Buy this expecting classic Caroni tar and you'll do a double-take: the Paxarette sherry treatment all but buries it. What's left is a heavy, almost oily sweetness — dried fruit, raisin, oak, vanilla and caramel, with only a faint mineral streak and hints of coffee and chocolate hinting at where it came from. Epic Velier Caroni Tasting 2023: Very sweet, lots of sherry and paxarette influence. Heavy, almost oily sweetness of dried fruit, oak, vanilla and caramel, plus light minerality, slightly spicy-tart notes of allspice, coffee, chocolate and some minerality - the Caroni DNA is almost non-existent. As this is an LTR Caroni, none of this comes as a surprise. A very good rum, but it has little to do with Caroni in the classic or HTR sense.

Yesterday we had a great evening in my friends man-cave. Lots of laughter and wonderful rums. A bit different from the heavy one indeed and a though a drop of water released more flavours I'd say be careful not to add too much water!

... Caroni is a distillery from Trinidad, producing rum at the height of its fame, which was added in a ratio of 1:10 to naval blends. It was too strong and strange to be pleasant on the tongue. In 2000 the distillery ended production and was closed. Only in 2010 did tasters appear who liked the rum precisely for its special taste. And interest grew. Caroni belongs to the category of rums "you need to try before you die." I recommend it, Caroni is really a unique rum.
