An excellent product. Caroni is definitely the right place for entertaining and unique aromas. On the nose, caramel, berries, and tropical fruits spread out. Almost nutty, dark chocolate, wood, and herbs come along. On the palate, there is a nice and fruity sweetness. Dark caramel, berries, and again chocolate transition into cookie dough and leather, ending in woody and herbal tones. Tea and cask notes are in the background. Very complex and well-balanced. The finish is long with notes of caramel, cocoa, leather, herbs, and interesting cask influences. The empty glass smells fantastic. I am really impressed by this complex creation, which always follows a certain balance. Many thanks to Rumkopf for the sample.

Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Very smooth Caroni, which wasn’t harmed by the slight reduction to Navy Strength. The rum perfectly expresses the 96 sweetness, accompanied by notes of rubber, fresh oak, and especially a prominent spiciness of coffee, pepper, and clove. For a long time, it was a still easily available Caroni from 1996, but it has now “caught up” and prices are rising too – but at least it can be said that the quality in the glass is absolutely convincing. An excellent representative of what I consider an outstanding 1996 vintage.

Unfolds its full potential after about 45 minutes in the air. After waiting, you're rewarded with a fantastic Caroni nose: tar, rubber, caramel, and solvents – the HTR profile in pure form. On the palate, incredibly complex, and the pleasant sweetness of the 1996 vintage adds the perfect counterpoint to the rather dirty notes. Rightly a classic among the tropically aged Caronis! Complex yet balanced and tasty. A real experience!

Definitely a good rum but mouth is quite disapointing with some pepper / chilli notes which are quite disturbing. Alcohol integration could have been better as well for the nose. What a surprise for a diluted version of "Trespassers" bottling, one of my favourite Caroni 👀

RumXmas #24, blind: Very “Foursquare” in the nose, but the dirty, tarry and rubbery Caroni is present on the palate. The good, balanced kind, fruity and very well rounded. The one it comes closest to in my experience so far, is a Cadenhead’s Caroni 1998 TMCG, but there the “dirty aspects” are less present compared to this one. Alcohol probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 60%. Absolutely brilliant, one of the highlights of the calendar. Spirits Museum Tasting 29th of March 2025. A sweet, refined, powerful, balanced, gourmand and refreshing nose. It's hard to reconcile so many adjectives in a single rum. The alcohol and wood are perfectly integrated, unobtrusive and supportive of the aromas. Tropical fruit, machine-shop notes and herbal freshness are on a par. A sweet sweetness adds complexity without overpowering. The alcohol comes out a little more on the palate, initially masking the other aromas, which then develop as they did on the nose. The finish is slightly acidic and astringent, but super-long, with all the complexity of the nose. A magnificent rum that I look forward to tasting again with more oxidation.

Great mix of fruits and caroni. Very balanced and pleasant to drink. It’s a high 90 candidate, if it wasn‘t watered down.. Update: Found this is a small restaurant in italy. After the second sip, still an amazing rum.

Really incredible quality. Definitely one of my highlight rums so far. Eternal finish, but still very round balanced 96 Caroni. At the 2nd tasting still a rum to kneel down. Wow.

A wonderful Caroni! So balanced yet so complex, very enjoyable. I gave this one a bit of time in the glass. Love the dirty notes, tar and rubber, but I love the slight sweetness as well. Spicy and some fruits as well as it being quite oily on the palate. A lovely long finish, A great start to my Velier tasting journey😁

