Foursquare Wagemut PX-Cask Cask Strength (01 Edition 2026)
Raisins, PX sherry and vanilla pour thick and sweet, but at 58.7% there's finally some backbone under all that dessert. Most owners call it a big step up from the 40% PX Cask — same DNA, more oak, more spice, more punch, and the alcohol stays surprisingly well integrated. It's oily and warming and leans dessert hard. Sweet-rum fans grin; anyone chasing a dry Foursquare won't find it here.

Delivers exactly what the name promises: lots of power, lots of barrel, and lots of sweetness. Raisins, dark fruits, chocolate, and spicy wood tones harmonize well with the typical Foursquare base. The PX finish is clearly present but doesn't completely overshadow the rum. Intense, characterful, and surprisingly balanced.

The nose is initially quite promising. But on the palate, there's only exaggerated sweetness and dominant sherry notes that almost completely cover any distillate character, while the alcohol feels surprisingly sharp. With that significant amount of dosage, it's really poorly integrated. The base rum is basically not even assessable as such. In the same price range, rums like Doorly’s 14 offer clearly more balance, depth, and authenticity. A rum that really isn’t one. My wife summed it up perfectly: "Unnecessary alcohol."

I'm testing the Px cask strength from wagemut together with the original to taste the differences. Strength: much stronger on the nose, lots of wood and spiciness, some sherry. Original: sweeter, more lovely on the nose. Strength: at first very strong, then comes wood, sweetness from sherry, almond, and jam very closely following. And some alcoholic punch. Original: gets quite watery compared to that, much more sweet, a bit woody but much less in direct comparison, wow that's quite clear. Finish: strength is much longer than the original. Conclusion: beginner original always a good choice. Advanced definitely the cask strength.

At first the nose is a bit dull, but the rum opens up over time and shows its sherry character. Along with that, the wooden cask and slightly buttery notes. On the tongue, the sweet sherry hits hard, which probably brings quite a bit of sugar naturally. Anyone expecting a cheap Foursquare or hoping for that character will be disappointed. It’s a completely unique category. For me personally, it’s unfortunately not my thing, so I abstain from scoring, that wouldn’t be fair. ========== Clearly marked edit, a few hours later After looking at the other reviews, some of which are well over 9.x up to even 10.0 – what’s going on here? Some legacy Velier releases don’t even reach that. So I adjust my rating clearly to my personal feeling. I am – quite clearly – glad I only ordered one bottle to split. If you like sweet rums, this is for you. It’s just not my taste.

👃 = Explosion of vanilla, banana, prune, walnut and mango with a bit of honey, caramel and pepper on a vinous and woody background. 👄 = After the rich and sweet attack, the strength of this indulgent and pastry-like rum expresses itself up to its warm finish. With the imprint of the PX sherry and the proof, the result is very interesting, a bit divisive.
Review by Johannes
Not a bad rum, but personally way too sweet for me. The alcohol content suits the rum well, but the sherry sweetness is very pronounced and dominant. Anyone who likes sweet rum or wants to get introduced to cask strengths will definitely be well served here.
Review by David Brandes
I find this “rum” extraordinarily good. Dark raisins, plums, caramel and spicy oak. Plus cocoa, roasted nuts and espresso. Full-bodied, powerful and intense, with a long, warm finish and a fine chocolate note.
Review by Timo Groeger
This rum is not mine either, as this is supposed to be a Foursquare. I would never have guessed that in my life. Instead of fruity coconut, we have a lot of sherry here, but also a somehow artificial sweetness thanks to vanilla, butterscotch and caramel.
Review by Maxi
The smell is very similar to the PX Cask, although I find that besides sherry and raisins, grape can also be detected here. Taste-wise, there are clear differences. First, the cask strength of 58.7% is noticeable. Warm mouthfeel without tasting alcoholic. Surprisingly mild and gentle for the alcohol content. The sweetness from the PX comes through much stronger. The mouthfeel is also softer. Very creamy/oily and yet gentle and easy to digest. The alcohol also enhances the flavor. Sherry, raisins, vanilla, caramel, wood, and spice come through more strongly. The finish is sweet and clearly shaped by sherry. A very good rum to get into cask strengths. Highly recommended, as it is mild and easy to digest despite the cask strength.
Review by AlPhilipo
The flagship bottled at cask strength by Nico. Of course, the sweetness wraps around the rum and caresses the wood. If beginners want to take a step towards cask strength, this would be a recommendation. The price is also okay. The nose could be more punchy, it gets a bit lost. But otherwise, a great sipper.
Review by Rumbaer
The adult brother of the PX Cask in drinking strength. Simply more of everything, more aromas, more wood, more sherry and a nice portion of punch. Personally, I like it better than the standard version. Interesting when tasting both together.

