One member summed up the mood: "Nine leaves is not my top distillery." This 2020 single cask leans hard on its PX sherry finish — raisin, prune and brown sugar over the distillery's floral, sugarcane and yuzu-citrus core, with sake and a light medicinal edge. Several tasters found the Nine Leaves signature buried and the sherry too dominant. Interesting, experimental, but divisive.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025. The sherry is felt on the nose and it brings sweetness. The sake is in the background behind the citrus (yuzu) and yellow fruits. The alcohol is a bit too present on the palate but the impression is complete with quite a few spices. The finish is average with wood and a slightly more marked sake side. The two single casks didn't make a good impression but I preferred the Spanish oak for its better alcohol integration.

Oh man, another really bad thing. I now really suspect that the stuff was not only finished in one barrel, but extra liters of sherry were poured in. For me way too sherry dominant.

#5714 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. I was excited about this release because lats years releases were pretty good. I did get disappointed though because I think the quality dropped quite a bit. Light fruity with some sugarcane, herbal and spice notes. The sake notes are very subtle in the profile. There is also a light medicinal touch in the profile.

The best of this series. Good thing I already drank most of it yesterday :-) Definitely a heavily vegetal piece. A bit of sake and also sherry are slightly recognizable here, but it’s mostly floral.

The Single Cask is better than the Blend from the same vintage with the same aging. The sherry brings its usual heaviness between raisins and prunes, spices, and alcoholic notes. There are also notes of sake, herbaceous notes of sugar cane, a hint of honey, wood, and anise. It is a round and rather rich nose, to be honest. On the palate, the profile continues with influences of sherry, oak, caramel, and vegetal notes. Citrus and sugar cane bring a touch of elegance to this somewhat heavy profile. There are also some medicinal notes. The profile is much better than on the Blend, with more flavors and more richness. The alcohol is fairly well integrated, although its strength is still noticeable. The finish is long and dry but well executed, with dried fruit (raisins) and citrus, brown sugar, roasted, spicy and vegetal notes. The profile is livelier, spicier and more oriental. The profile is already better than what has been produced, but this premium and experimental cuvée is not enough to earn it five stars.

Tasted as a mystic: Something with berries, wine sourness, ash, and wood. Thought it was whiskey (some kind of Edradour or Balvenie) — berry and menthol, wine, citrus and ash notes, sweet and spicy, liqueur, seems quite strong, ashy smoke and thick liqueur with spices on the palate.

Whisky Live Paris trade fair tasting. Impressions and rating are based on immediate impressions from the tasting glass. Unfortunately, a rather flat rum that noticeably benefits from the sherry cask, as the sweetness brings a bit more tension to the profile. Apart from that, only somewhat convincing for me.

One of the poorer Nine Leaves bottlings. The typical Nine Leaves notes are still present, but everything is very flat and the bottling is dominated by the finish. Unfortunately, I also found the alcohol poorly integrated.

This year, I was able to taste the whole lineup, and... unfortunately, it's not better. The rums are younger (2017 to 2020) and, overall, even less convincing. The series mainly relies on finishes: 2020 Sherry Pedro Ximénez – 60% and 59%, 2018 Spanish Oak – 59%, 2018 Armagnac Cask – 59%, 2017 Red Wine Cask – 60%. If I had to save one, it would be the 2018 Spanish Oak: a dense, full-bodied finish, with the impression of "chewing a licorice stick." Interesting, without being transcendent. You can clearly feel that this range remains experimental, seeking a balance between the base and the type of aging. But for now, I must admit: I am not the target audience. Tasting rums more than pleasure rums, perfect for a tasting club or a discovery session, but not really bottles I'd want to keep in my bar.
