Spirit of the day Navy Rum 2025
Sipped neat is where this Navy blend earns its keep — pour it, give it air, and it opens into dark berries, warm tar, dark chocolate and orchard fruit over roasted oak and spice. The Trinidad TDL side leads, with Caroni's diesel-and-leather and a lighter Jamaican funk behind. At 54.5% the alcohol sits remarkably well. Several tasters call the balance close to perfect.

# 23.10.2025 A nice relaxing day with Fabian in a summehouse in Blåvand 🇩🇰 The nose is absolutely gorgeous and well balanced despite the ABV. Nice eucalyptus, light wood, faint pear, light dried fruit, faint floral, ligt tar. On the palate it's very well balanced with lots of natural sweetness. Fruity with nice caramel, light wood and some faint mint. Medium long and sweet with nice light cherry ad raisin, very faint tar.

What a positive surprise and when I see the price-performance ratio, a real recommendation for every Navy lover 👍🏻 On the nose, the TDL markers clearly dominate, with slight Hampden and Caroni aromas also recognizable. On the palate, a nice complexity of dark berries, freshness, burnt caramel, cask, spice, mocha, and a slight tar aroma. In the end, the heavy dark aromas dominate and hold in the finish 😋. That’s how a Navy should be.

Nose: very relaxed and still lots to discover! I recognize Jamaica at first, darker notes are also there but I can't place them. Palate: very complex and balanced! I find freshness like in a Grays but also dirt. New associations keep coming up. Finish: no trace of bitterness, more freshness, herbs. I'm overwhelmed by making notes on this rum. My recommendation: just enjoy it!

I am so glad I have a bottle of this. I consider this a truly top-notch blend. Possibly in the top navy blends I tasted so far. On the nose, I can really smell the Caroni notes of strawberries and the heavy leather tones, interspersed with funky Jamaican notes. On the palate, everything in this blend plays a wonderfully harmonious role. Perfect transitions of Jamaica, Caroni, TDL, and DDL play out in your mouth. With every sip, in a different order. First the Caroni is in the foreground, and with a later sip, the DDL is more prominent, with the finish consisting of fruity and leather notes. Full and complex. As mentioned, this is truly a treat. High quality.

Now this is some very nice Navy richness on the nose. TDL is in the driver seat with berry notes. Caroni workshop notes are also quite noticeable and provide additional depth. DDL and Hampden add additional complexity on the nose. Very nice blend! Same picture on the palate, very well executed and balanced. Not dominated by DDL, yet on the darker and noticably complexed side of Navy blends. Very well done.

We continue the Navy Rum comparison. 👃 Dominance of the TDL profile (black berries, eucalyptus), Caroni just behind (hot tar, essential oils, fruit tree flowers), Guyana a bit in the background (dark chocolate, sap, caramel on heather, dried fruits). Hampden must be a low ester and/or in small quantity. This one brings a whole set of orchard fruits (we're far from the classic overripe pineapple/banana combo) such as pear, green apple, dried apricot. The blend of all these styles even develops malted barley aromas. A complex, layered nose with a fruity side. 😋 More marked by wood and Demerara style. Toasted oak barrel, spices (chili, pepper, cooking spices), fruit juice caramel, dark chocolate. I find the fruits, rather dry like those in Christmas cakes, black berries, traces of guava and candied papaya. Note of hot tar, light diesel, sap. A finish on black tea and dried mint leaves. A balanced, oily mouthfeel, darker than on the nose, but without being overwhelmed by wood. Alcohol very well integrated, perfectly boosting the different flavors. ⛳ Long, warm, woody, spicy, dry, bitter, fresh and tannic. Note of cherry, dried mint, herbaceous sensation. 🏆 Respect for the balance of the blend's origins (although Jamaica is a bit in the background, I think), a balanced, evolving, complex whole. An excellent representative of the Navy Rum style, moreover at an unbeatable price (115€ for 50cl). I'm disappointed I didn't order it in time. 📝 Ranking in progress; Velier Royal Navy (92) > SotD Navy Rum (90) > Swell Funky Navy (89) > Velier Tiger Shark (86+).

