Wagemut Special Edition 2025 2005

Several members call it a proper sipper that eases you into cask strength without knocking you over. Raisins, caramel and dark cherry lead, with roasted wood and a sweet, almost syrupy body that reminds a few tasters of a PX cask. The 54.6% is the sticking point: some find the alcohol nicely tucked in, others say it bites in the nose and turns sharp on the palate.

On the nose, roasted wood notes like caramel, burnt sugar, leather, toffee, metallic patina, thick molasses, flowery, citrus fruits, slightly alcoholic, bump into our nostrils. On aeration, fruits like raisins, dried apricots, prunes, cherry arise, resinous, smoky, spicy wood with vanilla, cocoa and some tobacco. On the palate, the attack is sharp, alcoholic with sweet roasted wood notes like burnt sugar, caramel, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, spicy with vanilla, peppery, later syrupy with slightly bitter molasses, herbaceous and fruity with dried fruits, cherry and citrus fruits. The finish is medium long, more round, balanced, dry & tannic, metallic, sweet with the notes from the palate lingering on. Edit: 15.6.26, an upgrade by 0.1

Venezuela

Avg Rating 7.0/10 over 320 Rums

Venezuela is South America's great rum nation, home to Diplomatico and Santa Teresa, and to one of the strictest aging laws in the world: a minimum of two years, matched only by Cuba. Built from molasses and cane honey, distilled on pot stills and batch kettles, then aged long in solera systems, Venezuelan rum is soft, rich and dessert-like, sometimes openly sweetened, and made in a country whose economy has collapsed around it.
