Sip this one neat, with a few drops of water to tame the 64.1% — it's a sipper, not a mixer. The nose hits with esters, glue and solvent, then fresh sugarcane, cherry wood and dried fruit. The palate turns charred and spicy: oak, espresso, dark chocolate over a vegetal agricole base. A few tasters felt the wood crowds the fruit and the palate falls a bit flat after that huge nose.

Satara: Glue, sweet, wet warm wood, fruit wrapped in rock candy cream, good Mhoba, but nothing extraordinary. Slightly earthy on the finish. Suzuka: Much darker and more astringent, dark fruity, very warm and oily on the palate. Reminds me a lot of the cherry, which I really appreciate. Letaba. Wow! Moist bomb, also very warm and oily on the palate. More complex than the other two. Awesome stuff!

Im Glas sehr dunkel mit schönen Schlieren an der Glaswand. Nase: recht verdeckt, rote Früchte, Würze, sehr rund Bisher keine Idee zum Rum Gaumen: hmm, außer sehr rund, rote Früchte und Fass kommt nix neues hinzu, kein Marker der mir einen Hinweis gibt. Alkohol ca. 50% Nachklang: Würze und Röstnoten, verblasst schnell Wertung: gerade so sehr gut, aber ohne Besonderheiten, ich tippe auf einen Rum im spanischen Stil Auflösung: Mhoba! Hier ist vom sonnst präsenten Funk erstaunlicherweise fast nichts übrig! Sobald ich es weiß, meine ich es sich zu schmecken 🙃

#5733 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. Yet another nice bottling they were hiding under the desk and you had to ask for :-) Also fruity, medium intense with nice wood and ABV balance. There are some nice chocolate and anise notes in the profile.

Und weiter geht es mit Tour de France schauen. Heute hoffentlich eine spannender Etappe als gestern, was die Favoriten angeht. Und als nächstes einen richtigen top Mhoba. Ester gut erkennbar, aber auch etwas Banane und Ananas.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025. A vegetal and woody nose, fruity (pineapple) and esterified with quite a bit of rustic spices. The palate is lively, rustic, woody, spicy with vegetal notes and dry herbs. The finish is fairly long but, like the whole rum, a bit rough around the edges. It should be added that Mhoba has improved a lot in this regard recently.

The nose of this Mhoba is once again almost on par with a Hampden... consistently magnificent. On the palate, the spicy-woody aromas dominate here with subtle fruit and plant notes. Ester is, of course, also present. The finish clearly stays in the woody/spicy realm.

Tasted at Rhumfest Paris 2025 with the Satara. I found it less "extreme" and less esterified than some Mhoba. There is quite interesting aging work, it keeps a certain depth. Woodier than the Satara.

Another Mhoba release from 2025. This one was also in the glass for a good 30 minutes before the review. On the nose: Woody notes, light esters, light pineapple notes. Light vegetal note in the background. Once the rum opens up you get some fruity brandy cask notes notes in the background like light pear, light apples. Taste: Spicy notes, woody notes. I get fruity notes like pineapple, sour apples, light pear. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy. It gets darker in the end with light chocolate notes and there is some vegetal notes also in the background. 65% abv is again integrated very well. Finish: Warm, woody, vegetal notes and anise note. Light oily and dry mouthfeel. Medium finish. I really liked this one, but the overall palate doesn't really reach to higher level maybe because the notes were lacking just a little bit of power.

On aeration, raisins, citrus fruits and banana arise, dairy hints, pastry, caramel and burnt sugar, nuts and vanilla, some rubber. 8,4:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, polish, oily with briny olive, fresh, sweet with honeycomb, fruity with overripe tropical fruits like banana and pineapple, citrus fruits, prunes, raisins, dried dates, as the wood is toasted with pastry, burnt sugar, chocolate, roasted nuts, spicy with anise, vanilla, allspice, slightly resinous, creamy, barrel impact is obvious. 8,5:The finish is long, dry&tannic, fruity with tropical, citrus and dried fruits, medicinal, molasses is vegetal with eucalyptus, sweet with honeycomb, dark with licorice, as the wood is toasted with nuts, coffee, spicy with anise, resinous..

Another delicious Mhoba of excellent quality. Delightfully floral on the nose. The typical fruity notes of pineapple and banana mixed with citrus and woody spices are very recognizable on the palate. A nice, warm, long finish where the spices and vegetal notes come to the fore together with banana. Esters are well present here. A tasty rum.

Small MHOBA tasting: like the Satara, a good mix of (citrus) fruits, wood, and spices. Esters can also be detected on the palate. The alcohol is much better integrated and by no means disturbing.

We're at Mhoba, so it's not very refined. You take the suitcase of esters pure cane juice and kick the door in. This one is rounded for a brandy cask. A nice ensemble but it didn't convince me that much. To taste more calmly.

Un nez très doux malgré les 64%. Boisé, esterisé et chocolaté. C'est gourmand. Des notes végétales. En bouche, on a d'abord des esters et du bois et du piment. Puis de la banane et des notes pâtissières. Fort mais alcool joliment intégré. Finale longue qui apporte une note de café. Pas les profils que j'aime le plus mais c'est objectivement un rhum bien fait.

An der Nase klassisch Mhoba, etwas weniger Fruchtigkeit als der Satara. Ordentlich Klebstoff trotz einiger Zeit an der Luft. Dieser Mhoba geht am Gaumen eher in die Honig/Steppengras Richtung. Auch dieser keine Komplexitätsmonster, aber ein richtig schöner runder Sipper. Macht Spaß, ohne zu überfordern.

I love Mhoba. Perhaps, the most unique rum. This one, have a lot esters. Nose: very bright & intense. First one esters punch, little bit alcoholic. Glue, polish, solvent. Then comes woody notes: fruit wood resin, cherry wood, touch of leather. Some spices, like cinnamon, nutmeg & baking spices. Under this all, we found the fresh agricole notes & dry fruits, like sultanas, prunes, dry apricots & dry mango. And finally sweet notes of buckwheat honey & cola. Palate: OK, it's 64,1% abv, so maybe you need few drops of water. Very rich & intense, full bodied, strong but velvety taste. Esters meeting you :) But soon you found rich taste of charred oak, woody, spices, espresso notes, dark chocolate, burnt sugar & leather. After that, you feeling agricole base, dry fruits, like raisins, apricots, prunes & hint of cola. Aftertaste: long, really long, warm & dry. Combination of wood, spices, fruits, coffee & esters. And minor touch of eucalypt. Conclusion: definitely amazing & complex rum. The most rare combination between fresh sugarcane juice & high level of esters. Maybe, too much oak , but it's still very tasty ❤️ One rule: if you see the Mhoba – buy it ! 😋

Mhoba Skukuza – 64.1% Named after a Rest Camp in Kruger Park, the Mhoba Skukuza benefits from an original aging: 36 months in American oak barrels that held a South African whisky, followed by 11 months finishing in brandy barrels from Van Ryn’s distillery (founded in 1845 in Cape Town). Bottled at 64.1%, only 381 bottles. An expressive nose on esters, but a more restrained palate and a rather short finish.
