Here's the surprise: at 65% cask strength, the alcohol barely bites. Tasters keep saying it's "integrated perfectly." What you get instead is a full ester bomb — overripe banana and pineapple, glue, sour cherry, brown sugar and caramel, with sugarcane and olive-vegetal notes underneath. #5746 27.09.2025 Day one of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. This was another of my hight lights at the WL 2026. A nice ester bomb with a lot of fruit and floral notes. ABV and wood really well integrated with some nice spicy notes.

Satara: Glue, sweet, wet warm wood, fruit wrapped in rock candy cream, good Mhoba, but nothing extraordinary. Slightly earthy finish. Suzuka: Much darker and astringent, dark fruity, very warm and oily on the palate. Reminds me a lot of the Kirsch, which I really appreciate. Letaba. Wow! Moist bomb, also very warm and oily on the palate. More complex than the other two. Awesome stuff!

Oh yes, this Mhoba is exactly to my taste, very tasty. It also has a lot of esters to offer, but is also slightly oaky. Thanks to caramel and brown sugar, we have a light sweetness that nicely rounds off the rum.

Blindverkostung: Das geht ja schon gut los, kaum eingeschenkt, duftet der ganze Raum! Nase: Uhu Klebstoff, lässt mit der Zeit nach, viel Bourbon, Vanille, Trockenfrüchte, Alkohol sticht in der Nase, ein paar Ester, Toffee Bisher würde ich sagen, dass ist ein Foursquare! Gaumen: viel Alkohol (~65%), zu unausgewogen und zu viele Ester für Foursquare, intensiv, holzig, die vielen Ester lassen mich eher nach Jamaika tendieren... Der Nachklang bringt auch keine neuen Erkenntnisse, schmeckt wie eine Mischung aus Hampden und Foursquare, etwa schon wieder Mhoba? Wertung: sehr guter intensiver Rum, nicht übermäßig komplex und Alkohol beißt ein wenig: 8,4 Auflösung: tatsächlich Mhoba!

Tasted in samples several times. This South African rum is characterized by a very high intensity. The esters are largely dominant and carried by the alcohol. Then the woodiness, complemented by brown sugar and light fruitiness.

On aeration, dried, green fruits arise, coconut hints, banana and pineapple, apple is baked, sugarcane is fresh, floral, sweet with honey, pastry, fruitcake, caramelized, join, some anise. 8,8:On the palate, the attack is medicinal with esters, polish, intense, fruity with fermented tropical, yellow, citrus green fruits, sour cherry, dairy notes, sugarcane is vegetal with briny olive, floral, grassy, candied, as the wood is roasted with caramel, sweet, pastry, burnt sugar, biscuits, spicy with allspice, vanilla, smoky. 8,8:The finish is long, dry&tannic, with roasted oak notes, spicy, warm, smoky, resinous, medicinal with esters, chemical, slightly industrial with petrol hints, fruity with citrus, tropical, candied fruits, as the cane is sweet with honey, floral. A rum tasted at Whisky Live Paris in 2025. A vegetal and woody nose, fruity (very ripe pineapple) and estery, with a good deal of spice softened by the bourbon cask. The palate is lively, woody with fruit, vegetal, sweetness and dried herbs. The finish, unlike the Skukuza and Letaba, is well-balanced and tasty. My favorite of the three, and proof that Mhoba has improved a lot in recent times.

Wenn die änfängliche (Klebstoff-) Ester-Wolke verflogen ist, kommt Karamell, Süssholz, Piment, Trockenfrüchte, Butterscotch. Am Gaumen ordentlich Säure, aber auch Karamell und gebrannter Zucker. Gefällt mir besser als gedacht 😉

Time to finally review some Mhoba's releases. This did sit in the glass for a atleast 30 minutes before the review. On the nose: Esters, overripe fruits and little bit of glue as the main note. The bourbon barrel notes are in the background. Over the time, barrel notes become little bit stronger and some vegetal/sugarcane notes appear in the background. Taste: Nicely intense. Overripe fruits. Sour cherries and grapes. Esters. Little bit of vegetal and olives appear in the end. I really like how the notes are blended together. The abv is integrated perfectly. Finish:Warm. Woody notes and spices like nutmeg and little bit of vanilla. Light citrus notes. Medium finish. I am a fan of Mhoba rums and this one did not dissapoint me at all. The abv integration, intensity level and integration of the notes made this one very enjoyable experience. Price to quality is very good. Recommend!

My first experience with MHOBA. Delicious sweet and woody notes on the nose. Overripe fruit. Delicious overripe pineapple and banana on the palate. High ester content, which flows into the sweetness. Olive and a touch of dryness. Wow, I love this. A lovely, long finish and good alcohol integration. I'm already a fan.

Small MHOBA tasting: after the first two, quite a positive surprise. Fruits, esters, and spices here overshadow the wood. Additionally, the vegetal and olive aromas are noticeably more pronounced.

Tasting at WLP 2025. 👃 Sugarcane juice, typical Mhoba esters. Flambéed banana, overripe fruits. The Bourbon barrel brings typical spices (pepper, vanilla) and caramel (overcooked sugar in the pan). Mentholated freshness, vegetal. Empyreumatic character on burnt rubber and its smoke. 😋 Lively, intense, esterified, chili, melted licorice, tamarind candy, sugarcane and salted butter caramel jam, vanilla. Powerful, tasty and fresh expression. Alcohol very well integrated despite the 65%! 💡 The best of the 3 Mhoba presented at the show, by far.

Nase recht Klebstofflastig, trotz langer Zeit an der Luft. Am Gaumen rund und voll. Weniger fruchtig als der Satara und weniger Honig als der Skukuza, aber komplexer als beide. Gleichzeitig weniger Easy Sipper und erfordert mehr Aufmerksamkeit. Auch ein sehr schöner Mhoba.

Nez sur le bois et les esters. Des fruits également. Une note végétale très spéciale. En bouche, on pourrait penser à un Long Pond assez chargé en esters. L'alcool est mordant. C'est fort. Boisé, fruits très mûrs. Belle longueur mais trop fort pour moi.

Mhoba Letaba – 65.1% Aged 42 months in a small ex-American bourbon barrel (Woodford Reserve, 97 L). A real ester bomb, more fruity and floral than the previous ones. The most expressive of the three, with a long, rich and luscious finish. Clearly the best of the trio!
