Grays New Grove Emotion 1969
Sip this one neat and give it a few minutes in the glass. It's a Mauritian blend (with a splash of 1969 in the mix) that leans on red fruit, dark chocolate, coffee and warm oak, with that signature New Grove menthol-eucalyptus lift on the finish. Several tasters mistook it for a Foursquare-TDL hybrid. Balanced and easy to drink, if a touch light-bodied at 47%.
The community says- Red fruit and cocoa
- Well-integrated alcohol
- But: Slightly thin body

How does Grays New Grove Emotion 1969 taste?
Summarized by AI from community reviews.
Fruity, chocolatey Mauritian sipper with menthol finish A widely liked "hidden champion" for many: fruity, chocolatey and beautifully balanced with a minty finish. The common gripe is that the low ABV leaves it slightly thin and short.

Incredibly beautiful, inviting nose of rose petals, caramelized pink grapefruit and a little mint. On the palate, cocoa, coffee, allspice, vanilla and a little cherry are joined by pink grapefruit, sea salt flakes and mocha. The mint and a subtle woodiness return on the finish. The 47% is perfectly chosen. Not too thin, not too strong. Great bottling, very complex and balanced! Could also pass blind as a hybrid of TDL and Foursquare. Thank you Gunnar!

It is rare, far too rare, to discover a diamond among pebbles. And if it happens by chance, it's all the more incredible. But it actually happened with this rum! I'm still blown away. The rum already promises a lot on the nose and reminds me of an old Demerara. So tempting that I can't wait to taste it. Very fruity on the palate, overripe blackcurrants? The alcohol is more perfectly integrated than I have ever experienced with any other rum. The maximum has really been extracted from the 47% vol. The only small drawback: a slight lack of depth and intensity due to the low ABV. But such a small "impurity" is easy to get over with such a fine diamond, isn't it? Top rum under the radar. Update 2023-10-06: The rum remains a top product for me, but has found its champion in the Savoir Faire 2009 with 60% (RX2744). Update 2023-10-18: Tasting again against the RX2744, this time direct. And I have to say that a direct comparison is really enlightening - and doesn't end well for the Emotion 1969 ... It seems like the league leader of the 2nd division playing at the top level in its class against a Champions League team ... 🙄 Try it out and you'll find it confirmed. RumX Advent calendar 09.12.2023 (blind tasting) I wrote in the appropriate place before solving the puzzle: Yes, on the nose I'm also more with FS, although what's amazing here is that you really perceive zero alcohol! A completely different rum on the palate: Not warm-caramel like on the nose, but clearly red-fruity and a little spicy. And what do I always associate with red fruit? That's right, Mauritius! Since this rum is not an alcohol monster, but rather under 50% vol. I'm guessing RX2495. Of course, it could also be another New Grove from Grays with around 45% vol. as there are still a few around ... Or maybe even a TDL. In any case, I like the rum very much. :yum::yum::yum:

Exceptional profile. Almost with some dosage, I suspect. Somewhat scratchy finish despite only 47% and high price. Blind tasting.
Review by Oliver
Wonderful blend of wood influence and fruitiness. Really fun!
Review by DomM
Nice intensity given its low ABV. Nose is intense with honey and spices (cinnamon) as well as some tropical fruits showing nice aging and cask influence. Notes on the palate largely match the nose. Nice intensity and complexity. Definitely raises interest for more bottlings out of Grays.
Review by cigares
A fruity nose with lychee, brown sugar, banana and gentian. More interesting on the palate than the nose would suggest, with complexity, fruit and more root. Medium finish with blackcurrant. A rum with a very fine mouthfeel but a nose that's a little behind the times.
Review by Jakob
Very round nose, warm wood meets fresh and dried fruit and fine spices. On the palate, the latter take the reins and take control with very crisp roasted notes. The fruit complements the spectrum and creates a harmonious overall picture, which lacks the final complexity and therefore cannot reach even higher rating spheres for me.

