"Definitely not a rum for all people," as one taster put it — and that's the honest starting point here. This 20-year Savanna spent a long stretch in cognac casks, and it shows: dried figs, dates, wood and spice up front, with only a faint high-ester Grand Arôme signature arriving at the very end. Dry and astringent, cognac-forward, more woody than fruity. Fans of the funk keep wishing for more.

#5727 28.09.2025 Day two of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. A pretty nice release with a bit of astringency and warmth to the palate. Fruits and floral notes mix very well with the spices and wood.

A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris 2025. Not very pronounced Grand Arôme on the nose, yellow fruit, light smokiness and sweetness. There's a hint of cognac cask and slight volatility. The palate is quite full on entry, then everything fades and dilutes, except for the smokiness, which increases. The volatility becomes slightly spicy. Spice and fruit remain. The finish is fairly long and, strangely enough, the fruit lingers for a long time. Not really a rum for my taste, especially on the second palate with that impression of dilution.

A very interessant GA in my opinion. Doesnt taste like a 100% tropical GA ageing, but like a Cognac GA taste. You can taste/feel the Savanna profile with a lot of cognac influence, woody, spicy, dried & overripe figes/plums/date. Just at the end comes the subtil GA feeling. Definitely not a rum for all people, but very special for a 10y trop + 10y ferrand cask continental ! DRY & ASTRINGENT 💣

A really unusual Savanna. For a Grand Arome, the usual fruit and mint aromas are missing. Instead, there is an enormous amount of cognac influence, lots of wood, a strange smokiness and floral notes that are interesting but overall rather inappropriate. Above that is a very mediocre alcohol integration that significantly spoils the drinking pleasure. Unfortunately, my expectations were not met here. Shame...

WLP 2025 tasting. Tasted after TDL 2000 Itinéraires. I can't find the markers for which Grand Arôme de Savanna is famous. The aromas seem diluted in those of the Cognac cask. Disappointing. 👃&😋 Dried fruits, Cognac aspect (cherry brandy, raisins, dried orange), various spices, sweet caramel and custard, honey, vanilla bean, light chocolate. ⛳ Quite a bit of spice, light rose extract, cane sugar, light varnish, light candied citrus.

8,4:On the nose, roasted wood notes like chocolate, spicy with anise, allspice, dark, smoky, medicinal with light esters, glue, wax, rubber, cognac barrel impact is obvious, dried fruits with dates, currants, citrus and red fruits, overripe, bump into our nosetrils. On aeration, molasses is vegetal with black tea, floral with rose, thick, berries arise, sweet roasted notes like caramel, burnt sugar, caramel, pastry, complex. 8,3:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with light esters, camphor, glue, slightly metallic, rubber is burnt, the wood is roasted with dark chocolate, roasted nuts, caramel, pastry, slightly resinous, spicy with allspice, anise, smoky, molasses is vegetal, fresh, floral, grassy, herbaceous, hints of mint ajd sugarcane pop up, cognac barrel impact is obvious, fruits are dried like apricots, raisins, yellow and citrus. 8,3:The finish is medium long, dry&tannic, with toasted oak notes, spicy, warm, smoky, medicinal with wax, varnish, rubber, dirty, fruity with dried fruits, cherry, berries and banana, as molasses is dark with black tea, flowery..

A ghost Savanna playing hide and seek with aromas. The nose takes us towards exotic fruits, some medicinal notes (esters, glue) before moving towards scents of cognac, dried fruits, wood, and chili. It's quite volatile rum but has nothing to do with the announced Grand Arôme. The disappointment is even greater on the palate. The cognac cask with its typical flavors (dried fruits, spices, and chili) mixes poorly with the exotic fruits and roasted, caramelized, estery notes and the hint of freshness present. The flavors are diluted on the palate and lose their interest. No Grand Arôme in sight. The alcohol is not too badly integrated. The finish is medium length and more in line with traditional Savanna. We find fruitiness on dried fruits and citrus, a bit of varnish, wood influenced by cognac and spices, a bit of caramelized warmth and smoke, then that's it. A Savanna that leaves a bitter taste, one expects much more for the age statement, the Grand Arôme promise, and the price.

Today a wild blind tasting. 1: very light fruity. Reminds of Obstler. Sharp, alcoholic. Could be an unbalanced Australian or an extraordinary finish. 2: already a whole different league. Dark fruits, smooth and oily on the palate. Warm finish. Could be a long-aged Savanna. 3: lies heavy on the palate, woody dark-fruity, oily pleasant. Finish somewhat woody and relatively short. 4: awesome wild thing! This will have proper power, dirty complex, fruit puree...

😕 Disappointment: Savanna Grand Arôme 2005 - 57.5 % Distilled from molasses after a long fermentation, this 2005 vintage Grand Arôme was aged for 10 years in a tropical climate in cognac casks, then for a further 10 years in Europe in a Maison Ferrand cask. On paper, a 20-year-old Grand Arôme looked like it was going to be very heavy... But in reality, the nose doesn't really evoke a Grand Arôme, the palate is marked by an annoying astringency, and the finish falls away too quickly. In short, a disappointing rum.

Savanna Cross Tasting - November 2025: I'm not convinced by this bottling. Not much fruit and esters for a Grand Arome, too much wood and somehow too watered down on the palate. I had expected more from this.

08-11-2025 - Rate 8.5 Another Savanna. This one really took me by surprise. 2025 have brought some very good bottles from Planteray. Force of habit, but have not tastet that much becides their extreme series the last few years. That might have to change 😉 Nose with wood, spice, glue and dries fruits. Palate with hints of the same ad the nose. Long finish dominated by glue and wood 28-03-2026 - Rate 8.5

Whisky Live Paris 2025 - to be tasted again to confirm score and notes Maybe I need to try this again, but for sure the festival tasting was enough to recognize that either or the "elevage" mr Gabriel pretends to do flatten the rum, or the selection itself was poor. Maybe the weakest Grand arome I tried so far. Not a bad rum, but way too shy in the glass to be a GA

WLP 2025 Advent calendar plantation/planteray by Zdeněk Polách 2025 This rum is beautiful, fragrant, unique with a full and undisturbed taste of fruit, perfectly integrated alcohol, and compared to the original Grand Arome line from Savanna, it's more moderate, probably due to the age; 20 years is quite a unique age for Savanna and not many bottles like this come out.

After trying it in WLP, got another sample to re-evaluate at home Nose : Typical Savanna but more traditional, cognac is very noticeable, some fruits, light glue Taste : Quite sharp, very woody, losing a bit the fruitiness from the nose, spicy, cognac Finish : Short, woody, smokey, spicy Impression confirmed from the WLP, quite disappointing and i'm really missing the markers of grand arome, probably buried below the cognac and the wood

A superb discovery, a very precise rum with the SAVANNA markers. A very fine woodiness, notes of figs, spices, and a slight sweetness despite the 57 degrees.
