Blind, you'd never call this a Savanna — the sherry cask swallows the distillery whole. Ten-plus years in ex-sherry piles on dark chocolate, prunes, charred oak and burnt sugar, with a sulphur/gunpowder streak running through the middle. Powerful at 60% but the alcohol sits well. Rich and oily, dry and bitter on the long finish. You either fall for the sherry bomb or you don't.

Savanna-Online-Tasting WLP 26.09.2025 - 87 Punkte Update 2025-09-28: Da ich mehrfach auf meine Bewertung angesprochen wurde, habe ich diesen Rum nochmals verkostet. Ein super Spalter-Rum! 😂 Ich wusste bisher nicht, dass ich verbrannte Zündplätzchen nicht nur olfaktorisch, sondern auch geschmacklich mag, aber so ist es. Für mich ist dies ein sehr erwachsener, leicht verrückter Rum, der mit etwas zu enormer Kraft daherkommt (für eine Verkostung mit einem Tropfen Wasser hat die Probe leider nicht mehr gereicht). Wenn andere ihn nicht mögen, gut für mich, dann wird es kein Problem, eine ganze Flasche zu ergattern. Bewertung bleibt bestehen. 😉 Update 2025-12-16: Kleines Savanna-Crosstasting mit Soforteinschätzung, daher nur kurz: Der Rum ist einfach interessant, gefällt mir immer noch sehr gut, aber nicht mehr ganz so wie beim ersten Mal, der Abgang ist bitterer als in Erinnerung. Daher 2 Punkte Abzug.

Savanna Tasting RumX 26.09.25: This Wild Island Edition is just not my thing. The 19 years in sherry casks have left their mark... but not in a positive way. On the nose, there's mostly old dark heavy sherry. On the palate, at first burnt caramel and a slight roastiness. Then it develops an aroma of old musty, mushroomy forest floor with a hint of sulfur... this remains dominant in the finish... you have to like that. I don't.

Mmh I'm not really warming to this Savanna. The nose is almost musty Musty fermented ... Red fruits and sweetness . On the palate it tastes like an old port wine, lots of sweet plum and many bitter substances. Unfortunately not my cup of tea at all. Would never have guessed this rum blind as Savanna. Conclusion: Too bad about the original rum

8,1:On the nose, red wine, sulphurous, leather, dried fruits like prunes, dates, cherries, burnt, charred oak, dark, umami, soy sauce and black tea, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, raisins, citrus fruits arise, more roasted notes with burnt sugar, roasted nuts, chocolate, dirty tones, the molasses is mineral. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is dark with burnt, charred wood notes, spicy, sherry finish like dark chocolate, roasted nuts like pecans, leather, sulphur, dried fruits like prunes, dates, raisins, dirty notes and rubber, briny, vegetal molasses, musty, black tea, soy sauce. 8,1:The finish is long, dry&tannic, as the notes from palate linger on, even more smoky and dirty, earthy(musty, cigar tobacco, ashy). Heute mal ein kleines wildes (teilweise island) savanna Tasting. L'Absolute 2025, sehr solider und leckerer Savanna mit ordentlichem Holzeinschlag. Der Preis ist sehr häppig für das Gebotene. 8.2 Unshared Cask CZ, schon sehr viel weicher am Gaumen, hellere Fruchtnoten mit dem typischen Erdbeerjoghurt. Zum Abgang hin wird es wild adstringent und die Früchte karamelisiert. Etwas scharf und unrund zum Ende hin. Dennoch sehr interessant. Sternenhimmel, hui, der spaltet völlig zurecht die Gemüter. Sehr schwefelig. Ich kann mich noch nicht ganz entscheiden, ob ich ihn mag oder nicht. Grotte, fruchtig, sehr viel vergorene Früchte. Kurzer Abgang, Alkohol nicht ideal eingebunden. Fällt etwas im Vergleich ab.

The sherry cask almost overwhelms the rum, only very rarely does the basic character shine through. That could work for me, but unfortunately the cask shows a slight sulfur contamination which noticeably dampens my enjoyment. What a pity! Savanna Masterclass. I agree, a really good rum. Clearly the sherry cask finish is noticeable but really well integrated. Otherwise, some wood is recognizable. A real top rum in my opinion.

