Cask strength but tamed by five years in the tropics — sugarcane, honey and briny olive up front, herbs and ginger behind, with a meaty, faintly smoky edge from the wood. #6765 08.05.2026 Relaxing with some evening samples while listening to som enice Psy Trance tracks on Spotify. Price to quality is really good onthis one in my mind. A nice and very fresh profile with herbs, sugarcane, honey, floral notes and cinnamon.

For me, Clairin almost always gets a BBQ-like note from the cask influence, as it does here. The fruity aroma is pretty much overshadowed by the single malt cask and leans more towards BBQ sauce and intense herbal and smoky notes. Salty, spicy, and herbal probably describe it best, I think. I actually prefer the fruity unaged Clairins without cask aging. The single malt cask really wasn’t necessary. The DNA gets lost too much here for my taste.

Sajous is aging and seems to improve with time. The nose makes a good impression by finding a balance between fresh and vegetal notes (olive, herbs, sugarcane), fruits (berries, citrus), spicy and woody nuances, and more empyreumatic and medicinal accents. The whole is pleasant, well-structured, and creates a good harmony. The balance of the nose is found on the palate. Behind this elegant and diverse profile are more pronounced empyreumatic flavors (meat, smoke, tar), herbal notes, and a rich sugarcane juice, but also spices and medicinal nuances. Banana joins the berries and citrus, offering a multitude of flavors to explore. The profile seems to have gained complexity and breadth compared to previous bottlings. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish doesn’t bring any real change; we find this vegetal, medicinal, then smoky, meaty, and fruity mix that lingers for a long time on the palate. A skillfully crafted old clairin that impresses. The value for money is very honest.

Little VSGB Haitian cross tasting. All three clearly share the same dna, while the vintages show quite significant differences. All of them are very intense and water heavy with: 2018 Fruits and pastries with marzipan 2019 much more vegetal and harsher compared to the other two. 2020 vegetal with red berries For me 2018 > 2020 > 2019

Delicious aroma of vanilla and olives. Very fresh, citrus and caramel also come through well. On the palate, I definitely taste the banana with ginger. Citrus, spices, and woody notes also come through. The finish is average with notes of citrus, wood, and spices. A tasty rum with the kick of ginger. ;-)

I have to say that I somehow like this Vieux Sajous more and more each year. The first ones were a bit wild, but this one is a bit rounder. Would gladly leave it in the barrel for a few more years.

Thanks to the VSGB group, I had the chance to try this one, otherwise, I wouldn’t have bought a bottle. From nose to finish, it’s a classic aged clairin profile: sugarcane mingled with a lot of wood, meaty, fresh, herbs, and subtle smoke. Water brings out a dominant peat note on the palate. Overall, it doesn’t quite knock my socks off.

A successful bottling by Velier. Tasted twice in sample, in a lineup and alone. For me, it's a rum that asks to be tamed. Lots of aromas. The first sips can seem a bit complicated at first with the spicy and ginger side. But a nice evolution towards an equally nice finish.

Nice and fresh rum: honeydew melon, yellow fruits, a bit of herbs, sugarcane. Overall very pleasant and the alcohol is well integrated. Medium-long finish. Really well done bottling!!

First tasting of Haitian rums, I am pleasantly surprised. The nose is very floral, on the palate these floral notes blend with tropical fruits with a slightly smoky background leaning towards leather.

For me, the Vieux Sajous 2019 is still the best - but everyone can decide that for themselves. The new one brings the typical aromas and character traits, grassy notes with lots of spice. That bothers me a bit about the current edition, it comes less mineral and dry - rather spicy-meaty, thus sweeter. Also, the label is now colored. I liked it better monochrome.

A battle? No, a marriage of typical Clairin notes (especially Sajous). Full-bodied, medicinal, yet fruity, with more gourmand notes of vanilla & caramel. A rum that seems to be enjoyed with disconcerting ease, and renewed pleasure! Lacks a bit of punch to create a wow effect, it's almost "too simple".

I find these bottlings right up my alley, and the older they get, the more I like them. A nice drink, and I consider it better than many others with more hype, but in the end, impressions are very personal. In the glass, it shows a beautiful color and is quite viscous despite its young aging. On the nose, it’s very perfumed, and the longer it sits, the more it opens up with new notes. I tasted it with two different glasses to get a broader judgment. On the palate, it’s wilder at first but becomes very pleasant to drink over time. Medium-long finish. Great drink, I find it in line with my tastes. The fruity and citrusy note is much more balanced in this bottling compared to 2019 and it’s more drinkable than previous vintages. The more time passes, the easier it is to drink—nice rum!

Whisky Live Paris 2025 - to be tasted again to confirm the score and notes. This aged Sajous keeps surprising me year after year. The profile, a distincitve one, is pretty much the same of the previous releases, making this a good dram. Sugarcane is there along with some honey and vanilla sweetness, plus some herbal notes and a slight influence from the cask.

22/07/2026: sample tasting @ home. A tasty, fresh profile that is enjoyable to sip neat. Not a wild beast of a Clairin anymore, but rather well balanced due to the 5 years of tropical aging. Price to quality is pretty good with this one.

First impression: classic, very good Sajous! Doesn't break the mold compared to its predecessors. Comes around a bit creamier. But also edgy and fresh. Simply my favorite Haitian distiller... even if not quite as strong as the predecessors.

I love this nose. I love this rum. Just like the white Sajous that I really enjoyed and which is a bomb of creaminess. A nose that mixes banana, melon, apricot, peach, cane, all on a very original pile of hay that works really well. A palate in complete coherence, I find almost all the markers from the nose which, in my experience of about a hundred tastings, is quite rare and worth noting. This rum is very classy and despite a certain complexity knows how to stay simple. I could drink it every day.

Gave this rum a try at Bar 1802. Nose immediately matches with Haitian Clairin. This is purely subjective and we have different noses but I feel like smelling dairy products in Clairin, something that could be like curdled milk to be exact. Quite unusual, I feel like sensing raw meat here. Along come some other scents which includes honeyed notes, olive, vanilla, wood, roasted, ginger, chili... We can find most of them during the whole tasting, from nose to finish, which is medium to long. Had a good Time sipping this one, it's a really good rum.

Very full and complex nose. Spicy-fruity on the palate with a lot of power, but well integrated. Since Sajous is the name of the distiller and not a brand itself, the differences between the spirits are huge, but that also keeps it exciting. Definitely one of the best from him so far for me.