Spirituous drink based on rum from Wagemut. The classic PX Cask from Wagemut with 40% without added water, now with a cracking 58.7%. Due to the added Spanish sherry (Pedro Ximenez with 470 grams of sugar per liter), the high alcohol content is hardly felt in its true strength. Why did they only do this now? My friends can now drink the remaining PX bottles. I only drink the "01" now. The aromas come through much stronger here. It's incredible that this is the base of the PX, which I still find excellent. At this strength, it's the best "rum" I've tasted so far. I'm really impressed. The sentence isn't even finished, and I've already poured my second glass. Tonight, a good cigar with it... Conclusion: Maybe two bottles were too few... I probably have to order more.
Review by Martin Mihaly
Well, I waited a long time to open this bottle. It was worth it, it's exactly to my taste. On the nose, it's nicely lightly sweet, woody, sherry, a good piece of chocolate cake. On the palate the same, sweet, woody, a bit peppery, alcohol well integrated. Nice oily consistency, sherry notes and woody. The finish is long and intense, warm and clearly sherry cask.

The Wagemut PX Cask at cask strength. A bit more punch and the higher alcohol content brings out the aromas more. However, it's not quite as suitable as an entry-level drink anymore because, in my view, it's no longer an easy sipper.
Review by Skyfly
A rum that apparently divides opinions. Anyone expecting a classic FSQ here will probably be disappointed – anyone expecting a Wagemut-typical sweetness will likely be rewarded. Compared to other Wagemut bottlings, I surprisingly like this one quite a bit (which doesn’t necessarily mean a "good" rating). Personally, the all-encompassing sweetness just isn’t my thing, but I know some friends who would definitely give this rum 90+ points – though I jokingly call those people liqueur drinkers ;) In summary, I’d say this rum still falls into the liqueur category for me, but it doesn’t give a bad impression there. Still curious to see what Wagemut will deliver in the future – maybe a bold Jamaican cask strength for comparison!? PS: but please, not such a sweet sherry cask again.
Review by René Eckrodt
Strong. Simply super elegant and balanced. This special sherry comes through clearly. But the super good Barbados rum comes through pleasantly. Well-rounded. Yet still complex and smooth for the high alcohol content.
Review by Marcus Thelen
Great experience for fans of the little brother. All impressions are presented here more intensely and even rounder. Super price-performance ratio. I can recommend this rum to anyone without hesitation.

#7012 08.07.2026 What a day today. On the way home from work my car died and had to be towed. That calls for some samples, just to have an excuse. Listening to my Trance Playlist on Spotify. Decent rum with an OK price tag. Sherry dominated rum in my mind with fruits, spice, chocolate, caramel and roasted wood.

Simply a mega stuff! If you compare the PX and the C1 directly, the PX is a slug! The C1 is a very successful drop, I'm really impressed by what it gives in taste. One sip and long joy!
Review by Martin Schultz
Compared to the PX-Cask from Wagemut, the C1 adds quite a bit more for my taste. The PX-Cask is pleasantly soft, sweet, and incredibly approachable, with nice notes of raisins, caramel, and vanilla. The C1 brings significantly more intensity to the glass thanks to about 18% more alcohol. The aromas feel stronger, more complex, and linger longer without becoming too sharp or unbalanced. Especially the vanilla, caramel, and dried fruit notes come out even better in the C1 and are accompanied by a great spiciness. Despite the higher alcohol strength, it remains surprisingly round and is really fun to enjoy. If you like the PX-Cask and want a bit more depth, power, and variety of aromas, you should definitely try the C1. For me, the more exciting and characterful bottling.
Review by Jakob Deiner
The PX Cask is more intense on the nose. The first sip is already strong, with some memories of fruit brandy/raspberry spirit coming up. After the initial "shock," very intense aromas of dried fruits, especially raisins, with minimal oak and a little bit of chocolate. The finish is warm and with a certain sharpness, not unpleasantly alcoholic but rather peppery. Drinks: - Neat: 4.5/5
Review by crazyforgoodbooze
Nice experiment to release the PX Wagemut at cask strength. Clearly more intense and exciting than the normal one and less sweet. Overall a well-rounded thing to bring beginners to cask strength but not for me personally. Also insanely fairly priced at 59€.
Review by esseidennesistso
The high alcohol content brings the aromas, and especially the sweetness, much more forward compared to the "normal" PX Cask. Very tasty and easy to drink. Despite the strength, really drinkable. Great little sip. Also good to introduce your friends and show how awesome cask strength can be. From now on, it must not be missing in my home bar.
Review by David Riek
Cool thing, at cask strength it’s just a completely different beast than the normal PX, I find it incredibly good at cask strength. On the nose, the sherry comes nicely smooth, on the palate first a bit of butterscotch and raisins, and the finish is nice and long and intense.
Review by Felix Reiber
Help, I'm stuck to the glass! The nose of the PX Cask Strength is very fruity and oily at first. I have raisins, sweet sherry, vanilla, dried fruits, oak, milk chocolate, caramel and tropical fruits. On the palate, after a sticky sweetness, an alcoholic sharpness greets me that I did not expect. Honey, sweet raisins, sherry, wood and spices come forward, which then transition to dried fruits, vanilla, caramel candies and plum. The short to medium finish consists of dried fruits, dark chocolate, wood, floral notes and sherry. I have great respect for Nicolas' expertise and his sense for quality. But this is probably not the peak of his skills. Thanks to @Fuwi for the nice sample 😊