Retasting at Whisky Live in Paris 27.09.2024-30.09.2024. --------------------- The other day I picked up a shipment of rum and I have now surpassed 200 rums in my collection. This particular rum i am enjoying right now and its a really nice and typical rum from Mauritius. Fruity spice nose going onto a wonderful fruity palate with vanilla and a hint of coffee. The oldest rum in this blend is from 1969 (10% of the blend) and it gives a nice depth to the final blend. The proof has been very well integrated with the fruit and spices. Price to quality is very good though it can be hard to get a bottle.
Review by Christoph
Even if the rum is not overly complex opens here an extremely delicious aroma of wood, citrus, mint and eucalyptus. An absolute insider tip.
Review by Righrum
RumX advent calendar - day 9 A bit weak due to low abv. Some leather notes reminds of st lucia, and is missing the usual mango while in mouth there are tropical fruits that recall me of rums from clarendon
Review by LukaŽiga
8,4:On the nose, the first impression we get is very pleasant with dried fruits like raisins, apricots and citrus with an orange, as a wood is roasted with caramel, pastry, nuts, spicy with vanilla, nutmeg, shortly full-bodied. On aeration, a molasses brings tea and musty, slightly minty notes, some peaches pop up, dried currants. Some tannins are present, bring waxes, there might be some rubber. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is mostly fruity with tropical fruits like passion fruit, pineapple, later toasted coconut and even banana, dried fruits like raisins, later currants and citrus with orange and grapefruit. The wood is roasted with dark chocolate, mocha and nuts, later caramel, a bit spicy. Some tannins could be tasted, waxy. With resting, vegetal notes are more intense with tea, eucalyptus. 8,3:The finish is medium long, dry, earthy and tannic, some new, tasty notes join the game, with an intention to round the rum like marzipan, toffee, confectionery and cherry...
Review by Basti
The nose brings many fruity notes, especially apricot/peach. Along with vanilla, caramel, spices. On the palate, it lacks some power/intensity. Finish is also relatively short. Overall very round and easy to drink. I like it a lot.
Review by Vincent D
I first thought of a TDL. Very pleasant nose of caramel, fruits, leather. It seems very light. On the palate, you gain intensity but it remains very controlled. Caramel again, very woody, vanilla. The fruits are there too. Finish with a very slight bitterness very pleasant. Then a slight menthol sensation. Very nice rum! Edit: tasted again and still so much pleasure with this superb bottle.
Review by Tim
Hidden champion! Very good, through and through. Super harmonious and round overall picture in nose, mouth and finish. Strong on the fruity and roasted chocolate side. Caramel, vanilla, wood. For many a standard profile, but for me the best profile when done well. And here it is well done. Just a few more percent would have been nice.

Rum Advent calendar No.9 2023 Taste: strong notes of wood, quite dry, pleasant sweetness (vanilla?), fruity, alcohol tingles strongly on the tip of the tongue, would say under 55% and probably older than 10 years with tropical aging. Solid rum that personally tastes wonderful to me as an easy sipper but lacks complexity and intensity.
Review by Ondra RumRunner
Grays New Grove Emotion 1969 is an exceptional rum from Mauritius, showcasing a harmony of fruity and spicy notes with pronounced chocolate and coffee undertones. The nose reveals caramel, dried fruits, vanilla, and roasted nuts, complemented by a subtle citrus touch. The palate is complex and woody, with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, and spices. The finish is rich, long, and well-balanced.
Review by Frank
Against the Single Cask and Savoir Fair, this one falls short... Nose: Reserved and not so intrusive, but just as nice towards tropical fruits and spicy pastries. Passion fruit and coconut with lots of gooseberry. A bit of nutmeg and clove. Fruit bread and toffee. Slight lovage or licorice. Nice New Grove profile. 8.2 Palate: Slightly different though. At first tropical fruits again, passion fruit and coconut. But then something slightly bacon-nutty-metallic comes in. Pecan. And chamomile and green tea. Not such a flavor bomb, but I like this slight baconiness. 8.4

Combines maturity, elegance, and drinkability in an interesting way. Dried fruits, vanilla, oak wood, coffee, and fine spices are harmoniously integrated and never feel overwhelming. Not a rum with extreme intensity, but one that impresses through balance and depth.

A worthy winner of my tasting today to close out the year. Very balanced, mild, some fruit and caraway. A few more percent would have done it good. Still a tasty rum that I like.

