#5750 28.09.2025 Day two of the Whisky Live 2025, which this year looks better organized/arranged inside. Pretty good agricole with nice wood and spice notes. Sugarcane is well mixed with light coffee notes and fresh fruits ahdn honey.

Montebello is stepping up its game with cask strength rums, including this 8-year-old that is a level above the standard permanent range. The nose offers a beautiful agricultural symphony driven by sugarcane, honey, spices (vanilla, pepper), orange, lemon, and raisins. Everything is quite balanced and more intense than what the rest of the range can offer. The palate presents a clever mix of herbal freshness, warm spices (chili), darker wood leaning towards coffee, apple, orange, and sweeter notes of honey. The whole is a bit drier but fits well with the rum style. It's pretty well made, well constructed, and homogeneous. The alcohol is very well integrated. The finish is medium length. You find the sweetness of caramel, sugarcane, coffee but also spices and wood as well as raisins and orange. While the profile remains linear, it is nonetheless accomplished for an agricole-style rum, which is subject to many constraints that inherently limit aromatic development. A good rum to gently discover cask strengths.

Montebello Brut de Fût 2016 – 47.7% Historic family distillery located on the east coast of Basse-Terre, Montebello produces its agricole rums using a distillation column. This 2016 vintage, bottled in 2024, aged 8 years in American bourbon barrels under the tropical Guadeloupean climate, in the house's traditional containers. The nose opens with caramelized and roasted dried fruits, before giving way to a balanced rum, marked by beautiful woody and spicy notes — although, to my taste, it remains a bit too restrained.