Very heavy influence from the cask. Sherry is very dominant in the overall profile. There is also lots of wood and burnt notes taking the Savanna profile somewhat hostage. Finish lingers with very long with lots of wood and bitterness.

Savanna tasting on 09/26/2025 – Eight samples were tasted and expertly explained. The Savanna hype somehow passed me by again, but it was a really great event. Many thanks to RumX and the Savanna team – more of this, please! The Savannas are true masters and craftsmen. Complex, 60% ABV, caressing on the palate. Working with different styles like Creole, Traditional, and HERR leads to a variety that few distilleries offer. All top-notch! Third sample of the Wild Island. Traditional, the sherry finish dominates. Great rum, easy to drink, for me (I can't do much with estery rum) the best of the evening.

Un Savanna assez surprenant. Le nez révèle la finition en fût de sherry, et son influence est très présente. Vin cuit, beaucoup d'amande amère façon amaretto. Le nez apporte des effluves salines, mélangée à un côté très pâtissier avec cette amande. Le boisé est discret malgré ses 15 ans de vieillissement. En bouche, encore pas mal d'amande avec aussi de la vanille. Le boisé est plus présent. Le tout et assez rond et gourmand mais quelque chose surprend en fin de bouche : c'est comme boire la tasse dans une eau thermale souffre. Des saveurs plus rôties ferment la marche vers une finale moyenne. Agréable mais spécial.

I had very high expectations but they were not really met. Why put a 2008 Grand Arome aged over 10 years in a sherry cask? The Grand Arome now only makes up 20% of the aroma profile, the sherry influence is extremely dominant with lots of nutty, smoky aromas, plus cocoa, sea salt and quite a bit of sulfur, as well as gunpowder. Almost reminiscent of a cigar on the finish. Unfortunately, it absolutely does not suit my taste. The sherry is just too dominant and mercilessly overwhelms the Grand Arome, plus this gunpowder note that I just don't like here. This is not what I expect from a Grand Arome...

Dégustation d'un sample de 2cl. 🎨 Très belle couleur sherry, d'un caramel très foncé à châtaigne. 👃 Whaou ! Bombe de Xérès mélangée à de la mélasse ! Odeurs caractéristiques des fûts des Bodegas espagnoles, le bois est sombre, brûlé, carbonisé. Tanins de vin rouge puissant, charpenté, sensation soufrée et légèrement goudronnée. Après ce premier contact coup de poing, du chocolat noir au sel marin avec des cristaux de sucres brûlés et bâton de cannelle grillé. Les fruits se fraient un chemin, sous forme de fruits secs et confiturés, raisins de Corinthe, quetsches, cerises noires. 😋 La bouche fait complètement écho au nez, sur une texture huileuse de fût de sherry sombre et carbonisé. Je retrouve cette saveur de fût de vin de Madère utilisé pour le vieillissement des rhums de la distillerie Engenhos do Norte. Nouvelles notes de piment du bonbon, de noix brûlées, de sucs de fruits collés au fond de la marmite (prunes, dattes). En prenant le temps, je retrouve cette saveur caractéristique de pâtisserie de forêt noire, chocolat noir, cacao, sucre brûlé et cerises au kirsch. ⛳ Très longue, chaude, sombre, sherry à souhait et donc en total accord avec le reste de la dégustation. Chocolat noir amer, vanille rôtie, gros sel de cuisine, fruits secs emmêlassés. 💡Profil très atypique, extrêmement boisé, un poil clivant mais si vous êtes amateur de whisky vieilli intégralement en fût de sherry alors vous adorerez ce Rum.

This bottling was rather a disappointment for me among all the other Savannas that evening. The sherry/red wine is too dominant in this bottling for me. It also has a burnt/charred taste that I didn't like at all.

