Velier Nine Leaves Sherry Pedro Ximénez 2020

Opinions land all over the place here. Fans of PX finishes get raisins, nuts and a creamy sweetness they enjoy, while plenty of drinkers feel the sherry buries what makes Nine Leaves special — the sake-like fermented tang and floral, vegetal core. Underneath sit dried fruit, spice and a faint agricole grassiness. One taster nailed it: "someone love it, someone hate it."

How does Velier Nine Leaves Sherry Pedro Ximénez 2020 taste?

From community reviews · summarized with AI

Sherry-heavy Japanese rum, polarizing A genuine love-it-or-hate-it Japanese pot-still. The PX cask brings raisins and sweetness, but many feel it smothers the sake-funk that fans come to Nine Leaves for.

Beautiful, dark Nine Leaves nose. I really like it! On the palate, great harmony with the PX sherry influence. Raisins, pleasant sweetness, and creaminess. If you like PX finishes, you'll really enjoy this one.

#5715 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. Another big disappointment in my mind. This one a bit more vegetal and light mint, but still spicy on the palate with some anise and honey. There is a peppery note on the palate as well.

Good thing I drank most of it yesterday :-) It's definitely a seriously vegetal one. There's a bit of sake and also sherry that's slightly noticeable, but it's mostly floral.

Oh man, what's up with Velier and Nine Leaves? It's nice that there are such great labels, but these are by far probably the best. The first releases didn't grab me, but this bottling is unfortunately even more disappointing. Sherry times 10! Finish me off.

Nine Leaves DNA is similar to the Armagnac finish, but with more herbs and more raisin and sherry influence. The alcohol is a bit better integrated than in the Armagnac cask, which is naturally due to the sweetness from the sherry finish. Nice thing, but the Armagnac finish appeals to me more because it is "purer."

It's clear that the former owner enjoyed experimenting with different barrels, but here we discover that sherry is not the best combination. It takes up quite a bit of space on the nose with dried fruit (raisins), spicy wood, and nuts. While it adds a little mellowness to an otherwise subdued local profile (sugar cane, pepper, sake, herbs), it's far from saving it. The palate makes the same somewhat disappointing observation. A little sugar (caramel, cane), quite a bit of sherry heaviness (raisins, prunes, nuts, chili pepper), a pinch of herbaceous flavors and Sichuan pepper, and that's it. The alchemy of the aromas doesn't work; it's rather dull and unstructured, with little depth. The alcohol is decently integrated. The finish is dry, thin, and unconvincing. Citrus, dried fruit, a hint of sherry alcohol, and pepper make up most of what you can taste, but overall it clearly falls flat. Certainly not the most convincing rum of the bunch, and it's hard to justify the price tag for this one.

I immediately recognize it as a Nine Leaves, but unlike many others I've already tasted, from the very first sip it was gentler and with less kick. The finish in ex-sherry PX gives it more color than a distinctive trait; you feel it a bit at the start, but after a while the distinctive sake character emerges, the one that sets all Nine Leaves apart, slightly acidic notes and unique yeasts. I find it just a bit gentle but overall it's very balanced both on the nose and the palate. In the glass, it's quite viscous; on the nose, it's well-defined with floral tones and sherry at first, with light spicy hints; on the palate, a bit sharp and you really feel the sake aftertaste, but I don't mind it. After about half an hour, it's milder; the finish is long and warm; I'd say overall it's a different kind of drink like the releases from the same distillery—you either love them or hate them. Purely my personal opinion

Tasted at Whisky Live Warsaw 2026. First time with Nine Leaves, it has a distinctive flavor profile: spices, floral, dried fruits and raisins. Alcohol is well integrated, overall a quite decent rum, it is to be tried.

Unfortunately not my thing at all. In my opinion, the PX aging is way too dominant: it almost only tastes like sherry, and I barely get any rum notes. Adding water doesn't do it any good, it just makes it even less balanced. I'll have to taste it again soon...

Too much sherry. It crushes the Nine Leaves profile.

This year, I was able to taste the whole lineup, and... unfortunately, it’s not better. The rums are younger (2017 to 2020) and overall even less convincing. The series mainly relies on finishes: 2020 Sherry Pedro Ximénez – 60% and 59%, 2018 Spanish Oak – 59%, 2018 Armagnac Cask – 59%, 2017 Red Wine Cask – 60%. If I had to save one, it would be the 2018 Spanish Oak: a dense, full-bodied finish, with this impression of “chewing a licorice stick.” Interesting, without being transcendent. You clearly feel that this range remains experimental, seeking a balance between the base and the type of aging. But for now, I must admit: I am not the target audience. Tasting rums more than pleasure rums, perfect for a tasting club or a discovery session, but not really bottles I would want to keep in my bar.

I am surprised with these comments and low ratings. It is quite untypical rum flavor and nose (on wine side) but after a while very good sherry note and old furniture tone. Sherry is present all the time so you have to like this style.

I love nine leaves, it's absolutely untipical rum. Nose: Oh, again this character notes of muscovado (dirty sugar, molasses), some cooked vegetables, fermented notes. Lot of wood & sherry, raisins, dates, spices. Yummy 😋 Palate: Oh, it's quite sweet 😅 Rich umami taste, lot of molasses, dry fruits, sherry, nuts, spices. Little bit fudge, on the end. Shadow of agricole notes. Aftertaste: still sweet, sherry dominate. Raisins combined with nuts & spices. But this umami... That's why I love Nine leaves. Something unique. Conclusion: someone love it, someone hate it. For me, little bit to sweet but this umami taste make the Nine Leaves rums so unique. So, personally for me, it's tasty and interesting.