Review by Chrisdo76
This rum packs a punch! The cask strength releases aromas after the initial adjustment that are lost in the 40% version. Absolutely worth it.
Review by Hans-Peter Jank
This rum spirit is sweeter than the normal PX Cask. All aromas are simply more intense. The cask strength is personally too much for me. And I don't mean the alcohol content. The sherry in the Foursquare rum's cask steers this Barbados rum in a direction that is not mine. I want to taste this rum at cask strength without sherry addition.
Review by Otto Chriek
A bit sharper than the normal PX, but with that certain extra.
Review by Onkel_Ig
More of everything! Raisins, sherry, caramel alcohol content. I find the 01 to be the better version of Nico's Px Cask. Due to the significantly higher punch, it also comes across less sweet, which suits it well. Great fruity mouthfeel, with a long finish of raisin, sherry, and fruit notes. All in all, a very successful bottling ❤️
Review by Martin Spooner
I find the nose a bit harsh... almost in the direction of mezcal. On the palate, it has nice notes for me. But the rum always has a certain "undertone." Up front, the rum is nicely sweet and fruity. At the back, it has a certain sharpness that reminds me of mezcal. Mixed feelings.
Review by Weil.i.ned.mog
A significantly better alternative to the regular PX. This one feels more mature and is more balanced than the little brother. The flavor notes are perceived more intensely due to the higher alcohol content, softening the sweetness of the sherry. Great stuff 👍
Review by Ivo Höfner
Just tried it again compared to the Origin & once again confirmed that it is the better Wagemut PX. The perfect bridge to enjoy the cask strength and ideal for a cozy campfire with friends.
Review by Baddad
One of my favorite rums. Sweetness, vanilla and the sherry note. Top! Nice dry finish. Lovely overall package. Great value for money!
Review by ThreeH
Now this so emotionally debated rum comes into the glass. Since I never tried the normal 40% version – as very sweet rums are not my passion – I consider this not in comparison but as a standalone bottling. The color is very nice (probably due to the sherry portion). The nose is somewhat dull, dried plums, raisins, not bad but totally on the PX side. The palate impression, despite cask strength, is very sweet. Also raisins, plum, and behind that not optimally integrated alcohol. The rather short finish on the sweet PX aromas. This bottling will find its fans – as shown by some quite high ratings. But those who move in the unsweetened single cask realms probably can't do anything with the sweetness. I'm quite glad to have a bottle – for friends and family, but I will hardly pour any for myself. The rating is therefore for the f+f group.
Review by Rüdiger Schneider
Was amazed at how well the alcohol is integrated, balanced, easy to drink, and exactly hit my flavor notes
Review by StefanR
The Wagemut 01 is the well-known PX-Cask with the amplifier turned up big time: raisins, dates, toffee, and dark fruits meet vanilla, chocolate, and spicy oak. Oily, sweet, and powerful, but the 58.7% finally give the lush PX fruit the necessary bite. I find the interplay between sticky sherry sweetness and strong wood especially exciting. Definitely not a wallflower – but that's exactly why it's a lot of fun. Compared to the regular Wagemut PX-Cask with 40.3%, I find the idea of this bottling much more appealing. The 58.7% probably deliver exactly what the regular PX-Cask sometimes lacks: more backbone against the massive sweetness. Instead of just raisin and sherry, you get more oak, spice, and alcoholic punch. To me, this sounds like the more mature – albeit significantly more brutal – version of the Wagemut classic.
Review by Lena Anderson (Game-Asela)
An intense rum. Not for beginners and rather for experienced connoisseurs. Still, it offers a good entry to dive deeper into the rum world. The individual components fit well together and give a coherent picture.
Review by JerryDerGlatzkopf
Very full-bodied. The cask strength brings an insane amount of aroma. It hardly burns and is very soft and round. You have to be careful not to drink too much because it's very easy to drink. If you like the regular PX cask and want more power and volume, this is exactly right for you.
Review by SaschaA
Very nice on the finish and strong in taste
Review by VladMai
Very tasty and an absolute recommendation.
Review by Fabian Haha
Intense, oily and powerful, with lots of PX sherry, raisins, dark fruits and a nice spice. The cask strength brings clearly more depth and character than the classic PX cask, without the alcohol overwhelming everything. Long finish, warm, sweet-spicy and with dark chocolate and oak.
Review by zockerbodo
Very tasty and surprisingly mild

I actually didn't want to buy it because I already have the regular PX. But at cask strength it's a whole different level. Yes, it's sweet, but the aromas it brings are just amazing.
Review by D.B.
In my opinion better than the PX, more punch, the aroma profile comes through much better but with the high alcohol content definitely not for everyone!

Read full review ›I like the Cask Strength much better than the PX Cask. The aromas are ultimately the same, which is quite logical, but for me the Cask Strength is much better balanced and more distinguishable. The higher alcohol content suits the spirit well and gives the base rum the chance to show itself better. The sherry remains very present but no longer dominates the taste so strongly.