05-12-2025 - Rate 9.0 The 4th. in a line up of 5 different Savanna rums. If it’s because of the many consecutive Savanna rums or because we put together a good line up, must remain unanswered. 26.09.2025 Savanna tasting from Paris while attending the Whisky Live 2025. Nose Fresh, wood, light roasted, light cherry, light chocolate, spice, faint rubber, light anise. Palate Oily, fresh, fruity, medium spicy, wood, light earthy, faint coffee, light nutts, citrus, light cherry. Finish Long and warm, fresh, oily, wood, light anise, dried fruit, light floral.

Wood, roasted nuts, fermented fruits, vegetal notes and sulfur on the nose, on the palate comes heavy sweetness of chocolate and dried fruits. The sulfur note takes some getting used to, but overall the profile is by no means unbalanced. The Savanna spectrum once again proves its impressive versatility.

Tasting in the Savanna masterclass 2025. On the nose clearly gunpowder and also the sherry influence. On the palate quite a certain sharpness but also a deep aroma. I like it very much.

Great Savanna tasting with Artur. A somewhat confusing nose of sour apple, heated plastic, and tropical fruits. The palate is strange with sour apple and heated plastic. The finish is long but not very pleasant, with not only the plastic but also a slight sulfur note.

Dégustation de 4 samples de cette nouvelle édition Wild. Je suis un grand fan de ce que fait Savanna, de leurs rhums atypiques et variés. J’ai beaucoup apprécié ces nouveaux rhums et je ne prendrai pas en compte le prix exorbitant comparé aux versions précédentes… Avant de me plonger dans cette édition Wild, j’ai fait un tour sur le Savanna Unshared Belgium Mérou, que j’avais noté 8,4, afin de me donner un point de repère. Voici mon coup de cœur : profil atypique, il m’a vraiment fait penser à une bodega espagnole. Il est puissant, que ce soit en bouche ou au nez. Je peux comprendre qu’il ne plaise pas à tout le monde, mais moi, j’ai adoré. L’alcool est très bien intégré et on retrouve le fil conducteur du sherry tout au long de la dégustation. Le boisé et les fruits se mélangent à la perfection.

Clearly influenced by the sherry cask, with intense notes of red fruits, raisins and a vinous heaviness. Sweetish and dark on the nose, powerful on the palate with red wine character, plus some spice and a noticeable wood note. The alcohol feels present, the balance not quite found yet. Probably needs time in the glass to open up. For me, too dominated by the finish.

Savanna x RumX 2025. Savanna Navy style? a little, but rounder. Sherry, gunpowder? Savanna The Wild Island Edition - Night 2008 is an UFO vria in the range, I think. An intense, caramelized, roasted eau-de-vie, with accents of port (normal), pecans and chocolate. Very intense, but rather accessible thanks to 10+ years in sherry casks.

Ein Rum mit Sherry-Finish, das eine dominante Marke hinterlassen hat. Es startet sehr dunkel, modrig, röstig bis hin zu rauchig, Zigarre, Tabak. Außerdem Rotweinassoziationen mit dunklen Früchten. Sherry überall stark bemerkbar, schwer, ölig, dreckig im Mund und Abgang. Ein Profil, mit dem man sich anfreunden können muss.

Du sherry en veux-tu, en voilà ! Le retour de la Wild Island Edition de chez Savanna a été remarqué par cette sortie vieillie intégralement en fût de sherry, et Dieu que c’est controversé. Le nez est envahi par le sherry et ses arômes sombres, boisés et soufrés. Le raisin sec et le sucre brulé ajoutent de la lourdeur à un profil dompté par le fût. Il faut vraiment aimer ce type profil ultra concentré. La bouche, bien que huileuse et agréable, est totalement dominée par l’archétype du sherry : bois, notes rôties voir brûlées (notamment sur le sucre), fruits secs, chocolat, soupçon de piment et soufre sont sans pitié au palais. Le vieillissement a eu raison du profil de base qui est complètement altéré, c’est vraiment dommage. L’alcool est plutôt noyé dans cet amas de lourdeur rôtie et sucrée. La finale est extrêmement longue, portée par ce côté sec, amer et rôti à souhait. Le chocolat, les fruits secs, le sherry, la poudre à canon et la mélasse plonge le profil dans l’obscurité et ne laissent que des miettes aux autres arômes. Un Savanna qui, bien que buvable sur le papier, a perdu son identité. Une finition en fût de sherry aurait été largement suffisante pour apporter de la rondeur et de la complexité sans dénaturer le profil.

