Schotman's Barrel Selection MaCane Rum 2021
Curious drinkers who chase odd experiments will get the most out of this one — a Cuban molasses rum fermented open for six months, which is as unusual as it sounds. Overripe tropical fruit, pineapple and refined esters lead the nose, more "florett than broadsword" as one member put it. The palate turns spicy and hot, with allspice, pepper and young oak taking over. At 57% it's edgy.

How does Schotman's Barrel Selection MaCane Rum 2021 taste?
From community reviews · summarized with AI
Fermented-long Cuban with fine esters and hot spice A polarizing experiment most tasters respect more than adore — the esters intrigue, but the spicy, chili-like heat dominates the finish and buries the fruit for many.

On the nose, esters show themselves, which I perceive much more delicately. If Hampden esters are rather a broadsword, here I have a foil in hand. Ripe tropical fruits, floral notes and a slight sharpness that reminds me of a spice mix of pepper, curry and allspice. Added to that is a fine honey sweetness as well as young wood. On the palate, the foil disappears – here it gets edgier. The alcohol is now clearly noticeable, the sharpness from the nose intensifies. The honey blends with the tropical fruits, while spices and alcohol increasingly take the lead. Floral and fruity notes recede, the young wood remains present on the tongue. In the aftertaste, the MaCane plays almost exclusively on the keyboard of spices. Here the sharp side of the force shows itself, more towards chili. Not unpleasant, but very dominant and long overshadowing everything else. When the sharpness finally fades, a warm mouthfeel spreads; a hint of wood remains.

Tasted at the German Rum Festival in Berlin. A Cuban rum with an incredibly long fermentation if I understood correctly. We're talking about 6 months of fermentation! A powerful, fermented nose. Not a Cuban nose, very ripe tropical fruits and esters. The mouth is similar to the nose, a bit fuller and alcoholic. The very ripe fruits first, then tamed esters. The finish is rather long, with a nice acidity and still the overripe tropical fruits.

Bottle Market Bremen December 2025. Here we go with this Schotman's. Fruity nose, also tropical fruits are recognizable, also very mineral. On the palate also very fruity, plus some caramel and slightly alcoholic.

#7231 29.08.2026 Tasted at the German Rum Festival 2026. Also a pretty decent release that has a nice fruity kick to it. My quick notes while tasting. Overripe fruits, funk, sugarcane, woody, herbs, ester, molasses.

Nose: a very pleasant mix of overripe tropical fruits and pastry notes. Also some (Christmas) spices can be detected that I can’t name more precisely. Definitely clear similarities to Jamaica. However, this rum feels more delicate. Taste: again very fruity. Also a slight sweetness and wood notes present. Slightly spicy. The alcohol is noticeable. Also definitely some taste similarities to Jamaica, though a bit lighter. Unfortunately, it can’t keep up with the nose. A very exciting project. Unfortunately, the rum can’t match the really beautiful nose in taste. Still, I’m happy to have a bottle and to try it again soon.

Schotman Macane - a crazy experiment, just my taste! Fermented for 6 months in beautiful Achterhoek (must be nice ;-) ), that's something new! When opening the bottle, the first thing that hits the nose is - of course - esters. Something like Jamaica, Hampden. Not quite high ester, maybe a bit towards <>H. On closer sniffing, the impression is confirmed: esters, fermented fruits, pineapple and banana and maybe some papaya. Also something mineral that I can't quite place. At the back, some young wood and also some spiciness. Allspice, pepper and a slight sharpness, but not from the alcohol. A bit different on the palate: here you also find Hampden-like esters, but they are less prominent than on the nose and instead dark berries and even more spices take the lead. The sharpness is now even more dominant and the alcohol is at least noticeable. Along with all that, there are also light caramel and vanilla notes, reminiscent of butterscotch. The finish then becomes very Jamaican again: meaty-smoky, some espresso and tobacco and again some allspice. All in all, a really exciting experiment, which of course is not yet top tier, but it's only batch 1 of this experiment series. Despite the young age, we have an exciting rum here that makes you want more. Let's see where the journey goes and how the next batches react to possibly different seasonal conditions!

Cuban molasses fermented open for 6 months in Holland. You have to be crazy or just Eric Schotman to try something like this. You just have to try it. Tropical aromas like from the Caribbean immediately make you mentally drift away. There's a lot going on that you first have to grasp. There's also an earthy side. On the palate, a lot of spice comes through. A bit of ginger heat, fruits are less present. With time, chamomile tea appears for me. The slightly earthy undertone remains on the palate and contributes to the unique character of this rum. It's really hard to find a rating here. So: Chapeau Eric. It works even without peat 😜
