Velier Hampden Single Cask (Kirsch Whisky) HLCF 2023
Sip this neat and give it a long rest — at least 30 minutes — or the sherry sits heavy. Underneath you get classic Hampden funk: ester, glue, overripe banana and pineapple, then a strong red wine/sherry cask wrapping it in leather, roasted wood and a sulphur edge. At 64.4% and just two years old, it's young and a bit rough around the edges.
- Recognizable Hampden funk
- Complex when rested
- Long warm finish

Young, sherry-heavy Hampden with a sulphur edge People split on the cask: some find the sherry and Hampden funk a fun, complex pairing, others call it unharmonious with too much sulphur in the finish. Young and divisive.

Oh man ich bin es echt langsam leid, solche sherry finish Sachen zu probieren. O.k. er ist nicht ganz so schlecht, wie der andere, der mehr als schrecklich war. O.k. den kann man trinken, aber nicht mein Ding.

#6092 20.12.2025 Enjoying cracking open this bottle while watching Gold Rush on the telly. Nose Light wood, sulphor, fruits, faint smoke, faint rubber, light glue, sherry, faint caramel. Palate Medium intense, light wood, sherry, fruits, light sulphor, light rubber, faint salt, light orange, light herbs, faint mint. Finish Very long and warm, light wood, dry, sherry, light sulphor, faint citrus, light dried fruit. Empty glass Sour, light sulphor, light herbs, fruits. This one is very strong on the sherry notes, so if you do not like that kind og finish, then this is not for you. Needs to rest for a very long time for the sherry to settle. I nipped at the beginning and then waited 45 minutes before the second sip.

The sherry cask maturation seems to suit it well. It is more complex than the bourbon cask-matured RX 11980. The sherry cask is by no means too dominant. It's young and has its rough edges, but that's okay. I imagine that it is slightly sulphurous on the finish. With water, however, this note goes away and nuts, dried fruit and chocolate notes appear.