RumX Advent 9.12.23 Minty fruity affair. Absolute surprise. I like it very much.
Review by TheJackDrop
Tasted at the Rhum Fest Paris, partial notes. One of my 5 favorites at the festival (with Savanna 15 years and Carnival white, without hesitation). I would really like to have a small sample to spend more time with it at home. For me it had everything, complexity, balance, indulgence, red fruits, menthol, citrus, in short, superb! Edit; tasted again in sample at home, only weak point the texture is too watery.
Review by JFehr
Really nice mint note. Just find it a bit too sweet and a few more percent would do it good.
Review by Boletus
A very elegant Grays, which has a successful balance between ripe oak influence and lovely fruit aromas. The natural basic sweetness and smooth texture of the rum are also very nice. Unfortunately, due to the rather low alcohol strength, the fine finish is a bit too short.

RumX Advent calendar 2023 Smells like a Foursquare, but it’s not. Without Gunnar’s help, I would never have guessed Mauritius. A good rum. I’m finally going to try one sample after another from Gunnar’s splits.
Review by Michael Schillheim
Despite the low alcohol content, the rum has body and depth on the nose and palate. Nicely balanced. Spiciness and wood, citrus fruits and dark chocolate. In the aftertaste a slight mint note.
Review by Mentalo
Very fruity blend with a nice spice and wood note. Pleasant sweetness and not too watery at "only" 47%. It lacks depth and complexity, but with its peach iced tea note, I still liked it.

RumX Advent calendar 2023 Day 9
Review by Rado Vito
This is very complex rum and I could drink it all day long. Smell is pleasent, fruity with spice, you would expect younger rum. Taste is intense and it have a big range of flavours - spice, fruits, chocolate, wood - every time you drink it, you find something else. Price is also positive and 10% of the rum from 1969 is something special. Buy a bottle, because the next oldest rum this destillary have is from 1991. There won’t be “older” rum anymore.

#24DaysOfRum2023 - Day 9 Opens with an accessible, fruity profile rich in lovely aromas of blackberry, dried fruits and red rhubarb. The nose is woody and spiced, but everything is masterfully balanced by lighter notes of cappuccino, marzipan and crème fraîche. All in all quite flat, but with constant agitation a more recognisable Mauritian profile appears with more aromatic depth and a wonderful flowery heart. Not exactly what I expected, but also not bad. Clearly very old in the mouth. Despite being bottled at ‘only 47%’ the wood is discernably present. Starts with more dried fruits, before sliding into a creamy/burnt sugar sweetness. Perhaps there’s even a hint of passionfruit. Foremost it’s woody. It’s spicy. It’s rich in malty notes. But unfortunately it’s just ever so slightly too thin for my liking. It’s already quite good, but we’re left to wonder what this would be like at >5% more ABV. The finish is too short to be truly enjoyable. Primarily woody with a bit of sweetness.
Review by Andi
Addendum: Tasting No. 2Really exciting and very aromatic rum, dark chocolate, coffee and mocha flavors paired with wood and a hint of menthol in the finish.

RumX Calendar Day 9: Great rum, complex profile that lacks a little power. Great introduction to Mauritius, makes you want more!
Review by Chrischi78
Thanks to Gunnar for the opportunity to split. A really great Grays with the typical Grays note. On the nose already fine notes of dark fruits (plum), wood and sweetness. The taste then does not disappoint at all, red fruits (blackcurrant?) and dark wood, pleasant drinking strength. Really a great rum and now on my wish list! After all, Christmas is coming soon!!
Review by Schnubbii
Great, typical Grays nose. On the palate very smooth, yet complex and easy to drink, alcohol well integrated. Yes, a very tasty piece with the typical Grays aroma profile. Flavor-wise almost a bit shy and not as intense as other Grays releases, finish also not particularly long. I don't necessarily perceive the high age. Still a good drop. Thanks to Gunnar for the sample!
Review by Djehey
Profile without surprise but very pleasant: it goes down easily :) Rather dark, we are on a nice compote of fruits. The spicy notes bring a bit of depth. Balanced, full-bodied, cocoa/coffee aromas complete it all. In my opinion, it lacks a bit of liveliness and complexity.
Review by Mopar Rules
inspired by @kevin Soerensen tasting note of the same day I realized that I haven’t done my notes. So I grabbed the bottle from my shelf and poured a glass. And Kevin is right with his above average rating. It’s a very good rum, subtle, smooth and very balanced. It matches the expectations of the nose on the palate and has a warm, medium to long finish. Yellow fruits, caramel, fruit bread, vanilla, a lovely rum.