8,9:On the nose, the first impression we get is a bit rigid, as fruit notes are almost non existent, we notice tar&rubber and roasted wood with nuts.Slowly dried fruits crawl out, with apricots, raisins, caramel and toffee from wood and some menthol. On aeration, coconut and citrus are out, some spice, then tropical fruits with mango, passion fruit, as a molasses is candied. Now solvents and dirty notes are felt more, so are leather and coffee. 9,1:On the palate, the attack is a very opposite of the nose, as tropical and dried fruits with mango, raisins, apricots totally occupy our tasting buds.Roasted wood with caramel and spicy vanilla slowly gather power, keep the rum balanced, delicious when industrial dirty notes arrive with rubber and tar.After some rest, the molasses brings tea and tobacco, there are some anise, faint menthol, citrus with mandarine and some currants. Not heavy Caroni at all, but very tasty. 8,9:The finish is long, dry and a bit tannic, still very round, some new notes join the spectre from before like herbaceous molasses and some chocolate... An elaborate Caroni that oscillates between power and elegance. The nose is full of dirty notes of hydrocarbons and car workshop, with a good dose of smoky notes that hint at oak. Spices tease the nose with baked caramel and molasses. Dried, tropical fruits add roundness to the nostrils, with hints of coconut on the long finish. An excellent balance between the authenticity of the juice and its sweetness. The attack on the palate is spectacular, both in the richness and subtlety of the aromas. The oiliness comes out in full force, with a spicy touch of vanilla and pepper. Leather and smoky notes fill the palate, but the exotic fruits and dried fruits are still very drinkable and voluptuous. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is extremely long, imbued with dirty, empyreumatic notes. The spices give the wine a warm, lively quality that is echoed on the palate. The greediness of fruit and caramel is still palpable. A Caroni so delicious you could drink it every day, at once full-bodied, deep, rich and very fine. A pure sensory delight.

Super rum. An exquisite drink. The nose is more restrained than other Caronis. The bouquet is wonderful. Excellent balance. Sweet, fruity, chocolate, coffee and spices, blue fruits such as blackberry and cassis, vanilla. Only the not so long finish gives cause for a little criticism.

RumX Advent Calendar, 24.12, blind.First impression: a super Demerara, direction CBH, or TDL? With time, the increasingly dirty and minty, vlt. but Caroni? nose: incredibly beautiful, compact, aromatic, round. Spicy-fruity with orange, cherry, grape and berries as well as vanilla, tobacco and light licorice. Lovely woody and a fine vinegar note to it. Fresh mint, light at the beginning, getting stronger at the end. With time it gets dirtier and goes towards Caroni.Palate: complex, tasty. Minty and pleasantly woody, slightly bitter and malty-spicy. In fruit I find cassis, lemon, orange peel, peach, candied orange peel. Some anise and leather and a touch of pistachio. Hardly dirty on the palate.A beautiful, fruity and compact Caroni with less dirty flavors.

This is a Caroni from one of their exceptional years and it is a great rum. This rum is very hard to find and the price is very high now. Typical Caroni with rubber and tar, yum. Lots of wood and wood tannins with added fruity notes and spices. Lightly dry but we'll balanced and complex. Would have loved a few backup bottles of this particular one.

very round Caroni, on the nose dried apricot, caramel sweetness, furniture polish, spices (allspice / vanilla) and wood barrel. On the palate also rather sweet and spicy notes. The toasty/charred notes occur here rather discreetly, not as brute as in the 93 vintage for a long time.

Very similar to trespasser you can feel very much that the vintages are the same! In my opinion 1996 is the best vintage of caroni and this blend proves it! A perfect balance of hydrocarbon wood and fruit!

Dirty, phenolic, varnish, tar, barrel, oily, the whole workshop is there! Full in the face - shows a very extensive flavor spectrum and is an absolute must for all Caroni lovers!

Day 24 in the RumX Advent calendar and my nose is blocked but it's Christmas and I had to try 😁 At first on the nose wood and coconut, where Barbados is not far. With some time in the glass I perceive raisins and marzipan. Merry Christmas 🎄 On the palate suddenly a sweetness, I have berries, I have incredibly delicious complex stuff that I can't really break down into parts today. The finish is slightly warm, still a bit sweet, spicy and above all present. With a lot of patience I also get the 'dirty' Caroni moments. Overall wonderfully balanced. This is premium, even with a closed 👃😁 Merry Xmas to all rum friends here 🎄

Caramel color, with red hues on the edge Nose: it starts of with delicate fruity notes of pineapple and coconut, with a “dirty” background of dust and glue. The barrel note is also present, and a very faint vanilla. With some “professional” slurping, the gasoline, rubber and tar notes really shine through. Palate: less fruity on the palate, where sweet flavor of honey, caramel and dark chocolate take over, leaving behind that dusty sensation as the spirit goes down the throat. There’s a sustained astringency, along with a nice warmth left by the rum.

