A Vietnamese cane-juice white rum is already unusual, and this one leans soft rather than sharp. Expect sugarcane, a little ginger and green grass, with citrus and a light floral edge. Reviews mention maple syrup on the palate, but also a chalky, faintly bitter dryness and a short finish. Several tasters wished it landed at a higher ABV — the heavy reduction rounds it off almost too much.

#5283 28.04.2024 Running a few samples while watching "Moonshiners". Nose Light, citrus, vegetal, light floral, sugarcane, light grass, spice. Palate Light, diluted, citrus, light grass, floral, spice, sugarcane. Finish Short to medium, citrus, faint smoke, sugarcane, light floral. Empty glass Sugarcane, faint chocolate, berries. Would have loved this one at a higher ABV.

The entry-level rum and the very essence of Sampan, which you immediately find with this very fresh, herbal and floral nose, that recognizable sugarcane and those lemony notes. You recognize this Asian thread in the spices that perfume the nostrils, especially the pepper. A natural and original profile in the agricultural landscape. You find a round and creamy rum on the palate, which continues on a floral and herbal tone, but also lime and spices. The palate is a bit more mineral, rather ample but has less character than the other two whites from the brand, due to this dilution which should nevertheless allow beginners to approach Asian profiles more easily. The finish is quite long, dry and spicy, slightly smoky. There is a bit more bitterness on the grass which balances with the citrus and sugarcane. Without being a revolution, it’s a good introductory rum to Vietnam, a terroir that should have beautiful expressions in the future.

⚪ Sampan 43% The most accessible version, designed for the widest audience. The heavy dilution brings a nice roundness... maybe a bit too much. 👃 Nose: pleasant but subtle 👄 Palate: soft, easy, but lacks character 🏁 Finish: short, not very memorable 👉 Good rum, but hard to find a real place for it behind the bar: too sweet for a Ti’Punch, too tame for pure tasting.

The nose is sweet and citrusy. Some flowery notes follow. Almost like an old school lemon and elderflower sweet. And interested palate, maple syrup but also rather dry. Somewhat chalky, almost the taste of crusted up vitamin pills. Bitter citrus toward the end. The finish is short and bitter. Somewhat green. This is an odd one. The nose is better than the rest of the experience. Quite thin and very bitter overall. Wouldn't try again.

Nose of "green" cane, not the species, the maturity! Slight bitterness. Dry, unexpressive palate. Short, dry finish.
