Fiji Rum & Co Planteray Fiji Islands (Kilchoman Cask) 2009
Peated-whisky fans will feel at home here more than rum purists: a Fiji rum finished in Kilchoman casks, so peat, smoke and campfire run from the nose right through the dry, tannic finish. Underneath there's banana, dried fruit, allspice and burnt oak, but the Fiji ester character stays mostly buried. One taster loves it, the next finds it too smoky by half.

Heavily peated, smoke-driven, whisky-cask Fiji Divisive. The Islay-style peat and smoke dominate, often burying the Fiji rum underneath. Peat lovers rate it high; several felt the whisky cask simply took over.

8,5:On the nose, esters and banana, green fruits, peated whisky notes like peat, smoke, camp fire, mineral, medicinal notes, herbaceous, flowery molasses, roasted wood notes like caramel, chocolate, spicy with allspice, bump into our nosetrils, quite intense. On aeration, it becomes buttery with vanilla, pastry, the wood and rubber are burnt, charred, dried fruits arise, grassy(hay), fresh molasses with tea, nicely balanced. 8,2:On the palate, the attack is strong with peated whisky finish notes like peat, smoky, salty, the wood is charred, sweet, creamy, caramelized, also toasted, spicy with allspice, rubber burnt, bacon is here, the molasses mineral, grassy with hay, flowery, herbaceous, later earthy with tobacco, vegetal, with black tea, dried fruits and banana are delicious. 7,9:The finish is medium long, intense, dry&tannic, with burnt, smoky, toasted oak notes, spicy and peated whisky finish, pairing cognac finish dried fruits, grapes and tropical fruits. Edit:8.5.26.

Soit on aime, soit on déteste.

The whisky finish dominates and overpowers everything. The base spirit is no longer recognizable. Unfortunately, not my thing.

Ex-whiskey cask finishes in rum are always a tricky affair – they usually shape the overall gustatory picture very comprehensively. Here too, the peaty-smoky aroma is omnipresent and accompanies the tasting experience from the nose all the way to the finish. Not unpleasant, but once again only really for fans of peat and smoke, although the overall profile still manages to offer some sweetness and fruity notes.