An absolutely worthy conclusion to the RX calendar with the 34th release 96 Caroni. I really like it. Lots of dark fruit notes/dry fruit. But also the typical factory notes with tar and rubber. But here rather in the background. Thanks also to the RX organization team for the great calendar 👍.

"The Last" Caroni Light! I think that sums it up quite well. The parallels to the benchmark are clearly there, in my opinion. The main difference? Clearly the intensity, because the dilution of the heavy naturally leaves its mark. Nevertheless, it is extremely complex, fruity, dried fruit, tropical fruit, glue, polish and wonderfully warm and sweet on the nose. A little thin on the palate, yet mouth-filling and sweet. The fruit diminishes somewhat, more spice, wood, polish and kerosene. A wonderful, somewhat cheaper alternative to "The Last"

Second tasting, I confirm my intial rating. In the direct comparison to RX213 it’s indeed on the downside. But still a very good rum I might have done too many burnouts, but there is neither tar nor rubber. But there is an amazing complexity on the nose. The rum needs some time to rest in the glas and over time it develops an amazing range of aroma. On the palate, the rum is less complex, the cask is slightly too present and the abv could be better integrated. It doesn’t match the expectations of the nose but is still a complex or better, challenging rum. The finish is very long, dominated by the cask

Day 24, Christmas Eve RumX Advent Calendar: at first sniff I immediately thought of Foursquare, coconut, sweet, spicy, solvent and raisin. Also on the palate I felt confirmed and settled on Foursquare 2008, although I wasn't sure about the age as 2008 might be too young. Once again totally wrong. Again a Caroni. Very tasty, but I really didn't recognize the typical dirty aromas. In the finish maybe some herbs, menthol and anise. Overall a great rum.

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.

Among all those Caronis I love the dirty distillery notes. Here the expression of these technical smells is very intense. Taste-wise it is a wonderfully complex and balanced rum that strongly reminds me that it belonged to that stinky family. Gorgeous. I hope to taste a bigger sample sometime.

Such exceptional rum should be left in the glass to air for a long time. In the meantime, keep smelling it. A wonderfully complex sweet aroma that brings out many different fruits. This in combination with leather and the wonderfully typical "dirty" Caroni tones. A full complex aroma with also woody tones from the barrel. In the mouth, that sweetness of strawberries with the leather and tar and the other Caroni tones comes forward super. Full, complex but also soft and a bit dry. A wonderfully long aftertaste in which the tones of leather and fruit linger for a long time. A wonderful Caroni all round, but somewhat softened for my taste. In addition, wonderfully fruity and round. Update 27-09: Again the opportunity to taste it with a good friend and this time it gave me goose bumps. Lovely. Absolutely great.

Dirty spirit for real adults! I like it. Tar, rubber, dirty nose, opening up after minutes in glass. Same dry dirty taste at palate plus burned suggar, caramel, tar, wood, nice finish when it finally come to peace in mouth. Very good Caroni for me, Iam happy I have more then this one sample:)

Mega delicious. Nice drinking strength and tropical aging is simply a quality statement for Caroni. Nice tar and rubber notes. Also somewhat fruity. It was under the radar for a long time but a very pleasant representative of the 1996 vintage if you don't need full proof right now.

Great variety on the nose. Different with time and every breath. Rubber, vanilla, leather, tobacco, coconut. After standing longer, a soft caramel appears. Overall very intense and the alcohol barely noticeable. Pleasantly soft in the mouth, initially rather dry, roasted/woody, after about 40 minutes in the glass a completely new, unusual taste appears, almost fruity but not in a Jamaica style, more like fruit tea. That was unexpected! The finish is very long and is what I like best about this rum. Strong vanilla with tobacco and leather. Then the workshop note, which for me always relates somewhat to overripe fruits. Occasionally also bitter and astringent. On exhaling suddenly the aroma of rum raisins. My first Caroni and I expected significantly more "technique". The slight rubber/tar note disappears after a quarter of an hour in the glass. Dominating is the vanilla-leather combination, nice thing. The completely new taste note after longer breathing is very exciting, especially since I have never had this aroma in the glass before. Tasted at German rum festival 2024 and 2025. Wow. Fantastic rum. Very happy I tried this one. Less distinctive than other Caroni's I've tried though. Retested in 2025, and still of the opinion that this is a very good rum.
