the surprise is there: an impression of Cointreau (orange liqueur) dominates at first, before giving way to spices, vanilla, and always that thread of maple syrup. The finish, sweet and of medium length, clearly leans towards orange zest. Conclusion I knew little about this distillery and I must admit this distillate pleasantly surprised me. With its unique profile revolving around orangette, I expected much less interesting!
