Nose: lots of esters, slightly sharp, glue, fruity sweetness, Palate: like the nose, plus barrel, roasted notes, quite alcoholic and sharp-edged, alcohol about 65% Finish: slightly bitter (oak), dry, fruity Very good, young, intense ester-heavy rum that, despite the clearly noticeable barrel influence, hasn’t lost its horns yet. I would assign the esters more to Mhoba than Jamaica (Hampden), the bitterness is also not typical for Hampden – there I’d expect more green olives. Conclusion: Yup, Mhoba, after three rums from the South African distillery within a few days, I should recognize the profile!

Esters, fruit, wood and a biting alcohol. Overall, you find this on the nose and then on the palate. It's good but the alcohol is too present and everything is a bit too harsh and lacks finesse in my opinion.

Satara: Glue, sweet, wet warm wood, fruit wrapped in candied cream, good Mhoba, but nothing extraordinary. Slightly earthy in the finish. Suzuka: Much darker and more astringent, dark fruity, very warm and oily on the palate. Reminds me a lot of the Kirsch, which I really appreciate. Letaba. Wow! Moist bomb, also very warm and oily on the palate. More complex than the other two. Awesome stuff!

#5732 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. I just like Mhoba because they try all kinds of stuff and they mostly succeed. This one is also pretty good with lots of fruit and light ester. Wood and ABV are in very good balance.

And on we go watching the Tour de France. Hopefully a more exciting stage than yesterday, at least as far as the favorites are concerned. Next awesome Mhoba. Nice esters, polish and glue, as well as some fruit are also noticeable.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025. A vegetal and woody nose, fruity and esterified with quite a lot of somewhat rustic spices and dry herbs. The palate is lively, alcoholic, rustic, woody, spicy with vegetal and dry herbs. The finish is quite long but, like the whole rum, a bit rough around the edges. It should be added that Mhoba has improved a lot recently in this regard. I preferred the bourbon finish of this rum to the brandy finish of the Skukuza even if the alcohol is a bit too marked on the first sip.

WLP 2025 tasting. I remember an esterified and empyreumatic cane juice like Mhoba knows how to do. 👃 Sugarcane ester, the Bourbon barrel brings typical spices (pepper, vanilla) and caramel (sugar cooked in the pan). I get candied citrus, almost overcooked. Menthol freshness, burnt rubber, a bit of wood glue. 😋 Alcohol liveliness (maybe a bit too much?), chili, melted licorice, tamarind candy, roasted oilseeds, sugarcane jam, vanilla, fresh and vegetal side of the cane. ⛳ Powerful, tasty and fresh expression. Spicy burnt wood, cooked fruits. 📝 Re-tasted at Rhum Fest 2026, same feedback, quite alcoholic and powerful despite many previous tastings. Not at the same level as the recent very good Mhoba selected by TWJ or my reference at Mhoba, the French cask LMDW 221FC1.

Tasted at Rhumfest Paris 2026 with the Skukuza. I prefer the Satara because I find it more indulgent. The woodiness is beautifully controlled, I find a nice fruitiness, brown sugar bordering on caramel, soft spices. A bottle I could buy.

On aeration, sugarcane is vegetal, green fruits and pineapple arise, some are candied, baked apple, pastry, balanced. 8,7:On the palate, the attack is fresh with sugarcane honey, sweet, vegetal, green, flowery, herbaceous, candied with licorice, fruity with fermented tropical, green, yellow and citrus fruits, dairy notes, as the wood is roasted with caramel, pastry, nuts, oily, spicy with allspice, vanilla, anise, medicinal with rubber, polish. 8,6:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, with roasted wood notes, spicy, smoky, nutty, warm, sugarcane is fresh, candied, vegetal with briny olive, oily, fruity with peaches, grapes, citrus fruits..

3rd Mhoba release from 2025 and last one for the night. On the nose: Esters, woody notes, overripe fruity notes and spicy notes like from the barrel in the background. Taste: Woody and alcoholic at first. Fruity. Light glue. Then the mouthfeel changes oily and you get light allspice notes and some vegetal notes. Finish: Woody, spicy, olive notes and light citrus notes. This one was the weakest one of the Mhoba's 2025 releases and biggest reason is that its alcoholic and the overall palate was not on the level of other 2025 releases.

I really like this bottling from Mhoba. An excellent balance of fruit, wood, and esters. On the palate it has a nice oiliness and perfectly integrated alcohol. This continues seamlessly into the finish... Wonderful.

Small MHOBA tasting: a pleasantly fresh mix of citrus fruits, wood, and a wild spice cabinet. On the nose, the esters are still clearly recognizable, but on the palate they are overlaid by very present alcohol which unfortunately causes deductions.

Delicious sweet and woody notes on the nose. Overripe fruit, dry herbs, flowers, and esters. The typical MHOBA aroma, but less full-bodied than the Letaba. On the palate, again, the delicious overripe pineapple and banana. But also less present. The ester content and sharpness are more pronounced in this one. The finish reveals peach and iced tea, ending in dryness and a touch of olive. Overall, I find this one weaker than the Letaba. But still very good.

We're at Mhoba, so it's not very refined. You take the suitcase of pure cane esters and kick the door in. The bourbon aging on this one is quite marked but I found it worked well. It rounds the rum to make it a bit easier, less aggressive and I rather liked it. Will try again more calmly.

Classic Mhoba nose, quite fruity-banana-like. Slightly reminds me of a Worthy Park. Delicious! Fruity, slightly woody, limited complexity, but pretty easy to drink. Yeah, this one tastes good. In the finish, slight hints of honey.

Mhoba Satara – 64.6% The Mhoba Satara, also named after a Rest Camp in Kruger Park, aged 50 months in a Woodford Reserve bourbon barrel. Bottled Brut de Fût at 64.6%, limited to 282 bottles. Here, the sweetness of the brandy is gone: the esters fully express themselves on the palate, with a longer and more pronounced finish.

Nose: open the esters, glue, solvents, some metallic note. Oak barrel, vanilla, ginger, white pepper. Orange peels, kumquat, pear, apples & quince. Little bit of candied fruits & some brine, vegetables. Palate: Bright, juicy, intense. Sugarcane juice, esters, spices, honey, syrup. Fresh tropical fruits, vanilla, oak, little bit of citrus. Great, it's very tasty. Aftertaste: long. Delicate esters, woody notes, ripe tropical fruits sugarcane juice, some candies, banana, peaches. Conclusion: this one little bit aggressive, so you need give a time to breathe, and better add a water. But, then you can feel this amazing style & fabulous dynamic of taste. Really wonderful. Highly recommend.