Amazingly fruity and complex, very successful blend

#1 ISS: rather shy on the nose, soft and sweet fruity. On the palate, it's much more gourmand, round and delicious! A real bonbon with a spicy undertone that lingers in the finish. A good little rum ❤

RX Advent calendar day 9 Smells like a Foursquare, after a while tastes like a soft TDL. A nice sipper.
Review by Simon Leroux
Far from bad, but not at the level of a world's best rum at all.
Review by Rowald Sweet Empire
Engaging and very interesting nose/taste. Complex. lots of Coffee flavours. Tabacco. Spices (cloves/cinnamon). A mix of 1979 to 2008 vintages. So you've got all those woody aged flavours with a bit of that signature New Grove freshness (Eucalyptus/Agricole style). You need to give it some time, but I find this a beautiful rum. Can't stop smelling my glass.

08/11/2025: tasted @ Spirits In The Sky 2025. This is an awesome New Grove! I tasted it next to the new Inception, and I liked this one slightly better. This rum still has a lot of flavor and body despite the lower ABV. Recommended.

RumX Advent calendar No. 9: Light sweetness on the nose and finish. Alcohol perfectly integrated. Also very fruity notes and vanilla.

I had the chance to taste the New Grove Emotion 1969 directly in Mauritius together with the Master Distiller – an unforgettable experience. The rum impresses with its depth and complexity that you feel immediately. Rich aromas of dried fruits, dark chocolate and fine spices unfold with every sip. Especially noteworthy is the pronounced, wonderful wood note that gives this rum a special depth. The balance between sweetness, spice and wood is simply perfect. I was so impressed that I had to take a bottle home with me. One of my favorite rums that perfectly embodies the long tradition and skill of the New Grove distillery.

RumX Advent calendar 09.12.23: One thing upfront: I really like today's rum. Esters, but not too many, wood, fruit and some tar with a nice, restrained sweetness in very good balance. Intensity is good, without the alcohol bothering. Color and maturity suggest >10 years tropical aging, alcohol <60% (though I've often guessed wrong on this in recent days). For me, the candidates are Clarendon, Long Pond and St.Lucia. To give outsiders a chance, and because the combination of aromas fits very well with the Vendome still, St.Lucia is my tip for today. In any case, awesome stuff! Definitely very positively surprised, I wouldn't have expected a rum of this quality from Mauritius. If only it were still available at cask strength...
Review by Lot-NAS
Calendar #9 At first, I thought it was a very old Agricole, at least from the nose. After a good hour in the glass, that impression completely disappeared and Barbados was the next idea. Taste-wise, it's too harsh and spicy for me. I also can't really place the herbs. I just had TDL in another glass and can't really compare them either, as mint notes, rubber, or something else typical are completely missing and the drop is a bit too sweet. I'm puzzled.
Review by Rumeumel
Very pleasant drop. Typical menthol from Mauritius, combined with dried fruits and chocolate. Balanced and smooth, very pleasant to drink. Well integrated alcohol. Not a complex monster, but rather a little charmer. For under 140,- I think it's good value for money. Actually feels like someone blended a very good Foursquare with a TDL. Here I find the mint/menthol very pleasant.
Review by Léo Delek
I had mixed feedback but wow, this is so good. I get a lot of exotic fruits and it leans a bit towards pure juice. I also get a lot of spices (cinnamon, ...) and resinous notes reminding that it's still molasses, it's very indulgent.

Read full review ›This rum is truly exceptional in composition, taste, and production. On the other hand, we can't compare it to 50-year-old rums or 30-year-old rums, for example from Appleton; besides a completely different flavor profile, this simply isn't a 50-year-old rum. Its price of 3,900 CZK is definitely not the lowest, but after tasting and seeing it – in my opinion, it's a rum that deserves a price up to 4,000 CZK.