Savanna x RumX Masterclass 2025. I had a very unique opportunity to taste several Savannas during this special masterclass. I had a wonderful evening. Strong sherry notes, but not too overpowering for me. I really enjoyed it, though. Long finish.

Phew, very disappointing, I had high expectations for this bottling. Michel Couvreur has achieved sensational results with whisky in sherry casks - Savanna unfortunately did not succeed here. You can still guess the base, but the influences from the sherry cask are so dominant that you really have to be a fan of this special flavor profile. Sherry and old, charred cask, plus red fruits and sweet hints - if you like that, great rum. Not mine.

V chuti je agricole DNA znatelnější více. Parádní kousek a pro mě asi největší překvapení série. 🥃 Marine Cave 🏞️ Traditionnel, 2009, 15 let, ex-cognac, 62,6% Potřebuje delší čas ve sklenici, než se pořádně otevře. Pak nabídne bohaté aroma ořechů, lehké praženosti, karamelu, hnědého cukru, koření a dotek chemie. V chuti se přidávají ovocnější tóny. 🥃 Milky Way 🌌 Traditionnel, 2008, 15 let, ex-sherry, 60,1% Čokoládově nasládlý se dřevem a sušenými švestkami a celkově poměrně tmavý s příjemnou vínovou linkou. Krásně plný a hutný jak ve vůni tak v chuti. Závěr je tu ale nečekaně chemicko-gumový (zvýrazněný ještě po zapití vodou). To mi ale nevadí. 🥃 Tree in flames 🌅 Grand Arome, 2010, 13 let, ex-cognac, 60,9% Záměrně jsem si nechal na konec, protože prostě vrchol. Skvělý nos, jak jsme u Grand Arome Savanny zvyklí. Mix sladkého, zralého tropického ovoce (zvláště banánu) a umělé jahody umocněný akurátní dávkou esterů a chemie a kapka toho dřeva a sladkokyselosti. V chuti ta samá nálož ovocných tónů s estery. Celkově to působí jako gumídci. ______ Opět nádherná přírodní grafika, kterou prostě můžu, a opět špičkové rumy, které prostě můžu. A za mě se určitě staví na stejnou úroveň jako předchozí edice.

An der Nase eine leicht muffige Note, die in Richtung Schwefel geht. Am Gaumen und vor allem im Abgang findet sich diese Note dann viel intensiver. Daneben auch eine schöne rote Frucht und etwas Gewürze, es bleibt aber immer diese für mich unangenehme, leicht schweflige Fehlnote. Für meinen Geschmack leider nicht besonders gelungen.

Ich Schnecke das sherry deutlich, etwas nach Rotwein, vergorene Früchte, Leder, verkohltes Holz. Abfang Mittel bis lang taningaltig etwas muffig. Einige der genannten Eigenschaften mag ich eigentlich nicht so sehr. Trotzdem fand ich den Rum irgendwie total interessant und er hat mir geschmeckt.

Savanna Cross Tasting - November 2025: The Voie Lactee from the new Wild Island Edition is more interesting than the two Grotte. Interesting, but not really good. The sherry finish is clear, but what bothers me are the burnt and sulfurous notes.

Puh, mir deutlich zu viel Sherry Einfluss. Man kann das charakteristische Savanna Profil nicht mehr rausschmecken. Nicht so mein Fall, aber ein schönes Experiment. Laut Sam auch mehr als 10 Jahre im Sherry Cask…

Der klassische savanna Geschmack wird durch das sherry cask aging stark beeinflusst und kommt daher nicht mehr so deutlich hervor. Es ist jedoch nicht zu vergleichen mit anderen neueren Rums bei den durch ein sherry finish eine geringe agingzeit kaschiert wir.