Navy rums are really popping up like mushrooms right now, so the SOTD has to hold its own against some competition... first impression on the nose: more on the fruity side, I'd guess a 2005 or 2009 TDL. Then the Diamond profile comes through. Hampen isn't super intense, more like medium range esters. I can only detect the Caroni part with a lot of goodwill. The palate is very round and spicy, pleasantly easy-drinking with a nicely long finish. It's hard for me to rate because it's really well made. But when I compare it to, say, the Tiger Shark, which is more intense and also cheaper per 70cl, it puts things into perspective.

Nice and dark. That was my first impression. Absolutely beautiful nose. On the palate, the various markers of the blended rums unfold. Everything feels very harmonious and well balanced. This is a Navy Rum, not like the Swell Funky Navy, where basically only the Hamden notes dominate.

This bottling is amazing, great value for money! Tasted on the beach in Denmark, where it feels a little closer to the tradition of Navy rum. Dark, intense aromas gather in the nose, clearly TDL character with herbal influences, light coolness and dark fruits. The 57% ABV is really well integrated on the palate and perfectly accompanies the rum's almost Christmassy character traits. Star anise, a little clove and barrel influences, plus rubber and leather, a little tobacco at the back - a beautiful blend that has been put together correctly!

Nose: fruity, floral, ester notes, slightly burnt, very exciting and multifaceted Palate: complex, fermented fruit, spicy, clove, good Jamaican influence Finish: long, complex, woody, slightly bitter What a beautiful piece, I like it very very much

Cologne/Bonner Rum Meetup: after what felt like 100 Cognacs and Armagnacs, the first rum. Finally, a proper Navy blend where you can taste all the marks. I find the alcohol a bit too intense.

J'ai pu me procurer un sample avant une bouteille et je ne regrette pas mon achat. Hâte de lui donner plus de temps car il est complexe à souhait et me semble très évolutif. Le nez est particulièrement agréable. Superbe navy.

Beautiful complexity with this Navy. The first note I sense is the TDL, with menthol notes and a bit of tar. Then come the other two components of this superb juice with ripe fruits, roast, woodiness, a bit of cherry, chocolate, and chili. Nice integration of the alcohol and good length on the palate. I fully approve ❤️❤️

So, after the Navy Blend from Ricci didn't grab me because it was too balanced for my taste, today I have the SOTD Navy Blend in the glass. It takes its time, but then it does its job very well. On the nose, TDL clearly dominates for me—very fruity, a caramel sweetness, and very fresh. But you can also detect subtle glue notes from Hampden, subtle but definitely there. On the palate, there's a complexity I honestly didn't expect. Great heavy aromas, with malt dominating for me. Red berries refine the flavor in the background. Also a pleasant freshness on the palate. In the finish, which is nicely long, barrel flavors and tannins dominate. Another convincing bottling from SOTD, only the poor fill level of the bottles (each of the 3 bottles was missing 2cl) slightly dampens the joy. Of course, it's no Royal Navy—that remains the reference—but a great Navy Blend with exactly the little edges and character that I missed in the Ricci.

Interesting, bold nose. Fruity, a bit of banana, some spice, a hint of funk, hardly any wood, caramel. Nicely intertwined. Alcohol perfectly integrated. On the palate, a bit fuzzier, fruitier, spicier. Here the 🇯🇲🇯🇲 comes through more strongly. Very good finish. Thanks to Bonn for the nice sample!!

Wow, I'm pleasantly surprised! One of the best blends in recent times!

Now I have left the rum in a covered glass for over an hour, but the nose still doesn't grab me. Quite fruity, floral, with very subtle Caroni notes. But somehow too weak and restrained. On the palate, however, it’s really enjoyable, with rather heavy, spicy, and roasted notes.

Oha...

Bravo !

Charismatic blend. Combining best of TDL and Caroni dominant right from the nosing. Well balanced on palate, fresh, even some glue, some esters, berries, barrel. Great balanced blend. I like it.
Review by Shayane GREDOIRE
A complex and balanced navy rum leaning more towards TDL aromas than Caroni. And for me, that’s better! As usual with Spirit of the Day at a bargain price compared to the competition, making it one of the best value-for-money in its category. We want more!!!

Very good, nice balance and fresh. Beautiful complexity at the start then predominance of the TDL at the end of the mouth so that I only feel that for my part.
